well ive been thru horrendous childbirth, pancreatitis,& 3 hip replacements. nothing left me bending over & wretching like their portapotties. even tho it's an hours drive, took my 2 friends to see this place which i have grown to love and they were sick of hearing me talk about it. Shakespeare once penned "to thine own self be true." i would pen this as "keep thine own manure to thyself." have been going here for years BECAUSE ITS UNUSUAL.BECAUSE ITS HIGH END. yet nature called this time. when i asked about a restroom they pointed me to the back where the porta potties are. the first one i opened was simply a predessor of what was to come. the other two left me w an impossible choice. i was trying not to dry heave entering the chosen one which was a slim comparison of the lesser of the other 2 evils. by the time i got to the front entrance where the car was parked i was bent over the car holding onto dear life with persistant vomiting onto the gravel. i felt so pretty. my friends would not go to lunch as planned as their description of my dryheaving in the car & my green face did not lend itself to eating. to not describe these portolets is not spareing you dear reader, but myself from the visuals that would prompt unyielding dryheaving every. single. time. that i think about this.my problem with this: i have a pretty strong stomach. my dad in the medical field would come home for dinner & while we were eating could easily talk about such subjects as pus. im no stranger when it comes to intestinal fortitude. these portolets were otherwordly disgusting, which to me were a complete insult to their customers who are spending small fortunes. i have never left there spending less than $300.00. and I'm on a pretty tight budget but I plan & save to come here. and most of their customers did not fall off the turnip truck or are backwoods farmers looking for something "purdy." show some respect to your customers. you want me to spend $250. 00 on some little garden ornament then clean up your act. make sure you use a real bathroom before coming here. Meander the grounds of hedge rows, landscape design, and water fountains. Visit with the goats and the chickens and sit on the picnic tables. Trees, bushes, perennials, shade, loving plants. Multiple greenhouses full of colorful annuals. I didn't find that they offered many obscure or rare options. But they were stocked with the typical annuals and perennials to get your gardening season going. Succulent lover's dream has its own dedicated greenhouse. Antique pots, architectural ornaments, water fountains, orbs, cement animals, garden ornaments. interior retail space offers an eclectic array to either treat yourself or for special occasion gift giving. Beautiful layout, helpful staff, large assortment, and tastefully decorated, Shakespeare's garden is a nice spot to stop at on a day trip in the Western part of CT. I found a couple of items I was searching for, and I had to resist not buying too much!!! It's pricier than large big Corp. but so darn beautiful and great garden essentials and a lot of extras. The layout of this garden center makes it worthy of a visit in itself. A wide variety of garden-related items are available-- many unique to area. Houseplants, plant containers, home decor, local taste treats, garden ornaments, annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees can all be found. Winter abounds with attractive, festive displays as well. Service is friendly, and unobtrusive. Only negative experience I have had is with tree prices. (Returned to purchase tree for fall planting to find price tag changed from $599 to $1,700, just six weeks later. Had photo for personal reference, but owner would not modify at all, so did not purchase. Offered to locate same tree, for original tagged price elsewhere, but never followed through.) Subsequently I am purchasing trees from Cosmo's in New Milford, as I can plan without concern about price changes. read more

First time here, first impression: Nicely organIzed assortment of shrubs and quality garden plants, albeit pretty expensive for what you get. Picked up some perennials along with several tomato plants. In fairness went there in a pouring rainy afternoon, so the entire experience would be improved next time...and there will be a second visit before I write this place off or make it a go-to garden center. read more

Beautiful selection of plants mixed in with a few animals here a d there make for a wonderful place. The only reason I dropped a star is help there can be a bit hard to come by and when you do get it you kinda feel like you're interrupting their day and shouldn't be bothering them. That aside it's a beautiful place and has lots of options for the home garden. read more

Beautiful place but a bit pricey. The baskets are exquisite and done perfectly. I often leave there totally disappointed so many of the baskets on display are always labeled sold. Its not just a couple its numerous that are not available. The remaining baskets for sale are of no comparison. The staff is not overly friendly or helpful not even a greeting. read more

So I had a not so good experience a month ago after there to buy 6 very large hanging baskets. Yes I know we are in the whole COVID pandemic but not once did they ask if I needed help and when I asked for some guidance it was like I was bothering them. They did not ask if they could help me to my vehicle nor did they offer plastic to put down I had to ask for it again like I was bothering them. I decided maybe it was just a bad day for them and decided to give it another try.....well that was no better. I'm sorry I won't be going back again. There are many other small garden centers in the area who are more than willing to go that extra mile for their customers. I'm so disappointed in them as they do have some beautiful things but customer service speaks in volume. read more

The garden is absolutely gorgeous beautifully decorated beautifully landscaped the plants look healthy and fantastic. The staff is unhelpful rude and obnoxious. They do not know the price of their own items they have missed priced items they miss Mark items they don't even know what the items are called. I was in there today and got three different prices for the same plant.I was actually told if I want to know the name of the plant I could look it up online but how do I look it up if I don't know the name. Extremely unhelpful extremely. But still absolutely beautiful gardens and looks like healthy magnificent plants. read more

This place is usually included in the list of best Ct. garden centers and after seeing IG postings of it I made the trip. Let's just say the photographs of it were pretty selective and the reality was pretty underwhelming. Perhaps good for picking out annuals if this is your neighborhood spot but I wouldn't make a special trip. Prices are high and the selection for other plants is pretty expected and somewhat limited. read more

I can't believe there are only 2 reviews for this garden center! We've passed the sign many times but never ventured down through the twists and turns off the beaten path to visit. The parking lot is on the small side, so I wasn't expecting too much. We had a great time exploring through the store which is delightfully cluttered from floor to ceiling with unique items...vintage signs, wooden sculptures, funky bird houses, etc. I was most impressed by the collection of items for building terrariums and fairy gardens which includes tiny mushrooms, metal bicycles, bird cages, sculptures & much more. I'm sure I can easily convince our son into building a dinosaur terrarium. The outdoor area and greenhouses have many lush plants to choose from. The staff is friendly and informative. Some of the hanging baskets were simply amazing with their bursts of contrasting colors and textures. It must have been at least 90 degrees on the day we visited, so our son enjoyed the sprinklers the most! We also stopped by to visit the chickens way out back and spotted a fuzzy bunny sharing the coop. Looking forward to many more visits, especially during the Christmas season! read more

This is one of my favorite places to find beautiful, one-of-a-kind holiday gifts. Yes, it's a greenhouse and they sell beautiful mantle greens, wreaths and trees, but the gift shop is an oasis, in and of itself. The gfit shop is in an older building. There are ornaments galore - the trees seem to have a theme - I was partial to the one that had old-fashioned skier ornaments on it. It's very elegant and tasteful, yet down to earth with lots of little gems. It's a bit off the beaten track but well worth the trip! read more

I can't rate this small business highly enough! This nursery is a gem nestled on the old Burr farm in the picturesque rolling hills of Brookfield. Outside the entry has beautiful flowers, plants, shrubs and lawn ornaments. Inside is a quaint shop with calming music, beautiful decorations for house and garden and lawn supplies. There are also some candles & other gift items. Greenhouses are out back. There is even free coffee! The owners are quite friendly and allow customers to walk on the grounds behind the business. Way in the back there are chickens that the kids like to visit. All the people who work here are so nice and helpful. The staff is quite knowledgeable about which outdoor plants thrive in shade or sun and how to take care of them. During the holidays, they sell beautiful holiday wreaths, kissing balls, Christmas trees and other decorative evergreens. In the shop there are several Christmas trees set up with all sorts of interesting artisan ornaments for sale. This place is a true treasure, an absolute piece of paradise. read more

Had a wonderful time there this summer selecting annuals, containers, etc. for my deck (the first outdoor space I've had to really do as I wished with.) One of my favorite places in the western hemisphere at least. Set on an historic old farm, it is a hidden gem in a beautiful residential area. They carry a large variety of hardy and reasonably priced plants that change with the season, and never fail to perform in my garden. But the best part is the barn/gift shop. I could live in that barn; every nook and cranny has something wonderful, from the merchandise to the architecture of the place itself. You must visit every season to see the changing face of the place, and watch how the inventive and endlessly creative plantings come to life in every corner, from an overflowing bicycle basket, to drainpipes and concrete blocks bursting with ferns and succulents of every description. But the most spectacular season is Christmas, with a forest of trees decorated to make you go 'WHOA!!!". There are no words to describe the dazzle.......you must see it for yourself. On the other hand....don't go. And don't tell your friends or take them there. I'd rather keep it MY secret garden. read more
