Great food at a great homely pub. Well worth a visit. The cheese and onion pie is excellent.

I couldn't get enough of this place. The epitome of an (extremely) old pub at the heart of a…read morecommunity where everyone seemed to know everyone else. And the beers are darn good too. This whitewashed inn accessed over an old packhorse bridge claims to 'probably' be Yorkshire's oldest (1307). Got to love them covering themselves for inaccuracy there. That's over seven centuries of beery goodness which was open for trade 40 years before the Black Death! A gem of a building with wooden beams throughout - the layout inside is stepped as it's built on a decline so disabled access is obviously limited (you may wish to phone in advance if you or your family member has any mobility concerns). There's plenty of seating throughout, however, with some set back in nooks in the walls. As well as serving real ale from independent brewers, they stock genuine imported lagers from around the world. Their fridge of bottled beers looked quite comprehensive. They also have guest beers which change regularly - when I visited they had Jaipur from Thornbridge on (one of my all time favourites). They serve food but we didn't eat here on this occasion. I can guarantee I will be a punter here again when I'm over next time.

Having been regulars under the previous management, we are very disappointed that the new LandLady…read moreis afraid of dogs and it is no longer a dog friendly pub. We have 2 Alsation dogs, who the LandLady admitted were well behaved, but she asked us not to bring them with us again. This venue must not be advertised as being "Dog Friendly" anymore. The LandLady claimed our dogs were scaring children. We were sitting outside in the beer garden and one of the two children in the beer garden came over to stroke our dogs. The little boy was only a toddler and he loved them! Our dogs enjoyed him petting them, the only other child in the beer garden was a young girl approx 13 years old, she didn't have any interaction either good or otherwise with our dogs. When asked about which child was scared of them, she said it was herself! We had eaten meals and had 2 rounds of drinks prior to being asked not to bring the dogs ever again. They had done nothing wrong, to warrant being barred other than being big dogs. My partner and I were deeply offended and will never return with or without the dogs.

The bar area is small and cosy, and in the back there's a small restaurant. But the real star here is the food... oh my, it's simply wonderful. Home made, beautifully presented and full of flavour which makes everything else look bland. It can get busy at weekends, so book a table in the restaurant to be sure of a seat. Nice crowd of mixed ages.

I was in there on Friday 2nd October and they have a brand new menu which is Lancashire Tapas. Food ranging between £1 and £3. Things like rag pudding, hot pot, fish and chips, white bait, black pudding and yes you guessed it bumpy lane pie all in tapas size portions. Tremendous....although we did get carried away and ordered far too much. I would reccommend 2 people share 3 starters and 5 mains or 5 staters 4 mains + side dish of chips and veg. Well worth a visit. This pub is dog friendly but beware resident cat "snug" is first in the pecking order for all those leftovers.

Food ranging between £1 and £3...how inspired! Things like rag pudding, hot pot, fish and chips, white bait, black pudding and yes you guessed it bumpy lane pie all in tapas size portions, it was a first for me to sample rustic real northern cuisine all in one go! Although we did get carried away and ordered far too much, but at these prices who cares. The food was seriously good for what it is, and I will recommend making the little trip (and probably getting lost like I did) to hunt down this quaint little gem.
