Situated on the edge of the Northern Quarter conveniently close to the Arndale and Shudehill, The English Lounge is a cosy, traditional-looking boozer that serves down-to-earth pub grub and provides a bit of respite from the quirk and hipsterville of the NQ and the ostentatious tackiness of the Printworks posse. The homey cosiness of the place is exemplified with dark wood, leather sofas and quintessential Englishness - bookshelves in a pub anyone? I'm to be found at the Cityco meetings here and I always enjoy popping in. Sometimes I'll treat myself to a little wine beforehand and chat with some business owners, and that's always been lovely. The wine that is, not the business owners. Although for the most part they're alright, as it goes. There are all sorts of vouchers and offers associated with this pub so you could save a pretty penny too, especially with the meal deals. The service was polite, friendly and helpful and before I could even take my jacket off and get comfortable there was a pint in front of me and soon after that came the crayfish starter followed by the beef and onion pie with vegetables. Best of all the two course menu is very reasonably priced at only £8.95. Being on a strict time limit I skipped the dessert. All in all not a bad lunch experience. Given it's solid location, it was surprised that it was super busy both times we popped in. It's cozy inside with plenty of seating. As with many places in the UK, it's an order-at-the-bar type of thing. Meaning, no one is coming to a table to serve you. We grabbed a few pints and decided to head out back. There you'll find this huge courtyard like space with a giant tent above it. So it's technically outside and open-aired, but completely covered. Sprawling tables and benches are about that everyone shares. A great communal atmosphere! On our second visit here during our time in Liverpool, we grabbed a bite to eat. They have a good size food menu including shareables/bar snacks, classics, burgers, and sandwiches. Sadly they were out of the salt & pepper chicken we hoped to order, so instead we went with fish and chips. A GREAT second pick because it was truly your classic English dish - the fish was battered but not overly like they tend to do in the US. Love the chunky chips (fries) too. Although it's traditional and there's nothing that makes you go wow like some nearby trendy bars, it's definitely this which appeals to me - in fact I found a lovely little table towards the back with a roaring fire which warmed me up on a day when the weather was starting to look rather autumnal. I was served by 3 different staff and all were friendly, polite and welcoming. For some bizarre reason I decided to go for their 2 for £12.95 lunch deal (why I needed 2 courses at lunch I'm not sure but it seemed good value - plus I'd been in meetings all day so needed a fair amount of comfort food) and I went for the ham hock terrine to start with (lovely piccalilli) followed by the steak and ale pie with chips and vege's (devine). The quality and taste was excellent and with a very full belly I felt my work here was done! Speaking of work, it was also a good little spot to work for an hour on my laptop afterwards - with free wifi. But to our surprise, the inside of the restaurant is HUGE and multiple levels, so our family of 3 had no issues sitting somewhere and getting served immediately. Everything about this place is great. The drinks and food are delicious and reasonably priced. I really love the overall aesthetic. We didn't have to wait too long to receive anything that we ordered. There was a slight snafu with one of my drinks. My husband ordered a regular grey goose martini for me, but I ended up with what appeared to be a cosmo. When we brought this up to the server, I believe she said that they only make cocktails that are listed in their drink menu. A basic martini is not on the menu, but a cosmo is. The server asked if I would like to swap that drink out for something else on their menu, which I did. The food was very good and perfectly portioned. They have a kids menu, making this a good place for families. My husband ordered the french fries, peppercorn sauce, and scallops; I ordered the Mozzarella, peach, prosciutto ham salad; and my daughter had the kids mac n cheese. The Wharf is also very dog-friendly. We noticed that dogs were allowed inside and outside of the restaurant.
