It gives us the chance to spend some time in the air and learn the area in a unique way. We took off from Friday Harbor, and flew to Orcas Island and back. Lou is a terrific pilot and instructor, and the Piper is a terrific aircraft. We had great visibility and the trip was smooth. It was a wonderful few hours. Next up, the biplane!

This morning while eating breakfast, my husband saw a flyer for AeroClassic. We called to see if…read morethey could fit us in and Lou was wonderful about setting up a 2pm flight for us. We arrived a little early, the building is extremely easy to find and it gave us time to gaze at the airfield and a couple little planes. When Lou arrived he was super friendly and went over the plan for our Introductory Flight for Two. As I have never flown before he gave me a short explanation of aerodynamics and how to use the rudders to turn the plane (very useful information once we got into the sky!). Lou was an amazing teacher in the air and let me guide the plane and decide where to go in that time period. When my time was up, we landed on Orcas Island to switch pilots and let my husband fly. Lou was a great teacher, he was very patient and kind. After this amazing experience with Lou; both my husband and I want to take private pilot lessons, we only wish that Lou was closer to be our teacher!

Quite location about 15 min drive to Friday Harbor or a little bit shorter ride to Roche Harbor. Peter, the owner is a super nice guy. The bedroom loft makes for a challenging bathroom run in the middle of the night - not for the clumsy or the big and tall...low loft ceiling and a steep set of steps up and down, but there is alternative access on the outside from the upstairs deck. It's fully furnished with a stove, refrigerator and microwave, TV, WiFi, jacuzzi, and a charcoal grill. We didn't touch the TV so I can't report cable or reception. Frogs barked all night, owls hooted in the trees... it was right up our alley; we enjoyed it thoroughly. Quite rustic with just enough amenities to maintain contact with inquiring mothers and to make hot meals and take hot showers. About 15-20 minutes from Friday Harbor, the ferry and grocery store.

Do you want some adrenaline with gentle aerobatics ? He can deliver! Want a calmer, more sedate flight? He can do that, too. The views are breathtaking, you even go over the top of Mount Constitution. The landing was incredibly smooth. This is the best thing to do on Orcas!

The room was large with a balcony looking out to the lake, mini fridge and a wet bar area. The view on the balcony was lovely but the walls that separate your balcony to your neighbors do not go all the way down. Because we stayed at the lodge, our stay came with breakfast. It was a continental style breakfast with freshly made omelet and potatoes. It was pretty good but the wait can be long. I recommend getting in as soon as they open. The stars from the breakfast were the pancakes and their in-house made granola. They had a pancake maker which made perfect little pancakes. And their granola! So delicious. Full of nuts and fruit pieces. They won't tell you the recipe but you can buy per pound to take home. Around the resort, there were lawn games you could play. Bikes, canoes, and pedal boats to borrow. There was a children's activity area and a general store which were closed when we went.

Enter Becky, of Rhode Trips. The Hotel de Haro had two recommended taxi services, as Uber and Lyft are not on San Juan Island....Yelp provided mixed reviews on one, only a few (very good) on Rhode Trips. But, as usual, we trusted in Yelp. A great choice it was! The owner and driver is Becky. She was super efficient and responsive. All we really needed was a quick ride, but she gave us deets and intel on things we could do on the island. All proved worthwhile. Most of the taxi services on the island are tour guides as well, and most reviews look at that aspect. But, even if you're just needing a quick ride.......think of it as an Uber XL......because her clean Chrysler van is pretty spacious.....Becky is now our go-to transport solution!
