The food is fairly standard pub grub, and is an unfortunate change from how it used to be when the food had a slightly more unique edge to it. It's always cooked satisfactorally but never seems to quite get past being ok. The pub quiz used to be the highlight of the week, but mainly because the quizmaster was always drunk so with him having left, there is now less to make the pub as distinguished entity in town.

What better way to while away an hour or 2 than to sit drinking a pint or 2 of beer watching steam trains and vintage diesels pass by. However, beware!!! If its a themed day, such as Thomas the Tank, then the place will be full of young children running around and families using the tables which are intended for the pub even though they aren't buying anything. On this occasion I had a Green Bullet IPA, which was well priced at £2.95, though it tasted a little bit flat.

It doesn't look like it used to be a fire station (like the Lead Station in Chorlton) or a police station. I can't find any information about it online. The pub itself can only really be described as an old man's pub. However, it is located in a quaint little building on Wilmslow Road, and being a Marston's pub, it does good beer. Like nearby pub Fletcher Moss it is one of those pubs that I would have detested a few years ago, but that is becoming ever more appealing with the more cups of tea I drink and episodes of Countdown I watch. It is somewhere you are guaranteed of a pint with the background noise of old men's chatter rather than Beyonce's Bootalicious (I'm looking at the Pitcher and Piano). Be warned if you're planning on visiting the Station as part of the Didsbury Dozen. Although I've not heard of any stories of inebriated pubcrawlers being turned away from this establishment (unlike Fletcher Moss), I wouldn't recommend bringing an entourage of 20 rugby players with 11 pints each inside them into this place. If you know anything about the history behind the name, then I'd be genuinely interested to find out!

Didsbury is fast losing the little village feel that makes it so nice, with chain bars and restaurants staging a swift takeover. Now Pitcher & Piano, O'Neill's and Zizzi line its streets. There's another breed of independent bar in Didsbury too, the alternative pseudo-hippie middle-class studenty bar such as Saints & Scholars and The Art of Tea, both of which I happen to like. The point though, is that the old style pub is a dwindling species. Even the old favourite The Didsbury, has gone a bit posh and gastro. The Station is one of the few remaining little pubs with a unique old character, top quality ales and a friendly personal atmosphere for a reasonable price. They even have some beautiful and (relatively) locally brewed ales. Its not even an old man pub, as its perfectly welcoming and nobody would be out of place there. Great place. P.S. Regards the previous review, its better not to take 20 rugby boys anywhere, and don't ever do the 'Didsbury Dozen'.

Not been in this place for many years, but after seeing it mentioned on a TV programme recently we…read moredecided to give it a try, the main reason being that on the TV they said they were bringing back the love of traditional English dishes such as Tripe!! Now as a kid I was force fed Trip and hated it, and never dared try it since, so was up for the challenge. The three of us arrived at around 1pm the bar was quiet but not empty which was great, we were greeted by a friendly barman, who showed us to a table over looking the river. We ordered drinks and read the menu. I had the Italian Red wine (£4.80 glass) which was fantastic and my friend had a bitter (£2) from a massive choice as they had just had a weekend beer festival. We decide to try the Tripe in Madera sauce, and Ducks liver in Madera (served with an egg on top) to share between the three of us, it was outstanding I would order both again we all really enjoyed the starter. Starters were £5-£6 each. For mains we ordered Fish and Chips x 2 and 1 Toad in the hole, I wanted the wood pigeon but due to a tooth problem decided I better save that for next time, these meals were also outstanding, we all gave it 10/10, the chunky chips, battered fish, mushy peas and tartar sauce were perfect, the Toad in the hole with 2 sausages was also excellent (mains were £8-£9 each) but this came with nothing else so had to order a side portion of chips at £3, we would have loved dessert but simply had no room. The service, staff were all very friendly and efficient (the meals came to a total of £53.50 not inc service) The down side as others have said is the entrance, toilets and outside areas, the bar is very dark, and could be said it is dismal, the cleanliness of the areas is poor but clearly the dated entrance, carpet, rails, windows, lets the whole place down, the location on the side of the river is great and with some imagination with flower boxes, and some refurbishment it would make such a difference, they must lose a lot of customers due to the entrance, we did think twice before entering. All in all I would defiantly return, I felt the service, food and drinks were all so good it was worth risking the stairs, but not sure I would take anyone for a special meal due to the entrance. The great thing about Mark Addy is that things stay disctinctly up-hill once you arrive. Named after the famous oarsman and publican who was awarded the Albert Medal for the rescue of over 50 people from the then highly-polluted River Irwell in the 19th century this is obviously a bar/restaurant well rooted in British tradition. Both the food and drink are exactly that- traditional, British, nonesense free, good stuff. The bar is also rather famous for its huge selection of cheeses and pate- perfect pint partners as far as I'm concerned. Dodge the lunch time rush and turn up late afternoon to make sure you get a riverside seat and you will find it one hard place to leave.

The large car park makes parking a small problem, and there is plenty of seating within. Always clean, service is quick, and the drink and food is good. Probably the best pub in the larger local area.

It is rarely quiet in terms of people because it is a very popular pub. Football days especially indicate how popuular this pub is, with football teams using it as there own base before and after games in the sunday pub league, and supporters of the local professional side (stoke city) using it as a base for travel to the matches. Food is served on various occasions for free when sports groups are in and everyone is welcome to help themselves as long as the team has had first dibs , as pub meals are not served.
