I go here first. 95% of the time, they have the part or whatever I'm looking for. If they don't have it, they'll order it, if I'm not in a hurry for it. If they don't have it and I need it now, I'll schlep over to Lowe's (Don't do HD or Menards). They're the friendliest, most helpful folks in the current hardware scene. You find yourself needing Benjamin Moore paint after Reineke closes and you find yourself here. Mind you my husband is a 20 year professional union painter. We know products. When asked if they carry BM ceiling paint, yellow can, they said yes. Ok, cool. We need it in... "Oh, that paint isn't tintable". We asked for the paint department, she was the paint department. Ok, I'm staring at a tinted can of this paint not to mention, we've been getting tinted versions of this paint for many years. She insisted it wasn't tintable. So apparently folks, the ceiling paint only comes in one white! It was so stupid I literally laughed at her. Maybe they'll get another seasonal color next year, grey, or purple. Who knows. Carmelita was extremely helpful when I called asking about a warranty repair on my Ego blower. Rather than just say, "We don't do that" or "Call Ego" she had several suggestions. Turns out, Ego had given me some bad information by telling me to bring it to Lowes where they provided no help. The answer is to bring Ego products, and others, for repair to Ready Repair on North Warson Road. More stores should have nice, caring people like Carmelita working for them! read more

Let me tell you why you should avoid this hardware store. I used to go to this store frequently as it was very close to my house. I went there one day to buy a new toilet supply line. I bought what I thought was the right hose, but it turned out to be the wrong size fitting. I brought it back within 30 minutes and the cashier at the counter even remembered the transaction. I told him that I wasn't sure what I had done with the receipt, but I just wanted to simply exchange it. They requested my drivers license. I asked them why I needed to give my drivers license when the cashier literally remembered me paying for this supply line minutes ago. The manager came forward and told me they were not going to do anything unless I provided my drivers license. I understand the concept of shoplifting, but the clerk literally remembered me as I had purchased the wrong size hose minutes earlier. As a matter of principle, I left to never return. I went to a different ace hardware store. also on Manchester Road in Des Peres. The assistance that the employees offer at the store in De Peres is 1000 times better than the one in Brentwood. The difference in ownership is obvious in the customer service. I will drive out of my way a mile or two to avoid the Brentwood Westlake Ace Hardware. The customer service is nonexistent. read more

Ace hardware is a hidden gem that I'm just discovering. I recently found two items there that were unavailable online or at the big box hardware stores. Ace seems to have the best brands at competitive prices and help finding things is always available. I can park within steps of the door and complete my purchases in the time it would take to walk from the parking lot at the big stores. Great independent hardware store, with exceptional customer service. We're always greeted when we enter and when inquiring about a particular item, a sales associate always takes us directly to the item. On my last visit, I got distracted by a display (I'm fun to shop with) and stopped following the associate. He came back to me with item in hand and closed the sale. The display also closed a sale, with the power of merchandising. For a hardware store, they've got some great plants and accessories for the yard and garden. This is not the friendly hometown store it appears to be. Better than the big boxes, yes. But don't be fooled that it's family owned and friendly. It is part of a 140 store chain. This store (Brentwood, MO) showed me one grill, wrote up the ticket at a higher price than promised and changed the price at the register for me when I caught the difference. I thought all was good until delivery. When delivered, I was given a lower cost grill that I had never seen, and didn't order when talking to store employees in front of the grill. The lower cost grill was not on the show room floor when I ordered my grill. It was basically a classic BAIT AND SWITCH. The General Manager of the store supports his employees who are doing a CYA saying that I ordered a grill I had never seen or even knew existed, yet they were right next to me when I touched and they wrote up the grill I wanted. Beyond horrible customer service. Go if you want, but I bet the big boxes would at least honor their sales and their mistakes. read more

This place is smaller than the big home improvement places, but they have almost everything you would need for general maintenance. And they really strive to get you to take advantage of rebates. Many times, I get items for little to no cost after I send in my rebate. And you can process those online. Later in the spring/summer, they have a decent selection of plants outside. read more

It had the kitchen storage bins that I was looking for. The place was organized and has lots of other things-you-didn't-know-you-needed. They cut new plexiglass to fit my storm down in my super old house perfectly. I am super impressed because my house has the typical "hobbit home" doors that are round at the top. It made my house look amazing!!!! I should have done it so long ago! And to add to it, it was only $25 service fee to have it cut perfectly and placed into the frame of my door! Unreal! read more

I know, I know... I'm reviewing a hardware store. But seriously, this place is awesome. Yes, it's literally 2 minutes from my house, but that's not what makes this place great. The people that work here are super nice. I've gotten pretty much everything from Christmas lights to peony plants at this Ace location, and they have been nothing but friendly and helpful during every one of my visits. I am always asked if I need help out to my car, and since I always seem to leave this place with absurdly large items, it's so nice to know that I won't have to try and lug 6 bags of cedar mulch into my car all by myself. Really disappointed. I love ace hardware and this particular store was really disheartening. Usually people are very helpful at ace, but I've been here several times and have never been approached by an employee, and have not been able to even find an employee to help. I usually come in for pretty specific items, so I'm in there for 25 minutes just to find out on my own that it's out of stock. Most of the plumbing supplies were out of stock, and I have yet to find anything I need here. Here's the deal, I love ace hardware. I am usually in and out of this place faster than any other hardware spot, even the Home Depot by me that I frequent the most. Why? Service. I come in. I say what I'm looking for. Can I just start out by saying the people here are total win? People and service: Super friendly and AWESOME! Prices: Decent Location: not bad Story 1 -- The Competence of Key Copying: I've been trying to get a copy of my keys for my roomie's bf. We went to home depot TWICE and they failed TWICE. So, when I was at ACE, I asked the key-guy to help me out. He very easily grabbed the RIGHT key and proceeded to copy them for me. No hassle, no issues. I was actually worried he grabbed the wrong key b/c home depot made me lose faith so much, but he showed me the letters and numbers on the back and said he was certain he had the right type. Total win indeed! Story 2: The Tale of Two Hoop-making Trips: My old roomie and I are into hooping and other types of performance exercise things. About 1.5 years (+/- 6 months) ago, we went to this ACE to buy tubing. The tubing that was needed for hoop making sold fairly cheaply here (100 yards for 25 bucks? AWESOME!). We also wanted to get some connectors. Unfortunately, we couldn't test the connectors out until we got home due to the way things were packaged. A few weeks later, we tested out the tubing and connectors and they didn't quite fit how we wanted them to. BOO! And then we got too busy to figure things out. I think we just chalked it off as a bad investment. Anyway, today I went back to try to get that investment to be a GOOD investment. I took the old connectors and asked if I could exchange them. The manager was super nice and super friendly and helped me out. WIN! He also spent a good 30 minutes helping me find an appropriate connector. When nothing was perfect, he gave me some ideas on what to do. TOTAL WIN! So thanks to the good people at ACE hardware, my current roomie's bf has a key to our place and my old roomie will be getting a hoop from me pretty soon that she can decorate on her own. Since we live in the heydays of warehouse, one-stop-shopping establishments I can understand why you must be thinking, "Ace what?" but let me assure you, Ace Hardware is a name worth knowing. I just recently bought a house and am coming to know the joys -and dreads- of homeownership first hand. And the fact of the matter is: stuff breaks. Or even more frequently- stuff was installed wrong when it was first put in! Hence the reason for this review of a home improvement store in the first place. The service here is spectacular. Employees practically hover around you, they greet you the moment they see you and immediately ask to help. Better yet, they're even knowledgeable about the store! Granted it's easier to keep track of 10 aisle instead of 50 (like some 'Home Lowe' stores), it nevertheless helps immensely to have the sales persons take the time to show you where to find exactly what you need when you don't even know what you're looking for- AND be cheerful about it! Another impressive feature of the store is the ability to buy individual items. Just need one screw? Or a single O-ring (aka 'gasket', aka 'rubber ring for pipes') ? You can buy that here! Before I knew better, I was spending $5 dollars a pop for a box of screws when I only needed 3! Had I known about Ace, I'd only be out a buck-o-five! They have a pretty good selection for a small store. True, they're not a warehouse store but unless you're a contractor building a house from scratch that won't matter much. And of course the price can't be beaten. I highly recommend Ace Hardware to any noob home-improvers needing single serve hardware, guidance and prices that won't scare the wallet off of you. read more

This place gets an easy 4 stars solely based on customer service. I'm a recent first time owner and I've found myself in more hardware and lawn care stores than I've ever been in before. I was in the market for a weed trimmer and I went into Ace looking to buy and battery operated trimmer. I was looking at a couple models and one of their associates asked me if I need any help. I asked if he knew on a full charge how long these batteries would last. He said "that's a good question, I'm not sure, but let's find out," and proceeded to cut open a brand new box to look for me. No answer to be found in the instruction manual, but still I appreciated the help. They are definitely not the cheapest, and they don't take competitor's coupons, which often deters me from buying there, but for smaller items and sometimes a good deal you can't beat ACE. read more

OK so I had to go to this specific store because they carried it so I was going to make a routine run in and out kind of trip, what I didn't expect was the friendly and helpful service I got, the clean store or the excellent signage directing you to the various aisles and departments. I walked in was directed to where I needed to go and I found the item I came for, made my way to the check out and even got into some light conversation with the nice employee ringing out my merchandise. i will most definitely be going back to this location, it may be a little further away from my home, but friendly helpful service is enough for anyone to drive that extra distance. read more

We're redecorating our kitchen We bought some drawer pulls here, but they didn't have enough in stock. They said they'd get another shipment in a few days. The following week we were close to a different Ace Hardware, and thought we'd pick up the rest of the pulls. Unfortunately they didn't have them in bulk, so we bought a hinge for a sample, and some screws instead. That didn't work out, so I came back to this store to return the hinge and screws, and pick up the rest of the handles. The cashier told me I couldn't return the hinge because it hadn't been purchased from HIS store. I'd have to go back to the other Ace to return it. Also, the screws were a bulk item, and couldn't be returned. I protested loud enough that he brought the manager on duty forward. The manager told me the reason I couldn't return the items was because each store is independently owned and I didn't buy from them. I was a bit incredulous they wouldn't accept Ace merchandise with a receipt. So the manager finally told the cashier to refund my money. I still needed the drawer pulls, so I went back to get them, but they still didn't have them all in stock. At that point I decided to skip it. I kept my shopping list in my pocket and headed for the door. They followed me out to the parking lot. What a surprise they were willing to offend and lose a customer over a $6 return. SIX DOLLARS! UPDATE: I forwarded this review to Ace Hardware HQ, and received the following email: "Good morning Dan, Thank you for contacting the Ace Care Center. The leg of our chair broke and I brought the chair with me to find out their advice. They took it several steps higher than just some empty advice. I live in Brentwood, and I missed our old Essen Hardware store dearly. Nothing can come close to Essen, but when Ace moved in I was ecstatic! You pay a little more, but their staff is always helpful, and when you're a regular they are a good chat. From paint for my old truck to a particular size of self tapping screws, they can find it. They also supply all of the name brand Traeger accessories, and that keeps me coming back every weekend to "browse." While they don't have everything, they are certainly my first stop! Cottons Ace that owns a number of stores in the area would not stand by their advertisement of a patio set that was on sale. The ad read $399,00 off a patio set that would have made the sale price of $200.00. I drove to the stove to buy one and was told the sale price was $399.00. That is the old bait and switch, they get you to the store and then try to up the price by $200.00. I would suggest anyone looking at advertised prices be aware that Ace Hardware does not stand behind what they advertise. I don't recommend shopping at Ace for anything on sale. read more

I love this place. Everytime I go, everyone is helpful and friendly. I am not one to ask where something is. I am the type to run around the store driving myself nuts looking for something. Every employee is ready to help you right from the get go. No one hounds you, but when you do need help and ask for it they are there to assist. I have even witnessed them deal with difficult customers. I was impressed with how they handle the situation. I would rather pay more and give my money to Ace than other well known places in the area just because the service is go great! read more

Pete was great!! I bought some plexiglass at Home Depot and they did not have a machine to cut it for me. Not a big deal, they said that it would be easy with the glass cutter they had me buy. I'm not an idiot, I scored it multiple times. NOT EASY. Broke it 5 times without a clean cut. Got frustrated, looked up somewhere to get it cut. Spoke with Pete and he said to just come in and he would cut it for free(it was a few small pieces, probably not always free). My frustration is lifted. Thank you so much! read more
