The Whistle Stop Cafe is a charming little place right in the middle of downtown Wiggins. They offer a variety of Southern items like shrimp poboys and fried catfish. Parking is available all around, especially after hours, and it is next to a busy intersection. We started with the large fried green tomato appetizer and they give you a bunch. We already ate three before I took the photo here. They had a nice breading on them that provided a great crunch, and I really liked the remoulade sauce that was included. I had the fried shrimp platter that came with two sides, so I got green beans and cole slaw. The shrimp were very small, which was disappointing, but they gave me a pretty generous portion. The sides were very good. My wife had a roast beef poboy and was very happy with it. Our server did a good job of keeping our drinks filled and we had no problems. Disappointed! We have eaten there on many occasions every time we come to Wiggins. My wife and I ordered the Shrimp and Catfish platter. On the platter were 3 strips of catfish about 5 inches long. The tiny shrimps consisted of 17 popcorn shrimps. For the price, we were ripped off. We learned our lesson. This is the last time that I will waste my time and my money. On the road in Mississippi again and found another gem. Was hungry for a tasty burger and came across the Whistle Stop in Wiggins. Tried the "Locomotive" burger. Beef patty topped with lettuce, pickle, fried green tomato, grilled onions on a jalapeño bun. A flavor explosion between your cheeks. The sour of the green tomato combined with the sweet grilled onions was a taste sensation I didn't expect. Add the warm tang of the jalapeño bun and it was a delight at every bite. This is not the Whistle Stop of old. I miss the original and since it has changed hands more than once, it's not the same. The first thing I noticed was the fishy oily smell when we walked in. The prices have all gone up. The fish plate lunch special is now $15.25. You get four pieces of fish, two hushpuppies and two sides. There were two of us and they could not get the right sides on the right plates. Not a big deal, we managed. But the fries were a combination of greasy old fries and fresh fries. My family and I went to the whistle stop twice in one day, the first and last time. The service was terrible, the excuses were ridiculous and the food was worse. We ordered all you can eat shrimp. The shrimp was so overcooked that it couldn't be peeled. We had to tear it out of the shells and just make a terrible mess. We were told that everything except the potato salad was made fresh there. Then we were told the reason the shrimp was so bad is that it comes cooked and frozen and it has to be re-cooked. Coming from someone who has eaten tons of shrimp and all kinds of seafood, that doesn't cut it. I would never go back to that restaurant because it was horrible and the price $24 for all you can eat and you can only eat a handful not happening again so nobody goes there pretty soon. They were open for business today and we were socially distanced. Hand sanitizer available on check in and check out. Waitresses were excellent and wore masks. The governor of MS implements statewide masks tomorrow so not sure how that will affect dining in as we did today. We started with unsweetened iced tea. Appetizers were fried dill pickle chips and fried green tomatoes. Both were excellent. Then we had the seafood platter and shared it between the two of us. It includes 1 stuffed crab, 3 large filets of fried catfish, handful of tasty small shrimp, few oysters, and 2 hush puppies (with 2 sides). We added sides of fried okra and coleslaw.(coleslaw very fresh and just a hint of sweet- just right). Then we shared a slice of warm pecan pie. Service was excellent with constant refills of tea and attention to our needs. I was raised in MS but have been gone for 30 years. I stopped in at Whistle Stop Cafe for a quick lunch while on a family camping trip and I was impressed! I had looked up some places to go in the little town, but there were not many so we decided to go here. I'm so glad we did because it was delicious! Their fried catfish was amazing! I read some of the reviews and CLEARLY, people believe that the sun rises and sets on this place. That, unfortunately, was NOT my experience....at all! The waft of of the odors of this place came across the railroad tracks like the siren songs of old....bidding and beguiling peckish wayward travelers to their doom. The bouquet of scents coming off this place was, unfortunately, misleading. Granted, it was busy. It WAS a Friday night. I understand that and am not unreasonable. I ordered our food and was told it would be about a 10-15 min wait. Ok.... no problem. Totally acceptable. However... 30 minutes later..... I was given 4 different excuses as to why my food wasn't prepared on time. I didn't complain or make a lot of noise. I paid for my food and left hoping that the wait would be worth it. At home, I opened the boxes. I ordered a shrimp po-boy and onion rings and ordered a burger and "Cajun" fries for my friend. So... let's begin, shall we? The burger was ok.... it's a burger and nothing Earth-shattering about that as were the onion rings. The sandwich and fries were another matter. Once I excavated and found the shrimp on the sandwich I popped one in my mouth. I was immediately assaulted by a conflagration of offensive flavors and odors. The shrimp tasted and smelled so utterly .."fishy".. as to make them completely unpalatable. I was very concerned that they were "off" and was so worried about the "freshness" of my sandwich that I refused to eat it for fear of it making me ill. The fries were a mess! A weak lump of sadness that reflects the darkness in the soul of the unfortunate who made them. Perhaps they were PREPARED by a Cajun but that's where it ended. These were the saddest, limpest, greasiest, and decidedly un-Cajun mass of french-fried potatoes to ever disgrace a plate. Horrifying. Truly awful. So, I shared my onion rings and he shared his burger and we didn't go completely hungry. I will NOT be going back to the Whistle Stop cafe anytime soon. I love me some Whistle Stop Café in Wiggins. My favorite dish is the Country Fried Steak with sawmill gravy, mashed potatoes with brown gravy and fried okra, although their fried catfish platter is pretty on point, too! I will say that there hasn't been a bad experience yet. The servers are always friendly and attentive and my drinks stay filled up. Whistle Stop does a few things really well. Their burgers are typically better-than-average, as are their blue plates, but the best thing on the menu is their catfish/fried shrimp platter. I typically go ahead and go "all in" with fried okra when I order it and it has never disappointed (nor has it ever not been immediately followed by a nap...be careful if you are getting behind the wheel.) The fish is lightly fried, adequately salted and shrimp has just enough pepper to satisfy. Honestly, there aren't many options for lunch in Wiggins unless you're looking for fast food or a buffet. Their fish coating is light and flavorful. I don't think there is any fresher seafood than what they serve here. They don't open for dinner on Monday, but they have all you can eat fish or boiled shrimp on Tuesday and Friday. Something that worth a trip. read more

I was there at 230 pm, and there were four or five tables full of folks, with even more taking orders to-go...means they are doing something right! Ordered the Texas Cheeseburger with bacon! Second time visiting this place , first time the food was great and the server was awesome , but my experience this time was awful the food was good but The server was not good at all and expected her 36 dollar tip for the table only refilled tea Drinks once and the soda drinks none at all had to ask another server for a refill plus to go boxes , I also got charged a 3.00 fee for my debit with no sign around notifying customers of this fee wasn't even told before card was swipe they just charged it and let you find out after wards , and not to mention the 18% tip she did not deserve for lousy unfriendly Service will not go back and will not recommend to anyone anymore !!! read more
