I am a professional environmental scientist who has studied and researched the effects of noise pollution on marine mammals. Upon being asked if the noise from boating activity affected the orcas and other marine mammals, the tour guide responded "Nah, not really. They're all used to it since they grew up around them." This information is inherently false, numerous studies have confirmed that anthropogenic marine noise pollution negatively impacts an orca's ability to communicate, hunt, mate, and survive in their environment. The harmfulness of noise pollution is nothing new, look it up and you will find a plethora of articles, research papers, and even award winning documentaries (Sonic Sea). If you appreciate and care about these species and their conservation, then you deserve to know the truth. Stephanie did a great job pointing these out and the boat driver got us close enough for me to get some great pictures. I saw over 120 birds and over 20 different species. All-in-all it was an excellent day out.

Making a reservation the night before for my husband and I bc he has health conditions that can change suddenly. So the next morning when he had an episode and was not able to go on the tour the company refused to return our money. I do understand some policies are in place for a reason, but we did not put anyone else out signing up for this tour the night before.

It was not accidental-- they motored toward it. I was shocked. Even worse, their position was cornering the whale toward a cliff. Our boat (with Outer Island) stayed much further back and I was grateful for that. I know Mayas has a good rep, but I was upset by what I saw and tried to get a few pictures of.

If you have a boat (or, even better, a friend with a boat) and you live anywhere in the vicinity of…read morethe San Juan Islands then fill 'er up and head on over to Sucia Island State Park. I recently was invited out with some friends on their new boat (did I mention how lucky I feel sometimes?) and we had an AMAZING day tied up at the main dock, barbecuing fresh salmon, tossing back a few cold ones, playing some cards, and enjoying a nice relaxing Sunday on the island. There's a lot to love about Sucia. It's isolated (accessible only by boat), uncrowded (because, let's face it, not everybody has a boat), unscathed, and beautiful...yet still has a few "creature comforts" that we semi-outdoorsy types love (like pit toilets, picnic tables, and even cell phone service). If you don't have a boat you can catch one from Orcas or another nearby island - some will even haul your kayak over, too, so you can enjoy some quality time paddling around the island and its beautiful inlets and bays. There are also several lovely campsites right by the main boating dock - can't wait to get back here with my tent, my kayak, and a good book or two. Just remember, if you go on a weekend day get here early for the best spot at the dock!

It is obvious Christine and Jeffrey take each winter to make everything better on the boat down to the smallest item or storage. From the beginning of scheduling, Sarah happily answered every question promptly. Christine served top notch food from her wood burning stove. Delicious pastries, breads, soups, seafood, salads and appetizers. She helped me slow down, take a breath and see the beautiful world of Misty Fiords National Monument. It was absolutely breathtaking. Jeffrey was so much fun, so knowledgeable about many subjects. He was happy to change course on the boat when the whales were seen. What a pleasant experience to have a trip adapted to the environment. I would highly recommend this trip. I'm already looking at which one I want to do next!
