Like most decent pubs in Stockport - 'The Railway' is definitely worth going 5 mins out of the main drag to and the clientele is made up of regulars who seemed pretty chilled at having us newbies in and taking advantage of the super low prices for some fantastic beers. Of the beers they've a fantastic selection of German lagers, Bury based Outstanding beers and I was so impressed to see that Thornbridge's Jaipur was on offer for £3.20 - wow, that's £2 a pint cheaper than Chorlton!! Ok so this place isn't going to win any interior design competitions anytime soon but that isn't the point - this is a fantastic pub and a great place to hang out in.

Its the perfect place to pop in for a pint if you other half is deep in shopping mode in the Peel Centre across the road. The landlady Sue has a no swearing rule which I find make me feel very welcome and this in one of the few pubs I feel happy having a drink myself.

As a student in Manchester, however, you cannot fail to have heard about the Didsbury Dozen - a pub crawl targeting 12 of Didsbury's watering holes. I personally never did the dozen, but I knew several people who did. There are several pubs that welcome the pub crawlers with open arms, several that would probably rather they weren't there but couldn't afford to kick them out, and a couple who are totally against the concept and will not allow pub crawlers onto their premises. Fletcher Moss is an example of the latter, and I had heard stories about the nasty spoil-sport of a manager at this pub. However, five years on, and I am much older and wiser. I appreciate good beer and music that will not drown out your conversation. On setting foot in the Fletcher Moss I was not at all surprised that the management had refused to serve pub crawlers. It is a quiet CAMRA pub with no loud music and no football. Some would class this as a boring pub, but the older I'm getting the more I find myself enjoying visits to places like this.

Put it this way, on a Saturday night - the main pub actually seems to become a dance floor playing all the classics of soul while middle/later age peeps put on their glad rags and dance around living the dream like John Travolta in Saturday night fever. And why not... What's weird is that everyone is still just sat around drinking their pints of Hydes casually while the queue for the bar merges with the 'dance floor' - put it this way, one bump out of the queue and you could find yourself doing the waltz with a mid 50's blonde in a matter of moments. Beer is fairly average Hydes stuff (Summer Ale was best of a bad bunch) - but for entertainment value and a sense of WTF - this was a cool night out.

It is a Joseph Holts pub, so you can expect to find reasonably priced mild and bitter... further to that, they have made the recent addition of an "ok" wine list. Also a recent addition is the serving of food! I am not too sure how this transition is fairing as i did not eat on my last visit. I noted that the pub seemed strangely quite for a Friday night, and when I asked my friend why? he said the recent changes had seen the regulars move out in protest!? I am sure that that Holts are trying to cash in on the reputation of other gastro pubs in the area by supplying a cheaper alternative.
