That led me to making purchases, learning everything I could online/videos, adopting a normal practice of dryfiring to hone techniques, and monthly range visits to apply and adjust what I was learning. Admittedly this has tapered a bit in the last year or so with a growing family. That said, I've invested a lot of time and effort over the years and, while I'm certainly no expert and still have many deficiencies, am also not completely brand new. Fast forward to now, I took a class with David who I found to be a wealth of knowledge and very thorough in what he teaches. When it comes to grip and stance, he is able to illustrate key techniques very clearly to help you find the right technique and make small corrections that are very impactful. Much like having a trainer at a gym, David is able to closely examine your overall form to give insights and immediate feedback that you may not realize on your own. He gives you different principles in how to approach and think about the overall process as well. I noticed a dramatic improvements in speed and accuracy over the course of our session. His teachings also extend beyond just firearm proficiency but also general understanding of self-defense scenarios and what are the factors you should consider when it comes to protecting yourself and family. Talking things through with him overlaying his insights made me realize there were many things I hadn't ever factored into my thought process. Highly recommend overall.

Laughable that a person can be doing something this long and still not know what the eff they are talking about. An upper receiver is not a firearm under federal law (27 CFR § 478.12), is not serialized, and is not regulated on its own. Barrel length by itself does not magically create an SBR. An SBR determination requires a rifle with a shoulder stock and a barrel under 16 inches (26 U.S.C. § 5845(a), (c)). That determination depends entirely on the serialized lower receiver--which in my case is a legally owned and DOJ-registered semi-automatic pistol, not a rifle, and is configured to be California compliant under California Penal Code § 30515. This is basic, entry-level firearms law. Being incorrect is one thing. Being aggressively, confidently incorrect--and then doubling down when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about--is something else entirely. Instead of listening or checking the law, the owner insisted I was committing a serious federal felony and spoke to me in a hostile, unprofessional manner and cursed at me, all while in front of other patrons. Embarrassing for him to say the least. This is peak FUDD behavior: outdated knowledge, refusal to learn, and ego over facts. Shops like this don't just inconvenience customers--they actively spread misinformation that can get people in real trouble, especially in California. If you've been "in the business for 42 years" and still don't understand the difference between an upper receiver, an SBR, and a compliant AR pistol, that's not experience--that's willful ignorance. Do yourself a favor and avoid gun stores that let pride replace competence.

I did a few days' worth of research on classes and instructors in my area and eventually decided Veterans Training Group was the best around. They offer an ample selection of classes for new gun owners like me and more advanced shooters. I enrolled in their NRA Basic Pistol course on a date that best fit my schedule. I was able to hop onto a Zoom meeting with Steven Hung shortly after I got off work and he took the time to get to know what I was looking to get from the course, what made me decide to become a gun owner, and he tailored the content to emphasize certain things that were relevant to my situation. Steven answered all the questions I had going in and all the new questions I had as we covered the materials. At the end our call, we agreed to meet at the La Puente Firing Range for the live fire portion of the course. I got the opportunity to apply the concepts from the course with my own gun. I'd been to a firing range 3 times before without any training or guidance beyond random YouTube videos I'd found and just "doing what felt right." Up until then, my untrained results had been "OK" but nothing special. This time, with Steven's instruction, guidance, and tips, I saw my accuracy improve DRAMATICALLY in just a few magazines' worth of shots and started understanding the fundamentals of shooting. I walked away from that live fire session ready to hit the range again ASAP to practice and hone the skills Steven taught me that evening. I look forward sharpening my skills as a new shooter and highly recommend Veterans Training Group to anyone who wants to develop their shooting skills. I already have my eye on their Intermediate, Advanced, and Home Defense pistol courses. If/when I decide to get a rifle, too, you bet I'll be looking at their rifle courses as well!

Overall they made/utilized the training experience to teach safety and protection fun as well as a team effort. They were good to us, and I'm confident that you'll be in capable and safe hands.

Not knowing much about what I had just bought I went home and looked it up. I paid about half of what that shotgun goes for at Bass Pro. I was pretty happy with that purchase and very happy the guys behind the counter had my back and best interest in mind. PS. The shotgun in the photo is not the one I bought. As…read moresomeone who likes to be prepared, I appreciated the emails from Juan clearly outlining the expectations for the training, including what to bring, maps showing where to go, and paperwork to fill out ahead of time. As a relative beginner when it comes to firearms, I was a pretty nervous going into it but everyone on the Medic Up team was so professional and patient. They had good senses of humor too, which made the class fun and eased my nerves. There were 18 people in my training, and plenty of instructors. Someone was always there to help me when I needed it. Victor and Sebastian helped me with my grip and trigger pull which significantly improved my accuracy. Not only are these guys very knowledgeable and skilled when it comes to firearms, you can tell they are passionate about it as well. Beyond actually shooting a gun, they also provided education regarding life saving measures and the importance of legal representation. Matt led the legal portion, and he had a vast understanding of every bill/law pertaining to 2A rights. It was very eye opening and inspired me to do my own research. Sebastian presented the medical info and you can tell he knows his stuff. He demonstrated how to respond to gun shot wounds to different parts of the body, such as using a tourniquet, packing a wound, or using a chest seal. When I got home I ordered a few more things for my emergency kit based off his recommendations. Day 2 was in a classroom, led by Randy. He was incredibly knowledgeable and answered every question and hypothetical situation thrown at him. He provided a lot of clarity regarding when you can legally defend yourself using your firearm. Also, I received my course completion certificate from Juan by the end of the day. Overall, this was a very organized, well-rounded course led by professionals. Despite my nerves going into it, there wasn't a moment where I regretted being there or felt uncomfortable. TBH I liked it so much I wish it was longer! It was engaging and informative and I walked away learning way more than I thought I would. I am excited to continue to hone my skills and I will definitely be taking more courses with Medic Up in the future.

10/10 Weekend and experience, I can't recommend MedicUp ENOUGH!…read more I found MedicUp Consulting through various recommendations on the CaGuns reddit. Every single review had high praise and spoke to the level of professionalism that the instructors brought to the class. Now I get it! Ron, Juan, Randy, Victor and Matt made this an incredible weekend that I will always be grateful for. Before this class, there were alot of things I was unsure about in regards to carrying, legalities, and mindset. We live in an age where everyone on the internet can give an opinion or advice, no matter how bad or wrong it may be. After this weekend, I feel both confident and comfortable in my understanding now. You get REAL answers and advice from active and retired law enforcement officers. They dont bullshit you or try to sell you fluff. And man, they know how to have a good time and keep things fun. 16 hours flew by and left me wanting to come back just to hang with them again! No matter how simple or basic a question you may have, they never make you feel stupid, nor put you down, and they really take the time to address ANYTHING. I never felt like I was just a customer or paycheck. Truly felt like I was welcomed into the family. During the live portion and quals, there wasnt a SINGLE mishap nor moment where anyone felt or did anything unsafe. Not once! It just goes to show how on it they are, and how well they can articulate, teach, and enforce safety. I'm thankful for all of the skills and information I took away this weekend, but probably the best/most useful was practicing and applying tourniquets in the Stop The Bleed portion. With MedicUp, you get what you pay for and MORE. I can't wait to be back in 2 years for my renewals, but more than likely I'll see yall again sooner for either the lowlight or shotgun class. Thank you guys again for such a FUCKING AWESOME weekend!
