We chose the pub sharing platter to start between 4.5 of us (our 2 year old daughter has a great appetite...) which consisted of some great fresh pork pies, sausages, scratchings, bread etc - and then followed this with some tasty roasts (mixed pork and beef really hit the spot) - with all the trimmings - lovely veg and of course those ace Yorkshires (check out my pics) Dessert was tasty with a great selection - Eton Mess and Choc Brownie were awesome. We weren't drinking for various reasons but they did have a fairly decent selection of traditional ales and wines. The soft drink selection was great too - Fentimans all round for us. A lovely country inn, great food, drinks and surroundings - can't wait to go back!

It's a BIG pub, well appointed on the outside with nice touches like an outdoor play area for children, nicely landscaped and decorated for Christmas with lights on the trees and such. On the inside it's perhaps even more impressive., Well decorated, a BIG bar and better yet, it's sectioned off so that there's a 'family' restaurant area, a central bar area (where you can also eat) and an over-18s only area. Well thought out. The decor is modern and cleverly lit and pays homage to Manchester Airport - unsurprising as it sits RIGHT UNDER the flight path - though you wouldn't know it from the inside. You can't here any noise at all from outdoors. The staffing levels are ridiculous. SO many waiters / waitresses (and yet probably not enough bar staff?!). We visited to eat but just briefly - the bar is well stocked, serves three or four lagers on draft and about the same in bitter / mild / ale. Extensive wine list and lots of spirits too. The menu is typical Hungry Horse - that is to say it is pub grub with the odd nice twist on the classics to make it feel a bit more 'upmarket'. We shared an Ultimate combo to start and that was very nice indeed. Really enjoyed that and even our 16 month old enjoyed picking at it. For main course I had a sirloin steak, medium rare. It was cooked perfectly, full of flavour. The peppercorn sauce that I ordered to go with had congealed a bit in its gravy boat, showing it came from a packet, so be warned. It came with well cooked chips, a fried tomato and mushroom (also peas, which I declined). Overall, I'd give it a 7 /10. This is where it goes downhill. My wife ordered a Chicken Diane. It looked very nice but it turned out the chicken was overcooked and tough as old boots. When the waitress checked back I told her this and she asked if I'd like to send it back. Of course we did! A few minutes later she returned and said: "We can offer you a full refund or you can order something else off the menu as this is how the chicken comes." So...the chicken at the Flying Horse comes overcooked! I knew she was only repeating what the idiot chef had told her so I didn't get stuck into her, but I was fuming. I requested the refund and we were preparing to go. The manager on the evening brought me a carefully folded fiver and said "Sorry about that." before simply walking off! Now I know a newly open venture has teething problems. I'm sure the chef was under pressure and I know mistakes will be made. BUT...as a newly opened venture you'd think they'd want to correct their mistakes rather than fob you off. It'll be along time before we return there, more for the casual attitude of what was no doubt an 18 year old chef and the older and should-know-better manager than for the mistake with the food. Try it. You might have a better experience than we did (in fact, we know people who have) but I call it as I see it and the Flying Horse (or it's staff, rather), right now, can kiss my *rse.

Very friendly staff when you could get a hold of one. We waited about 20 mins before anyone brought us a menu another 15 or so till they took our drink orders and another 20 mins before we were able to call over someone to take our order. Once we had our food and beer it was all good from there. Great food nice and hot. The wings here are absolutely delicious of your used to wings covered in sauce you won't get it here the sauce is drizzled on. Ordered the sharing platter for two cause well I can. The food is great and I am proud to say I finished it unlike my buddy. Who struggled ! They had a few beers on tap and were out of most of them so you should not even bother planning for that. I heard out side is nice but I was focused inside trying to get someone to notice me. From what I could hear it was noisy lot of kids outside. So yep that's it. Get the food, get beer in a bottle, be prepared to wait so bring a board game or something maybe a good book. Enjoy.

After Hyde's doing the Abel Heywood in town, it's cool to see Holt's doing something similar and really moving with the times in offering a relaxed (if somewhat still faux independent looking boozer) and multi-faceted 3rd place. I had a meeting here and decided to stay on for lunch so I can comment that the coffee (9 different blends - I only had one mind you...) was pretty good, the black and blue burger was tasty (lovely chips and sides - although the pit beans were a bit off in the spicing - a bit too much star anise I think...) and it was a good place to meet and also get some work done with loads of room to move around in and fairly quiet on a Thurs lunch. Although I wasn't partaking on this visit, the beer selection on draft was a good mix of Holt's and local breweries - plus regular lagers. What I was impressed with though was the large selection of bottles from Sierra Nevada (3 types), Founders All Day IPA and other great breweries. Ok so this place is very towny and I imagine could be a haven for the 'shirt and shoes brigade' on a weekend evening but overall it had enough to make me want to keep coming back. Nice work! ps amazing cake selection - check out my pic!

Gone is any mention of Holt's on signage and the whole look is trying to convince you it's an independent free hold. Even the Holt's branded pump clips are absent at the bar replaced with little chalk written clips. Overall this re 'un-branding' works and the pub was very busy though big enough to be full of people but still not rammed. Small touches linked the place to it's location right next to a train line, with signage alluding to a train station and concrete rail sleepers used as fencing in the beer garden. The beer was Holt's fairly unremarkable standard, though still far superior to most pubs normal selection of lagers, they had one guest beer on which was a pleasant pale but not amazing enough to have held it's name in my memory. The big selling point of this new refurbishment is the restaurant. You can tell a lot of money and thought had been placed into the new gastro focus. The place has been re done pretty much like most places you'll find in the Northern Quarter with lots of wood panelling and mis-matched chairs and edison style light bulbs. The dessert bar was the most impressive I've seen in any restaurant for a long time. A full ice cream bar on display as well as their huge selection of 5 inch deep cheesecakes. The menu was extremely varied but had a focus on the new trend in American style street food dining with pulled pork and hot dogs amid a selection of more standard choices like pizza or fish and chips. Everyone's food looked amazing and there was a general consenus that nothing served was sub par. My pulled pork hash was great, served with a mustard apple sauce and poached egg were spot on choices and a side of dirty beans which seemed to come with everything which they were calling P5 Pit Beans. Overall it's a local gastro pub done very well by a local chain which has been very underwhelming in recent years. But they are clearly trying to overhaul their image in selected locations around the city. I can only hope this happens in more of their locations and it was a very welcome change.

So whipping out yelp..We tried a nearby pub which was packed..in defeat and stomachs a-gurgling I rang this place and spoke to a John who was polite and promised us a table.. Eagerly we arrived to a lovely traditional pub with a fire and good vibes. We were led to a lovely dining room and seated. Looking around at fellow diners eating Yorkshire puddings the size of a large boat we were encouraged. They offer lamb, beef turkey or all three meats for 14.99. I chose the lamb Sunday dinner with mash, green beans, red cabbage, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips and a massive home made Yorkshire. There was little bit of a wait but God when it arrived it was one of the best Sunday dinners I have had in a very long time. The portion was generous and we even got cheese cauliflower for the side. We ate in utter silence and every single thing on that plate was cooked to perfection. These wolfed down we ended with a cheesecake each which was also divine and a decent portion. More expensive than your usual pub grub but a cut above and well worth it. Colleague had the fish and chips and was well received. Afraid I didn't try the beers but had a wide range or lagers and beers. I find the prices a little high for a pub serving standard beer around £3+ for a pint of carling/foster and a and a pint of a standard robbies ale, I went along the bar to see if I could bring it down having an range of £5.90 - £6.30. The actual pub itself is a lovely little place, really traditional setting Lowish ceilings lots of stained wood panels and beams, it is the kinda small local stereotype, the beers on tap are a standard affair with a few ales. Again I've not eaten here (this seems to be a theme of my reviews I really should eat more) so I can't comment further here. Sadly I really do feel the price lets this place down for a local, and let's be clear I happily pay prices for awesome beer the PSBH being a prime piece of evidence, if the beer warrants the price or if I'm in a premium location like the centre of a city. Unless someone else brings me here or if like tonight I'm here because a mates band is playing, I'll be elsewhere. The staff I will only give partial review on I've not been here enough, disinterested to the degree of ignoring you even when there is no one else to serve at the bar, and a bit bad at pouring and not spilling while getting it to you. The place from when I've been there has however always been at least half full so it must be doing something right
