Best Fish N' Chips in Manchester
    Euge R.

Wow. I really thought I knew what a good Fish and Chip plate was supposed to look and taste like and The Mark Addy turned my Fish N' Chip world upside down! Besides the establishment being nicely located aka waterfront on the Salford and Manchester border, the ambiance is very soft and appeasing to your senses as you walk your way down the stairs. The service is great and I'm really a fan of the old times Candle Sticks softly illuminating the surrounding bricks providing a very kicked back experience. If I was trying to make an impression on a first or third date this is indeed the place I would go. Before I get into the food I'll say the pricing was surprisingly reasonable as the quality was a lot higher than the cost would dictate, which I rarely say if ever. Now to the most important part, the Fish N' Chips. Beginning with the presentation the Addy's Fish N' Chip plate had nothing but hand made goodness. The mushy peas and the chips are by far a distant first in the best I've tasted all over the UK! It was no wonder why my colleague thought this place provided the best Fish N' Chips in all of Manchester. Before I can even get to the Fish I couldn't stop snacking in the Chips. Just try imagining the best mash potatoes you've ever had and than being wrapped in a nice flavor exterior crunch where you can even tell that it's been fried or at least that's how it tasted. Ok now for the Fish. The Cod was nice and the beer batter they used wasn't too sweet and not to bland as it was meant to be paired as part of a triangle of goodness as even the Tartar sauce was the best I've ever had. If you're wondering if I'm being bias check the rest of my Fish N' Chip reviews. I will not crown this dish the best I've ever had but it's up there. I can't say enough about the overall experience at the Mark Addy and quality of the Fish N' Chips. This is definitely a can't miss restaurant when in Manchester.

We dined on the second floor for lunch on a Sat. We did not have reservations-but they are recommended. My friend dined on a lively chicken bacon avo salad. I had the chicken bacon cheese sandwich. The food itself was delicious. I had a carrot soup. It was fresh and not overly salty. The sourdough bread and butter was the perfect complement and I enjoyed my meal immensely. My husband had a salmon bowl which looked incredible, but I didn't sample. One of the things we really liked about The Old Wellington was the high caliber of food quality. Being that we had just embarked on our UK trip, it was nice to have a meal that was healthy. I was really blown away by how great the food was and extra happy that I didn't have to settle for something overly rich that would've weighed me down for the days of walking ahead. While the atmosphere and the food were 5 stars all the way, I am deducting one star for the length of time it took to get the food. We scanned the QR code on our table to place our order (a relic from Covid times I suppose), and it took nearly 40 minutes for our food to arrive. We noticed other people going in and placing their orders, but this was confusing since our drink order arrived in a somewhat timely manner. We had timed tickets for an attraction nearby, so I had to leave part of my meal behind. Kind of a bummer since the food was so good and an hour should've been plenty of time to not feel rushed. Of worthy mention is the conveniently central location in Manchester. Literally less than 5 minutes walk to great shopping, Chetham's Library and Manchester Cathedral. We loved our time in Manchester, and someday we'll be back to try more from the Old Wellington. Next time, we'll place our order inside :-)

Most people would see this pub when heading into town from Rochdale Road direction, as the side of the pub is often rented out to make advertising morals for various companies, which are pretty cool. It isn't the trendiest of pubs in town, with the client base seeming to be much older than other bars nearby in the Northern Quarter, and it did seem to be a little dead/quiet compared to others nearby, but there still seems to be a charm about this place. Competitive pricing, decent/average service and selection of beers. A good amount of seating too, some of it is reasonably comfortable. 3*

In fact there's been a real Hare and Hounds here in Shudehill all this time and I'd never realised it. Probably because I didn't have much reason to go to Shudehill back then, but there we have it. Well shame on me, because this is one of the oldest pubs in Manchester. It's in the Northern Quarter, but think of it as something of an alternative to it, because while the majority of the NQ is dedicated to quirks and boho vibes and artsiness with just the right amount of scruff and a few airs and graces, pretension ends here. This is about as down to earth as you can get. You'll find old men by the door (the front door of which is adjacent to both pawn and porn shops and apparently what is one of Manchester's most famous and discreet brothels... mmm, local culture) smoking pipes and cigarettes, and if you can muster up the bravery to walk past them, it's worth it. This place is soaked in character in the same way the likes of the King's Arms in Salford is, with a legendary Karaoke night full of geriatrics crooning along to Frank Sinatra and cheap drinks aplenty. The food is as down to earth as the place - decent, honest and simple. With friendly staff and live music upstairs sometimes, this pub is about as central as you can get and definitely worthy of a few visits. Practise your gruff voice and start whinging about 'the youth of today' and you'll fit right in, squire.

One drizzly Sunday afternoon, I accompanied Vickie S to watch a couple of football matches in the New Oxford, shortly to be joined by one of our friends. Having been told there was no food at the King's Arms, I assured my mates that the New Oxford doesn't serve grub on Sundays at all. It says so on the website, in reviews, everything. As we arrived a sign greeted us informing us of which days food was served. Monday to Saturday. Cue much lip trembling from the very hungry football fanatics. Even when inside they still tried their luck and asked the bartender if there was any food at all. When met with a negative, as well as a round of drinks we bought a round of crisps. Every Seabrooks flavour you could think of. And then later, while our friend was enjoying a cigarette outside, the very sweet bartender who'd been lovely to us throughout the ridiculous crisp mountain exchange dropped a packet of mini Cheddars and a packet of pork scratchings on our table. 'Here you go, on me,' he said with a smile. We looked at each other. She, aware of my Yelping duties, turned to me and said, 'I think you're gonna have to add another star.' 'I think so too,' I responded. The pair of us gushed about just how nice that was. Free snacks and very kind service is something so rare in cities, and in that little corner of Salford, on the very outskirts of Manchester city centre, we were privileged to receive such wonderful things. New Oxford, well done. I'll be in to try the food very soon, which I'm sure will be fantastic. I also tried a new fruit beer. Passionfruit, on tap. To quote Romeo Montague, 'Did my heart love til now?' Heaven in a glass, I assure you. Utter heaven. Is it bad that I'm craving this beverage on a Wednesday morning?

Highly recommended for a classic English meal. I note other reviewers have disparaged the English food - don't come here if you think you're not going to like it, I would venture to suggest! The drinks on offer are all a little bit stuck in the past for my beer tastes but this isn't a problem for most patrons - they just do lots of bitters, lagers and stouts. I have to say that their beer flights are great value at just over £3.00 where you can get a third of each beer of your choice up to a pint - really good idea and great to see it appearing in more and more pubs! City Arms is somewhere that's cool to pop into if you're after a quick pint or meeting with friends, I just can't see myself wanting to spend all night here - I think I'd get very bored, very quickly of the beers on offer - but this is my own overly pretentious beery opinion!

The room at the end of the corridor houses a few tables, stools, benches, a piano and a door to the gents. One thing that does make a lot of sense is it's honesty.
