I visited Whisler's upon my arrival and first time in Austin! It's a cool yet unassuming spot. I like the eclectic decor and people-watching was even more interesting. Despite it being a little slow (it was Sunday evening) it took a while to get the bartender's attention. I ordered an Old Fashioned and despite the wait, it was perfect. I took my drink outside to listen to some live music. I neglected to get the band's name but they were awesome. They played some country and Bluegrass which made me even more excited to be at Whisler's and in Austin! I look forward to visiting again. read more

Last night my wife and I made the mistake of going to another cocktail bar that wasn't Whislers. Big mistake. ~$30 and 45 unimpressive minutes later, we hightailed it over to East 6th. First thing I noticed is that they nixed their dinky parking situation to make room for even more patio tables. Perfect. It's not like Whisler's really needed the space, but with the interior bar unmanned and COVID in the air, it's a welcome addition. I'm always surprised when people say the cocktails here are unimpressive. I don't know where else they are drinking (in ATX at least), but I'd appreciate a clue-in. Whisler's does a damn fine job; we always drink too much here because we can't stop sipping on inventive and tasty cocktails. Last night's outing had two standouts I'd like to highlight. First, the Drab Majesty. With rum, cachaça (a fermented sugarcane liquer), beet, raspberry and lime, the drink struck a sweet spot between sweet and savory, with some carribean flair to boot. Next, the Feel Good Hit of the Summer, mint julep-inspired with an attitude. Couching the bourbon inside a fruity melangerie of cantaloupe, apricot, lemon and lemongrass made for a supremely sippable summer drink - a sublime libation if I ever had one. Last note; I love coming to Whisler's and walking out having tried multiple types of alcohol I never knew existed. It's always fun to learn a thing or two! read more

Stopped for a highly recommended old fashion and sat ourselves outside on at a picnic table. The drink was well made, but the cost didn't quite fit with the "divey" environment. (Stuck for a good description) It was pricey. We didn't go inside, so if the inside held higher standards, I could re-evaluate my review. The outdoor bathrooms were clean and antique feeling. The interior of Whisler's is very cool. I went twice during my visit to Austin. The bar can get very busy. It can take quite a bit of time to place your order, but, once you do, the bartenders are quick to make your drink. I had an old fashioned (my favorite drink) and I really did like it. It was strong and the right amount of sweet. I did try another drink from their menu and also enjoyed it. I believe the pricing of the drinks is very comparable to any cocktail bar. The only thing is that it gets extremely dark in the main interior bar. I do not know if they turn on other lights or light candles later in the night, but when I left, late evening, there was only the smallest glow in the bar. And I wish I had known that the upstairs bar was a different type of bar (mezcals), as I would have checked it out before I left Austin. read more

Lively spacious bar, thats perfect for day drinking. It has a second level, outdoor space, two large bar areas on the first floor. As well as a food truck in the back that sells thai fusion eats. After arriving at about 5pm I shuffled through a light but enthusiastic crowd to the back bar for the Hot Buttered Banana. This drink reminded me loosely of a Hot Toddy and what I imagine a Butter Beer from Harry Potter tasted like. It was sweet from the banana but more rich in flavor from the butter beer. It was especially appreciated on a seasonally warm night. This place was filled with large groups, enjoying the weather and drinking for fun. Dogs are also allowed, so you might see a couple cute furry pals running around. Do try the foodtruck on the back once hunger strikes. First time coming here and made in time for happy hour, the drink prices range from about $8-11. I tried the Hemingway Daiquiri and Old Fashioned, 2 of my favorite classic cocktails that are both accompanied by a Luxardo cherry.. of course :) I ordered at the main bar just inside, had a great bartender, took his time to make drinks but managed the crowd really well and effectively. My drinks were great, we got them quickly, the price was really decent for the quality and the atmosphere was really nice and calm for the hour or 2 hours I was there. I went to Whisler's for after-dinner drinks with my husband Matt B. during a weekend visit to Austin. I'm pregnant and therefore sober for once in my life, but he spent the whole trip accompanying me to all my work shit and deserved all the cocktails he could drink. The place was quiet when we showed up at 10:00 on a Sunday, and we got a seat at the bar, which was mostly empty. It filled up as we sat there, so there was much more of a crowd when we left an hour or so later. Not what I would've expected on a Sunday night. The interior was attractive, with high ceilings and stone walls, like a tiny fortress or castle. The ambiance was cozy and relaxing, and the bartender who helped us was great. I nursed a ginger beer while Matt put away two cocktails, and she didn't charge us for my drink. Matt had a Song for the Dead and a Little Black Number, and he seemed to like both, though he found the first one surprisingly sweet. My ginger beer didn't trick me into thinking it was a real drink, but it was tasty and nice to sip on while we talked and enjoyed the atmosphere. I can't speak for the cocktails firsthand, but I liked Whisler's and would recommend it if you're looking for a good bar to sit back with a glass of, well, something. read more

The never ending bar! I keep thinking I'm in the back room but there are endless rooms for your group or date! There are smaller more intimate tables in the front of the bar and the back bar leads to outside picnic table style seating! This bar is good for any sized group! The lighting in the front is super dark and intimate while the back bar is more lit up and made for moving around. There is also a food truck (Golden Lion) in the very back next to the bathrooms. They check your ID right at the door. There is current hits music playing throughout the bar. There are a couple of parking spots next to the bar and some street parking. There is also valet parking for $6/hour across the street. Their current drink menu is titled Winter 2020 so their menus must be seasonal. I got the "Christine" ($11) and it was great! An East Austin staple with an eclectic and quirky décor. If you are looking for a quiet, stuffy cocktail bar, this place is not what you're looking for (at least on the weekends). I would characterize it as sort of a slightly dressed up dive bar with some very unique vibes. The interior has the feeling of an old wild west sort of saloon, crossed with an old cathedral, crossed with an old hunting lodge. Past patrons have written messages on the walls and it is interesting reading some of their musings while sipping on an old fashioned. The exterior bar is fairly standard, although there is a random bath tub located in the middle of the backyard area, which is another interesting quirk. Generally, the cocktails here are quite good; sometimes they pre-make the cocktails in a larger batch, cutting down on the wait time a bit. My experience has generally been positive with the pre-made cocktails. One downside here is that it is very popular and is therefore quite crowded much of the time. During the busiest hours on weekend nights, you can expect to encounter a line to get in and another line to get drinks. That said, if you're with the right company, a few minutes wait for cocktails is pretty tolerable. If you are visiting Austin, this is one good spot to check out to experience the "charm" of the area. Additionally, being on 6th, this place is very walkable to other bars and makes for a great place to start or end the night. read more

I've been here a good bunch of times with their proximity to other East 6th staples. Whisler's is a solid cocktail bar in an area that certainly leans more in the beer bar direction than the rest of town. The environment is pretty good whether you're looking for a comfortable date spot or if you want to hang out on the patio on a nice night with a bigger group. On weekends it can get fairly crowded, but I can't remember a time I've had an issue getting a seat. The drinks are all solid, I haven't had one that's stood out as particularly good or bad, and the prices are about in line with most of Austin for cocktails. Though if you're hopping around the bars in this area the per drink price might sticker shock you a bit. Overall, if you're in the East 6th area looking for a cocktail bar you won't be upset you came. But if you aren't dead set on having your night out around here I think there are much better options in other parts of town for cocktail bars. read more

My friends and I tried out Whistlers last night and we had a pretty fun experience. They have a large outdoor area, insulated for the cold, which is appreciated. The indoor space was pretty cool and decorated for the holidays with lights. It made the area pretty cozy. I was surprised we were able to find a table and seats for our group of 5 on a Saturday night, but we might have gotten lucky or most people choose to sit outside. When I walked up to the bar I was helped fairly quickly. This is definitely a "hipster" type bar. Their cocktails are mostly over $10. I ordered the dreamcicle and it was lightly fruity, creamy and delicious 4/5. My husband and friend ordered an old fashion, which they order quite often from other bars/restaurants and they visit, and didn't prefer this one. Some people like a spicier whiskey, but they use Wild Turkey, which they didn't prefer. I can't remember what my other friends ordered, but they liked theirs. Overall, we had a good time. read more

You can do private mezcal tastings in their private room upstairs (that's what my girlfriends did for a bachelorette party), or you can dine at the indoor bar area inside, or sit on the wooden benches outside and enjoy live music. I came on a Sunday when they were having a crawfish boil and it was very lively and fun. Dogs are welcome (major bonus!). Their cocktails are excellent! I tried: -ampersand (Cranberry Infused Vodka, Blackberry, Hibiscus, Lemon) -firebird (Mezcal, Lime, Strawberry, Basil, Pepper) -margarita -2 other cocktails I cannot remember the names of The cocktails are beautiful, well balanced (not too sweet, some have a nice kick of spice and some have zest) and really unique. The decor here is even more unique. There's some taxidermy, tattered concrete walls with exposed mesh or netting, rabbit statues, bones, random old knick-knacks and art that look to be very abandoned/desert/south-of-the-border-esque. There is also a food truck called Thai-Kun that is stationed on their property. I haven't tried it yet but it looks delicious. For the mezcal tasting private party, the girls got to try different mezcals and learn about the different profiles and flavors of each. They got to drink out of fun clay little pots and try different flavored salts. The private mezcal tastings can accommodate groups up to 20 people. read more
