Great guides, but terrible management and false advertising…read more While the actual cycling roads were great and our on-the-ground guides worked hard, TerraTrek/Crystal Seas fell far short of the premium experience they advertise. Management's canned response to their after tour survey reinforced how disengaged they are. The Bad: Tour activities advertised such as "Farm -to-Table" dining and a local winery tasting that didn't happen. The "one night on our own" was 2 nights of buy your own dinner. Zero Behind-the-Scenes Coordination: We were routed to points of interest that were closed. Management clearly didn't coordinate with local businesses for our tour group. Disappointing Meals: Picnic lunches were frequently salads assembled by our guides while we waited --not fulfilling for a bike tour. At our group dinner and breakfast at Friday Harbor House, service was embarrassingly slow once they realized we were a tour group. Management did cancel future sit down breakfasts at a nice restaurant and substitute takeout breakfast sandwiches picked up by the guides. Tour reps did not attend restaurant meals to advocate for us when service and food was subpar. The Good: Our guides were great and did an admirable job managing snacks, lunch prep, and sharing local info. They did the best they could with minimal support from management. Bottom Line: You are paying for a premium guided tour, but getting a poorly coordinated itinerary with subpar meal planning. Management needs to step up.

A better trip in a more perfect boat could hardly be imagined. Traveling with Pacific Catalyst is totally unlike a conventional cruise. It is like being at a fabulous house party with tiny group of remarkable friends on gorgeous historic boat. I thought it would be a great experience gift, although we were nervous initially because we had never been on a tiny, three-seater aircraft before. I spoke with a nice gentleman when I called in to set up our reservation two weeks prior. Sorry I didn't get his name. He was professional and gave detailed information about what to expect. I requested a confirmation email, which he couldn't provide immediately, but he said someone else in the office should be able to create one for me and send it the next business day. I got it as promised. We got to the Westwind office at the airport a few minutes before our reservation time. Our pilot, Scott, was at the front desk, all ready to go. We shook his hand, and he led us out to the little plane. He gave us a nice run-through of the door, seat belts, headsets. Shortly after, we were on the runway, preparing for takeoff. The tour was a delight. It was a beautiful day, mostly clear skies. The views from up above were breathtaking. We easily forgot how nervous we were about being on a tiny plane because we were just so amazed by the views and the whole experience. Scott was knowledgeable about the islands and historical events that took place there. He was also great with answering our questions. Scott did a very smooth landing that we barely felt anything, too. He's a real pro. When we got off the plane, my fiancé needed to use the restroom, and even though he didn't plan on heading back to the office, he took the time to take us there so that we could have access to a restroom. What a memorable experience. I highly recommend contacting these guys if you want to do a scenic tour of the San Juans in a super-cool fashion.

I have been to the Lopez Island Ferry Terminal/Dock a few times, both on my own and with my family…read more Part of why I enjoy this ferry terminal so much is because there is not much to do. It has less to do in the immediate surroundings than the other Washington State Department Of Transportation (WSDOT) ferry terminals in the San Juan Islands. On a recent day adventure on Lopez Island on the 29th of April 2020, I arrived a little under two hours in advance of the ferry to Anacortes. My phone had very little battery left and I didn't bring a book so I had to figure out something else to do. I looked over my paper Washington State map, stared at the trees for a while (I love tall trees), and then saw a small furry critter scamper across some cement blocks (the blocks kind of looked like stone guard rail pieces for reinforcement to keep dirt from falling). I grabbed my camera (not camera phone) and spent the rest of the time watching for this little furry critter and trying to get pictures of it. What was it? It was a chipmunk! It was running back and forth collecting food and other things. So cute, and filled me with joy. Then M/V Kitsap arrived to take us back to Anacortes and I thought I was going to burst with happiness (I love it when I get to ride the ferries built in Seattle). It was the perfect end to the day's Lopez Island adventure. There is a restroom if you need to go while you are waiting. The entrance is turned away from the holding lanes to provide maximum privacy while using. The Lopez Island Ferry Terminal is a good place to sit back and relax and take in your nature surroundings.

I take my rare opportunities for ferry travel very seriously, and that's why I appreciate it when…read morethere's a nice, big, sturdy dock to securely hold the big metal floating behemoth in place while my vehicle (and others) are loaded/unloaded. And I can safely say that the Lopez Island Ferry Dock does the job quite well. While it's been years since I visited Lopez, it was a stop on my recent superferry trip from Friday Harbor to Anacortes, and I found myself enthusiastically hurrying to the front (er, back?) of the ship to watch the vehicles pull out onto the island. Well, the one vehicle that was pulling out onto the island on this particular Sunday evening journey. Still, the ferry did its duty as the car left the boat and traveled over the oft-scary-sounding "kerplunk" ramp that serves as a temporary bridge between the vessel and land. And - aided by recently-upgraded pillars on both the port and starboard - the ferry stayed firmly in place while several cars loaded for their journey back to the mainland. My only complaint about the Lopez dock is that there are no services available. So make sure to bring a snack and some water if you think you'll be hungry. 'Cuz it's a long drive back to town (well, really only a few miles) if you forgot anything.
