My friend Olivia and I went to Obstacle No. 1 recently for an after dinner drink. Definitely make…read morereservations online as it's a small space. It's next door to their sister restaurant, Lovejoy. Walking in, the space is very dimly lit with a nice bar and some cozy seating. We were directed to a couch and a couple of low chairs. The menu is organized into different "chapters," with different themes for each chapter. They also have beer, wine, spirit-free options, and a spirits list. I wanted something fun, so I chose the Don the Beachcomber, a rum-based tiki cocktail that is flamed tableside. My friend got the Obstacle No. 1, which is a bourbon drink that they smoke at your table. Very theatrical and fun! These drinks were $20+ so pretty pricey, but worth it for a fun occasion. We had a nice time just relaxing and catching up. I would say it's not a great spot for a large group, but definitely a fun date night place. They have a small food menu of offerings from the restaurant next door that sounded tasty. We had just eaten but I'd be interested in their small plates. I'm so glad I got to experience this place. It feels like you're transported to a secret speakeasy when you enter!

Edwin Coe's Spirits (north of Churubusco on 33) - a nice place for a couple or small group to go…read moreand relax I'm sharing a lesser known secret to those that like relax in a peaceful atmosphere that has unique food & drink offerings. Edwin Coe's is located north of Busco on 33. They make unique spirits there in this country setting. The place is a bit small but wide open. They have vintage style furnishings that are comfortable. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. Edwin Coe's can be popular in the warmer months when there is live music. Otherwise, it is not very busy - even on a Friday or Saturday evening prime time. This makes EC a great place to meet a group of 4-8 people. Especially if you want to sit and talk or play some table games. We've been many times and always had a good experience. I have attached drink and food menus so you know what they have. EC makes most of their own alcohol. They have a very innovative menu of drink offerings. Many are very attractive...and all tasty! The food menu is very narrow. It isn't "bar food" and comes at a moderate cost. All food is made in their on site kitchen - as they used to host the Fork and Fiddle food truck. Food has a bit of gourmet flair while keeping the breadth of selections fairly basic/popular. Give Edwin Coe Spirits a try - especially if you have a small group that likes to relax and socialize.

Upon our visit, the establishment was empty and quiet. The staff displayed exceptional friendliness…read moreand cheerfulness, although the menu presented limited food options. The prices of the beverages were somewhat steep in comparison to the portions received. I really wish there happy hour, was longer than an hour. I appreciate distilleries and would like to return in the summer to experience the outdoor setting. We had one drink and then left to eat at Peppi's..

Common Spirits is one of my favorite weekend of after-party hangouts. I love the cool atmosphere…read moreand the drinks. They are fab. All the drinks are handmade, everything from the mixers to some of the liquors are made in-house. Each drink has 2 ounces of liquor in it, yet you will only pay $6-12 for a custom drink. One of my favorites here is the Whisky Slushie, it's no longer on the menu but you can request one! There are drink specials each night as well. The owner, Jamie, can always be found behind the bar mixing and serving up drinks. This place gets PACKED on a weekend night after 9pm, usually it is standing room only at that point. Since the venue is small but the place is popular, go expecting to stand but with a good chance of snagging a chair or booth as people leave. There is not much room for large crowds. It's definitely an intimate, cozy setting with good tunes, the best mixed drinks in town, and fun people. Food! Yes, the do serve this too. They have a great bibimbap bowl and a few other selections. If you just want some snacks, I highly suggest their hummus and pita plate or their chips and dip. Homemade and delicious!
