By far the best nursery around here. I love wandering around Oliver's extensive grounds and enjoying the plants and landscaping. They have a great selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, decorative pots and more. There are many unique plants that I've never seen elsewhere. Most recently, I was searching for succulents, and they had a vast array, with lots of beautiful arrangements to provide inspiration. While Oliver's is a geared toward high-end gardeners, I find their prices to be about the same -- sometimes better -- than those of other garden centers in Connecticut. The knowledgeable staff are friendly and helpful. Oliver's is also community-minded. In my neighborhood, we are working to transform a vacant, overgrown, ugly lot into a nature preserve and bird sanctuary. Oliver's has been a true partner in this endeavor, providing native tress and shrubs that are well-adapted to the particulars of the space and lots of good advice about care, placement, etc. read more

An extraordinary nursery, and one that appears to be highly curated. The conifers and dwarf hardwoods are spectacular, and their selection of alpines is broad across the seasons. It's a 100-mi round-trip for us and it is always worth it. There is only one Oliver's in the known universe. read more

While the selection is good and prices a bit high, the female gardeners seem to know their stuff. When I cornered the owner to do a large landscaping project and I mean a large project, to my face I got oh yes oh yes. I followed up for months and months and was ignored by Jed. Totally ignored. I went in numerous times and he avoided even responding to garden assistant. Rude behavior in a business that must rely on clients. I understand a company being busy but common courtesy should be a given. How about saying we are too busy not just ignore someone hoping they will ignore your arrogance and just wait til you are free. This poor client management style seems to trickle down to staff- except a few female gardeners. There are other garden centers who are friendly and willing to be kind and helpful. I always enjoy the whole experience of being here. Usually it's to sleuth out the exotic or obscure plant, tree or shrub. I always learn something new! I make it a point to meander the grounds as the setting although it's a nursery is at once tranquil and fragrant and just gorgeous. I called Oliver Nurseries several times and was told that they would have the tree I wanted in a few weeks and gave me a price with planting. I called in a few weeks and was told that they did not have the tree I wanted and a smaller tree would cost more money. I understand that at these times it is hard to complete tasks but I do not like being given a time and price that a tree would be available and then when I call act like I don't know what I am talking about! read more

It's as if you are walking into their own home and they are proud of their decor and want to show you all that piques your interest. Oliver's is the nursery for those who can truly appreciate nursery stock regardless of whether it's conifers, deciduous trees, perennials, or annuals. The selection in any of the varieties is exceptional, and in excellent condition. The display gardens give you ideas for what is possible in your own landscape be it small or large. Others have commented on planting fees - 50% of the plant cost is the norm for any nursery. This is not for the individual looking for a petunia or a geranium to stick in a pot. Go to Lowes where the pricing will be more satisfactory. However the staff is certainly willing to educate you regarding the +/- of the various species. Sale today and about 8 extra girls there to help but all standing near front talking among themselves and only way to get attention is interrupt them. Not looking to see who needs help, Still don't get it. Also you don't get the sale price when you need installation and willing to pay 50% more. They Want cash and carry to move plants.??? But you're not moving plants when I left. I'm willing to pay for labor due to arthritis but shouldn't be penalized with no sale price. Why not get extra business for those that need the help while still appreciating them by giving a sale price. I will go elsewhere. read more

We recently had Oliver's put in a new sod lawn after Sandy, and remove dead shrubs, cut beds, mulch, etc.... Matt was extremely helpful, clear, honest, friendly, and gave us a good price. They came when they said they would and worked fast! My neighbors all said they were jealous and my mowing person said he has never seen such perfect and healthy sod with no dead areas. Just because the nursery is located in an affluent area, Fairfield County, it does not justify their prices for trees/shrubs/plants and/or planting services. Check out other nurseries before patronizing Oliver's. Elitist attitudes and price gouging should not be supported. Consumers certainly desire beautiful landscaping but blind allegiance, based on supply and variety should not be a driving factor in purchase or patronage. Value, live plant viability, equitable, competitive pricing and a less arrogant attitude should certainly be factored in and considered. read more
