The bike I rented had crooked handle bars, a broken water bottle cage (that scratched me several times) and a seat that would not stay put. Rented a road bike here the week of 8/31. Very cool guys to deal with. Devin got me on a Scott carbon for a great price. Made adjustments for me, etc. Next day, took the bike in for a chain cleaning as I'd found some dirt during the ride the day before. Austin took care of that for me as well. Very chill vibe in the place, and they are busy most of the time. Still, they have time to help you out if you need it. While I was waiting for my chain cleaning, Thomas and Dave were helping a family get outfitted for MTB bikes. They were doing a great job of offering up correct sizing a other tips to help that family have a fun day. Many thanks to Dave, Thomas, Austin, and Devin for helping me have a great week of riding! The guys at this location are friendly, fun and knowledgeable about the Vail area. All 8 of us were fitted for bikes and on our way to Vail pass in about 10 minutes. Their computer system was having an IT bad day. That's the only reason they missed the 5th Star. My advice is to shop around for prices we had a $20 per bike price difference. That's $160 bucks saved. read more

I recently arrived in Vail with a couple friends, one of whom is local. He brought us to Wheel Base on the first day so we could rent bikes. We were immediately greeted by a nice and warming attitude. They were super helpful in getting us what we needed without any trouble. We were all suited with high quality bikes that fit our size and weight. On top of that, we were quickly in and out of the shop, without having to spend much of our day dealing with the bike rental. On June 8th, I contacted Wheel Base via their website. Over the next week I conversed with them about our plans to get a ride up Vail Pass and then bike to Frisco and then back to their shop in Lionshead. After working out the cost and details, I asked if there was anything else to confirm my reservation for my wife and me. I provided them with the additional requests, which was a phone number and our heights for bike sizing. We were all set for the 11 am tour after providing this information. A few weeks later we arrived to Vail and the evening before our tour the weather looked iffy. Our hotel's concierge suggested we call Wheel Base to see if we could pay an additional fee to start earlier in the day. When I called them, Wheelbase said we did not have a reservation and they would not even be offering the tour to Vail Pass despite that we had made a reservation three weeks before. They said they had us pencilled in for a different tour that would be much less challenging (15 miles all downhill in Glenwood Canyon) and there was no way they could accommodate us since the tours were in different areas. We had trained for the past few weeks to do the 42 mile trip up the east side of Vail Pass, and we had worked out with Wheel Base over several emails exactly what this would entail. They said while they had dropped the ball there was nothing they could do. We were already pretty screwed by them, but we would have been totally screwed over if we hadn't called the day before due to the weather. We would've arrived at the shop at 10:30 to find no tour and no other options (we waited the last day for our big ride to acclimatize better to Vail). Will from Wheel Base said that even if I wrote a bad review it would not hurt their business and they just didn't care. I was pretty upset at this point so my wife talked to Will. Will reiterated that despite our emails with Wheel Base, they would not be taking us. She did get him to call another bike shop next door. He called back and said this other shop would take us on the tour. However, when we called that new shop, they didn't have the details of what we wanted to do (there is the regular tour that is all downhill and much shorter, whereas we wanted to also go uphill). Will did not make the full arrangements for us and the new bike shop now wanted to charge us close to triple the price Wheel Base quoted. We frantically called around and found a new shop on our own that did not try to take advantage of us. We explained the whole story to them and they were so accommodating and understanding. After all, we had trained for weeks and travelled from Texas to do this bike ride, and Wheel Base nearly ruined our entire vacation. Our tour with Wheelbase was supposed to be the highlight of our big trip to Vail. It was a total nightmare. read more

We rented three bikes from Wheelbase yesterday. The guys that helped us were very knowledgeable. They gave our teenagers very nice demo bikes (that they probably didn't deserve) at a rate that was far better than the bike shop at our fancy hotel. Several people on Vail Mountain commented on how nice the bikes were and mentioned how Wheelbase has the best bikes. I'm glad we went there. We felt like we got great bikes at a great rate from people who love and respect the bikes they rent. Additionally we almost didn't make it back to the shop to return the bikes at closing time (6pm), the guys were very nice and were not upset. That kind of relaxed attitude is always appreciated when you are traveling with teenagers. Wheelbase Bike Shop is within walking distance to the gondola. Very easy to rent and return bikes. They have a big assortment of well cared for bikes and t-shirts and other gear to buy. read more

Just finished 3 day demo road bike rental and all went smoothly. One of the few area shops that lists the brand/model of bike and in store discount cards made it $33/day. They made sure of fit, test ride and put on new pedal for our clip shoes. Small and friendly shop highly recommend. read more

They got us set up with 4 Scott Sparks including our SPD pedals, then we enjoyed four fantastic days on the downhills and trails at Vail.
