Thought I just got something stuck in my cap. Nope I had a fracture in the root. So har to have my tooth pulled. This was part of a bridge so she had to cut the bridge and pull the molar. I put some headphones on and she was very gentle ( yeah I know still getting a tooth pulled) with it but before I knew it we were done. I got a few more things I need to go back and get done but I feel like I'm not getting taken advantage of.

I am sharing my story to inform others that they can find better oral care elsewhere. In mid-June, I went for my first check up and cleaning at Glendale Modern Dentistry. Upon arrival, I learned that required, pre-appointment forms had not been emailed. As a result, I would have to complete them before my appointment. No tablet computer was provided, so I was left to fill out the forms on my personal cell phone. The task was made more difficult due to a lack of internet service in the office. I was told to connect to Dunkin' Donuts WiFi, which again had a poor signal. Eventually, I stood outside in the 100+ degree heat to complete the series of forms. Next, an extensive set of X-rays and photographs taken. Then I was escorted to an exam room where the hygienist hurriedly performed periodontal charting. I attempted to explain that I was very anxious, and usually the hygienist numbs my mouth to avoid discomfort that occurs during my cleaning. The hygienist seemed to lack empathy, and told me that she would prefer to try doing the cleaning without a local anesthetic first. Next the dentist reviewed the X-rays with me, indicating that I have no cavities. When the time finally came for my cleaning, the hygienist refused to perform the service unless I agreed to the following additional procedures: - Scaling and Root Planing -Adjunctive Pre-Diagnostic Test that aids in detection of mucosal abnormalities -Fluoride Varnish -A laser treatment (which she eventually admitted was unnecessary) Again I explained that I was very anxious, and that for this first visit I simply wanted a local anesthetic with a standard teeth cleaning. It was important that I gain confidence and establish trust in the hygienist's quality of care. The hygienist repeatedly refused to do a basic teeth cleaning unless I agreed to the additional procedures, so I eventually left the office without my 6-month cleaning. Of course now my insurance has now been charged approximately $1700 for the X-rays and exam, and I am left without the routine cleaning for which the appointment was intended. At the same time, my young-adult son was being seen in another exam room. This a young man who takes good care of his teeth and has had routine dental appointments every 6 months his entire life. His experience resulted in an out-of-pocket charge of $85 for an unneeded deep cleaning. The hygienist also recommended he get a laser treatment, but eventually said that it could be done at a follow up visit instead. Glendale Modern Dentistry is not interested in quality health care. They seem to be much more focused on up-charging people for unnecessary services. Save yourself the inconvenience and expense by going elsewhere!

My last cleaning and exam was 9 months ago and they did bite-wing X-rays. The first thing I was told by the hygienist, was that they needed to give me full mouth X-rays. I said I didn't want to do that if my insurance didn't cover it and I really don't want to be exposed to X-rays unnecessarily. Dr. Tobon was obviously either being flagged down by the hygienist or was listening and came in to discuss it. Upon entering the room, he introduced himself and began by saying, "this is my dental practice. I bought it and I own it now and I understand you have some questions." I explained my concerns and then, in a condescending tone and speaking to me like Mr. Rogers does to a child, said that he likes to take X-rays every 6 months. He started telling me stories of how they could miss a cavity and tried to relate stories of the past where people suffered mightily by not having cavities detected. I explained that I haven't had a cavity in 25 years and I would agree to the X-rays if my insurance covered it but I didn't want to do them more than once per year. I further explained that I was being treated for skin cancer and although it's not related, more X-rays instead of less X-rays was not something I wanted. He then went into a long diatribe about how he cares about his patients and was a veteran and other irrelevant information that was supposed to have me let him do whatever he wanted because he is a good guy. He said things like, "I am the professional here." and "We need to have a trust with each other and allow me to do the things I deem necessary because I care about my patients." Further, he was saying if insurance wouldn't cover it, that he would "work with me", as if he wanted me to be put on a payment plan or something to pay for non-covered procedures. Without knowing my situation, background or circumstances, the implication was that I couldn't afford to pay and not that it might be a principle issue of doing no more than what my insurance plan covers or a genuine concern of X-ray exposure. Honestly, he came across as a used car salesman who was trying to get me to succumb to his pushy tactics by making it some melodramatic "trust" issue while basically talking down to me because he is a dentist. (I guess he doesn't get that some people might have more advanced degrees than him) He said "If you think there might be a trust issue between us, maybe you should consider another dentist." Tired of trying to simply get my cleaning, exam, bite wings and the discussion of my crown done, I got up and left. My impression is that he tries to scare people to into procedures and has no understanding of empathy because he is a business owner more than he is a medical professional (as shown by the way he introduced himself).

Dr. Stanfield is a nice, caring Dr. that does good work & he has always taken care of my teeth & done right by me. I have gone to him for many years. He was not there the day this happened. It was my fault for not saying anything to the tech about the X-rays at the time. So I am at fault for not bringing the x-rays to the attention of the dental tech there at the time. I have been through several cleaning and maintenance appointments and I start ortho in January. So we have received a good amount of services from them and attended many appointments with them. Everyone is always awesome! The front desk is always friendly and knowledgeable. They are always very on top of paper work and billing procedures. A human answers the phone every time I've ever called (during business hours)!! It amazing. This office gives me the feeling of dentists offices from the past where we weren't patient number blah blah blah.. They've always treated Brian and myself like family and give us the feeling they really care. They know our names and although we typically visit separately because of our schedules, everyone asks "how's Brian?" or "how was the wedding?" Signaling that they've taken the time to remember things about their patients and care about our lives outside of just billing our insurance. This is especially evident in long time employees like Nedra. This woman is amazing. She has a firm but loving way of letting you know what to focus on while not making you feel judged or put down. She relates with empathy while pushing for better from you in regard to your oral hygiene. I so enjoy going here and am very much looking forward to partnering with them on my ortho journey!!
