My doorknob suddenly died today, and I went to my local hardware store to buy a replacement. The store told me that they no longer rekey new doorknobs, so I'd have to seek out a local locksmith. Total disappointment with Western locksmith! I had old metal door handle which did not open the door smoothly. I called several locksmiths, which offered ~200$ to replace new one. Andy from Western Locksmith also responded and promised to fix it without replacement. He spent 40mins and did some minor adjustment, then charged me $200! Forget the gentleman's name now. One day my doorknob breaks and I can't get into walk-in closet. I literally spent 8 hours trying to open the door with breaking it. After the 1st day I was ready to break it open but wanted to get a professional opinion. The gentleman told me I did everything correctly and that next step would be to break the internal mechanism drilling into the metal. If he were to come out, he'd have to charge quite a bit so he encouraged me to go at it and gave me a couple of pointers. After another 3~4 hours of drilling out the screws...didn't have the right drill but which took longer...I was able to break the old know and get into my closet. Holy Molly. What can I say? I needed a Volkswagen GTI key cut. I talked to three other locksmiths to obtain services. All three blew me off. I waited 2 1/2 hours for one guy. I even called Capitol WV and they couldn't help me. Called Western Locksmith and spoke to the owner Andy. He is a great guy. He had me meet him at his new shop in Sunnyvale. I am appreciative of the quick service but I am still a bit stocker shocked from the price quoted. Andy is a fantastic person ! I lost the key to my room door, did not have a spare, so I planned to rekey the Schlage lock. The rekey kit that I bought did not have much info on how to do it, YouTube provided some, but I was not sure that I had all the tools and knowledge to do it. He went over all the steps to do it, specified the "watch-out-for-this" tidbits, and even referred me to a nearby locksmith in case I ran into difficulties (Andy is on the road most of the time). I bought (3) separate boxed Schlage locks from Home Depot which according to the box were all keyed identically. Low and behold, 2 of the locks were keyed the same, the 3rd lock was keyed differently even though the box showed it was correct, and the packaging had not been tampered with prior to me buying the items. Since I want all of my locks to be keyed the same I called Western Locksmith. Andy answered the phone, and was very warm and welcoming. I'm just re-reading my review from 2013....the first time I met Andy. Six years later....I am still calling Andy for all of my door lock needs! Andy and his son, John, are wonderful....polite, professional, efficient, thoughtful, knowledgeable and highly skilled. In the last six years, I've locked myself out five times. When Andy is available, he is able to help me get in quicker than any of the other locksmiths (we have a very old and durable Schlage). It takes Andy about 5-10mins. Several of the other locksmiths took up to 1hr to get my door open and one even said he will need to break open the door soon. During my last (recent) lock out, luckily, I was able to reach Andy. After he opened my door, he helped me think of creative ways to change my behavior. We came up with a solution that worked! (I have a front door that automatically pulls shut. Andy suggested that I leave the bottom lock unlocked and use my key to lock the deadbolt. Genius!). Unfortunately, this solution of always using a key drove my husband nuts. My husband has been asking for a smart lock for years and I've always refused. This time, I talked to Andy about the different options, learned about the pros and cons of each smart lock, and we (my husband and I) called Andy back to install a smart lock. Without prompting, Andy also offered to make me copies of the key for my new lock. I also want to add Andy fixed our two bedroom doors. They were not closing after our bedrooms were re-carpeted over six months ago (the doors were getting stuck because the new carpet was thicker than the old carpet). It's so nice to have bedroom doors that close again. With Andy's creative problem solving, patience to educate me, I wonder if he's trying to work himself out of a job. He is my go-to locksmith. I urgently needed to rekey my door, called Andy around 9:30pm and he was able to re-key my front door and make extra keys within an hour of calling him. He charges a very reasonable price, friendly, professional and got it done quick! He also advised on a keyless bluetooth lock for my iPhone and I would definitely hire him to do the job once I'm ready. If it's not installed correctly, the tiny motor could stop working, which is actually what happened to my Kevo, plus Kevo is a piece of crap too.
