What a great little pub tucked away just outside of Knutsford. I'm sure that they've changed the…read morename recently, but what hasn't changed is the great decor, excellent food and friendly service. It was the perfect lunch, and perfect lunch sized portions. Don't you hate it when you overeat and feel gross the rest of the day? I had their homemade roasted root vegetable soup, which was served with freshly baked mini loafs of bread and two different herbed butter. Ummm-- freaking yummy amazingness. The soup was delicious. I literally wanted to lick the bowl. I also had their micro green market salad which was served in a delightful little blue ceramic Kilner-like jar. My husband had the lamb shoulder shepherds pie with lovely peaks of mash and huge chunks of lamb-- a wonderfully delicious change from the mince you usually find in shepherds pie. Finished off with a perfectly frothed cappuccino, attentive staff, affordable prices and cozy atmosphere (the real fireplaces are a particular plus). There's also a lovely outdoor seating area in the back-- perfect for the summer. Check it out if you're ever in this neck of the woods!

I know that this is my in laws favourite place to eat but not being local to me I have never eaten…read morethere. That said it was my mother in laws birthday and I knew they were eating there in the evening with friends. I called up the pub to see if I could order a surprise birthday cake and pay over the phone. Although they said that they did not make birthday cakes they were happy to go to the local bakery and get me one I called up on the night not really expecting that they had as I had not been asked to pay anything. To my delight they had got the cake and I ordered a bottle of reasonably priced champagne at the same time. They couldn't have been more helpful even to the point of calling me back to say that my mother in law had almost been in tears when they gave her the champagne and told them my message. When the time for the cake came, they had added candles and the whole restaurant sang happy birthday. All in all they were great and made my mother in laws birthday really special!

Think I spent just over 16 quid for maybe 5 or 6 pints. Further, they have a pool table in the side room where the locals teach you about 'free play'. Nifty idea sticking those beer coasters into the pockets so you dont need to pay for each game. Its funny because I think the place would have been dead if one had to pay for each game of pool. In either case, I had a really good time here on both occasions and would suggest it to anyone.

The interior is comfortably furnished with a mixture of chairs and sofas to give a relaxed atmosphere. If you were looking for a traditional country pub though it's probably more on the stylish gastro end of the spectrum. That said, the food we had from starters to desserts was superb. Our group, which included a baby and a toddler, were well taken care of and we had a large table tucked away from the main dining area where we could spread out a bit. You can't travel light with young 'uns! Sunday roasts and British dishes head the menu, though the selection for all courses was pretty extensive - I opted for their oak-smoked chicken liver pâté followed by the Sunday roast platter (roast beef, roast turkey and loin of pork) and then sticky toffee and apple pudding (because dessert). Their bar stock includes cask-conditioned beers, real ales and bottles which was good to see. As a designated driver though, I was on the blackcurrant and lemonade! Service was attentive throughout and we were never made to feel rushed at any point. A super venue for a lazy Sunday lunch - will definitely return.

The restaurant is decorated to a good standard having apparently being recently refurbished, and has a nice dark cosy country pub feel. The carvery had a selection of the traditional sunday dinner sundries, roast and boiled potatoes, brocolli, colly, carrot & swede mash and stuffing balls with a cheesy filling. The gravy was lovely, thick and tasty and genuinely home made, the plates were big and the portion of meat was generous and you were able to choose more than one, but the portion of veg was a little mean for my liking, I'd of prefered to have helped myself. In summery the food was good quality and the surroundings pleasent, £8.95 is maybe a little expensive for a carvery but at least the quality was good and we'd definately return.

The pub itself is cosy and welcoming, full of character and very friendly, warm staff. Many little nooks where you can enjoy your meal and conversation with low level music in the background. It was a cold day so we were glad tat there were (many gas) open hearths around. It is located right next door to a ancient but very well tended church (St. Ostwald's). We decided to go with lunches from the Christmas offerings. We both enjoyed our (different) 3 courses (see the pics!). I have recalibrated my standards and so if I can only give Raphael in Bath 5 stars then it is going to be VERY tough for me to give 5 stars to anywhere else! We asked our hotel receptionists what was a god place to eat near the hotel and airport walking distance and they pointed us to "The Romper" although it's in an Odd location. The food was great.
