First time walking in, and the food was good. However there was a gentleman there and his service was not friendly. I wanted to add a hash brown to my order, and his response was "well uhm, they are very hot so are you sure" Also, his colleague asked him , "for a frozen Espresso how do I?" And before she could finish her sentence, he sent her away. Saying he did not know how to make it and the other person did. Decent place overall. Plenty of seating inside and it kind of give large deli vibes inside. The server was helpful when we were trying to decide what sandwich to get. The coffee wasn't anything amazing but it wasn't watered down like a lot of other places I've been to. I liked my breakfast sandwich but my bagel was more on the burnt side. My partner enjoyed his sandwich, which I'm glad to hear. My experience was the opposite. My order, the pastrami sandwich, had ice cold meat when it should have been warm. The person making it forgot the cheese despite confirming twice it had cheese before I placed the order. Unlike my partner's sandwich, it wasn't even cut in half. Thankfully one of the other workers remade it correctly, but the pastrami was still disappointing. Was prepared more like brisket flavor wise, and I did not want a brisket sandwich at 10:00 am. Honestly would have just taken a refund over the remake, but I still appreciate the effort to make it better. This is the second time I've given this place a chance, and probably the last. My friends and partners still like it, so if we come out here for a bite to eat, I'll go to one of the other places next door. read more

Wow, super disappointed the service has gone downhill at this location. We used to come here as a family, knew all of the employees and everyone was so kind. Today we were greeted by a new guy who was extremely unkind in telling us. We can't have our dog in there. He was rude and menacing and threatened to get the manager even though we had just said we had been in there for years. Just really disappointed in the delivery of this apparent new rule, which literally prevents people from coming in and ordering if they have a dog? (to be clear, they have put a new sign on the door that says only service dogs, no pets, it was strictly in the delivery of this information to a customer.) Really bummed because we used to love this place and still love the bagels and coffee, the atmosphere and overall attitude has just completely changed, and I can no longer go grab breakfast while I'm on my walk with my dog. read more

"The bagel that won the West," is their proud motto. The use of past tense is unfortunate, but fitting. For decades, LA was a barren bagel wasteland. Transplants from New York and Montreal would insufferably remind us of how amazing their bagels were. For those born and raised in LA, we might have known they were right, but in our hearts, Western Bagel was ours and it was good. In the last few years though, LA has developed a new generation of bagel culture...mixing new baking techniques and some from the old world. Western Bagel was a rejection of the crappy supermarket bagels that were readily available. Nowadays the in store product and the retail versions don't seem that different. Occasionally, I will still stop by because I love their egg bagels. The yellow dough, the chew, the glossy browned skin with a hint of cornmeal on the toasted bottoms. To walk in on a weekend morning and see a freshly baked basket of them was a treat. All you had to do was split one open and schmear that whipped cream cheese on top. No toasting necessary. Nowadays, the bagels still look the same, but the quality isn't. I don't know if it's because they've lost a step or it's because I've expanded my bagel palate. That freshly baked chew has turned into a spongey bread...it's more bun than bagel. There are times when I prefer the simplicity and cheaper cost of the bag you can get at the supermarket. The cream cheese was second to none...fresher than any block or tub you'd find in a supermarket, but in the last few times I've gotten something other than the lox spread, the cream cheese was grainy and tasted more like bleu cheese than cream cheese. Even the lox spread has taken a dip in quality...tasting more lox flavored than having actually bits of it in there. If there is one positive to note it's that the coffee here is amazing. If you just want simple drip coffee, the vanilla nut blend, when they have it, is my go to. The self serve counter is a great idea because sometimes, the line can get pretty long and the service very slow. I will say though I've never had a poor experience from any of the people working behind the counter in all the years I've come to this location, but the enthusiasm and care varies. There's been times where it's great and other times when it's not. I guess that's on par for any business, but between the dip in quality, the rise in cost, and the potential slow service, it's a shame how far Western Bagel has fallen. It's still cromulent for those Monday morning meetings or something to snack on at craft services, but there's a new battle for the best bagel in the West and I don't think Western Bagel is part of that competition anymore. read more

Bagels are generally pretty good, but the customer service is terrible! They're probably the best bagel spot in Studio City/Sherman Oaks, but please do something about the service. This should be a great place for breakfast, but it just falls short. For starters, the staff should be trained on how to welcome/greet people as they come. A simple Hi or good morning would be better than the general disdain they give you for wanting a bagel. I don't want to feel bad for asking them to do their job, but that's the vibe you get. And I know it gets busy, but the tables and floors should be routinely cleaned. This shouldn't fall on the customers to wipe the table if they want somewhere clean to eat. If this place gets a little Customer Service 101, it's easily 5 stars. Until then, just 3 from me and that's for the bagels and ease of parking. read more

Wow, $5.50 for a bagel and cream cheese. That's at least 25% more than other bagel shops. I personally don't like Western Bagels as much as I do Einstein and Noah. But this was the closest one to me today. I don't usually get the bagel toasted if it is fresh. I asked if it was but after eating it, I don't believe it was fresh from today. Given that it was kind of cold, I'm pretty sure it was from yesterday at best. I'd rather donate my money to better bagel shops that have more reasonable prices. read more

My wife and I come here often. This morning we encountered two employees that were flat out rude. We were happy and in a good mood walking in. We walked out like we had just left the twilight zone. I get it, it's early in the morning and a Saturday. They are young and don't want to be there. That I get. But the bottom line is you avoid conflict with your customers. We were not looking for one but they sure gave it to us. We walked out wondering what the heck just happened. I don't think I have ever given a 1 star review, but these two employees earned it. Today was a horrible day once again I am reminded how my disability is always pointed out by people. I have a young service dog and one of your workers as soon as I walk in says pets are not allowed. My service animal is certified because of my disability, the situation how he approaches it was very demeaning. To make matters worse, he enticed another patron to question my disability. I was put through humiliation that I had to justify why I have a service animal. I call on management to retrain your whole staff regarding this matter. I also need to know the gentleman that gave me a smirk and even though I had asked to eat dine in wrapped our food to go.I was to embarrassed to justify and stand up for my self that I left. The bagel was so fresh tasting! This is my first bagel experience in LA and I'm open to other iconic bagel places in Los Angeles as I continue my bagel journey.. I had an open face toasted sesame lox and cream cheese simple and perfect! Eat right away if you take it to go so it doesn't get soggy! Only downside is there is only regular milk and low fat milk no alternative milks for the nondairy people . I splurged for the cream cheese but a dairy latte would have murdered me after. Nate got a toasted cinnamon raisin with cream cheese and throughly enjoyed it as well. Such sweet staff too! All and all great experience read more

As far as my review of these bagels go, they're round and have holes in their centers. Other than that, I could not figure out why this place gets 4 stars. It was busy, so I have to assume it's the only show in town and the locals have no other choice. Missing bagels would not sway me to leave a 1 star review. What sways me is the lack of customer service I received from Sylvia. Hopefully speaking to Manager Brian tomorrow will produce a better conversation. I called to share that I was missing bagels from my Sunday order. We ordered thru the western bagel app, and upon pick up we only received 19 of 30 bagels. We did not realize any were missing until getting home. The bagels were for my gender reveal and ultimately, I did not have enough bagels for my guests. Speaking to employee Sylvia today I initially said 6 were missing and then my husband reminded it was 11. I updated her and she said "are you sure?" I said yes. She went on to say "ma'am that is highly unlikely that you were missing that many bagels." She said twice it was "highly unlikely". Her resolution was for me to come in and pick up the remaining amount. 1st of all, the event is over. This is not an acceptable resolution. The store closes at 2pm. I cannot leave work to drive to Burbank and pick up bagels I no longer need. I asked for a refund for the missing bagels and she says she's not the supervisor she's only covering for him right now and they cannot do a refund without us being there in person. Something about corporate involvement. She asked me if I wanted her to write a letter to Brian so that he could help us when he comes in. I said I will call him back tomorrow. Being told a mistake was "highly unlikely" was so rude and I can't fathom feeling comfortable to order from this store again. We deserve to be reimbursed at minimum for the 11 missing bagels. It's also noteworthy that when we picked up the bagels initially, we asked twice if all of the bagels were there, and the woman that replied was very rude about it. It didn't seem like the bulk matched the count of 30 which was the reason we initially asked. read more

Bagel and butter, so easy right? Just buy a six pack of them at Costco and heat one up in the morning, spread some butter on it. Epic fail. For a cheat meal treat, there's nothing like a fresh bagel, run through that conveyor belt toaster thing, then having fresh butter put on top. At home, the butter is always too hard to spread, or not sweet enough, or something. The bagel gets stuck in the toaster and burns. Yelp Life Hack: Western Bagel. Located in a getting-better-and-better shopping center (California Fish Grill, the new Urbane Cafe, a Smart and Final extra with a sushi chef inside), Western Bagel is a hit. Not sure if they actually make the bagels at this location, but they taste very doughy and fresh, and the toasting with butter is a nice treat. Beware if your favorite, like me, is the Salt bagel. Gulp, 1120 mg of sodium, that is a week's supply. Double up on the statin, then enjoy. One more thing! Do not sleep on the Western Bagel cookie selection -- they are awesome. Sold by the pound, there are five or six varieties that taste so fresh, it's a shame they are overlooked by the bagel-eating crowd. They are poorly displayed to the left of all the bagels. For a chain, this spot really felt like a mom and pop shop. I placed an online order of half a dozen bagels and a small garlic and herb spread. It was a good thing I did, because there was a pretty long line when I arrived. I ordered the everything cheese, everything cheese jalapeño, everything, sourdough, cinnamon raisin, and blueberry. The bagels are good, better than decent. Not a fan of how soft their crust is, but they've got a nice chew to them. If you've had Hank's (which is in the area), they are on the smaller side. To me, this is a good thing because I don't like my bagels to be too doughy or dense. My favorites were the everything bagel and blueberry, and my least favorite was the sourdough. The garlic spread complemented the savory bagels well, but had a stronger flavor than I expected. My only issue with this place was the service when I came to pick up. The employees didn't look all that happy to be there, and if you need their help, you'd have to really try to get their attention yourself or else you can expect to wait forever. Since I couldn't see a designated pickup spot, I stood in front of one of the cash registers for a good 15 min to ask about my order, and the lady in front of it ignored me the whole time even though we made eye contact LOL. I ended up pacing around the counter until I finally got another employee's attention. I'd say that Western is one of the better places in Burbank to get bagels, but not great overall. It's worth a try if you live close by, but if you're looking for excellent bagels, there are plenty places out of town that are way better. read more

I'm done coming here. I've come for years, and it's just more and more unpleasant every time. The lines are confusing, no one knows where to stand, and everyone gets irritated. When you call and make an order, they hang up on you without saying goodbye. And the quality of your bagel (whether it's fully toasted, cut, even fully wrapped) depends entirely on whether the person you get decides to take the time/attention to prepare it properly. I haven't left there feeling happy in months, and we go at least once a week. Bagel Boss down the street is more expensive, but at least it's a pleasant experience with a consistent product. read more

My go to bagel spot when I worked at the Disney Burbank lot! Apparently my old boss, who grew up in the area, knew the workers and would get bagels all the time. They've been a little understaffed given the demand for bagels, but I don't blame the staff. They're looking for people but I wish some customers would stop giving the staff such a hard time with orders. Quality has been as good as I remember, whether it be the bagels, the cheese, the sandwiches, etc. They're also so popular that many of the bagels are sold out by the afternoon.
