I was initially impressed by Dr. Rao's genial chairside manner and accepted the somewhat seedy location and thrift store decor as a sign of a "discount" pricing policy. The price was actually average but the dental work and followup were extremely problematic. The following is my email regarding the problems following my temporary crowns. I later discovered the website email address was not operational. Message to Dr. Rao, I left a message this morning (Saturday October 21) regarding my discomfort and problem with my temporary crowns. I assumed you would have an emergency number to reach you even though your office is closed. (It's very unusual for a medical/dental professional to have no after hours contact information). I had my temporary crowns done on October 11 and paid for them and the permanent crowns in advance as you requested. This has not been my usual payment experience. I returned on October 18 to have the temporary crowns smoothed as my tongue was irritated and had developed ulcers from the rough texture. Your assistant did most of the work. I started to explain to you how my bite was now off and my mouth felt out of alignment. You didn't appear to be concerned and no effort was made to rectify this situation. Observing my bite, it's apparent that the temporary crowns on the lower right side are higher, wider and unevenly matched to the bottom teeth on the left side. I have researched and discovered that temporary crowns should be adjusted so that the patient's bite is comfortable or if necessary, redone. I haven't been able to eat solid food for the past 10 days and my tongue is still irritated by the rough texture of the crowns. I'm very concerned that my permanent crowns will also be a poor fit. I need to have the temporary crowns adjusted to be the same height and similar width as the teeth on the other side of my mouth so that I am able to chew comfortably. I am unable to chew properly on the left side since I am missing a top tooth. My permanent crowns appointment isn't till November 8. I would appreciate having this dental problem corrected as soon as possible. Dr. Rao responded on Monday to the phone message I left on Saturday concerning my distress. He was apologetic and had me return again for another adjustment. He works on several patients at the same time and at one point needed to be reminded what we were working on. The permanent crowns were finally applied and the numbing needle was incredibly painful. My lips were horribly swollen for days as the extreme numbing lasted for hours and made me unaware that I was chewing on my lips, when eating. Finally the crowns were done and I was able to chew comfortably. The next problem was reimbursement from my Medicare insurance. Dr. Rao had said initially that as a courtesy he would fill out the paperwork. He sent a pre-approval but neglected to follow up with a completed and signed itemized bill. It's been almost 3 months and after hours of conversations with United Healthcare, I received a statement showing a $1000 reimbursement allowed. The paperwork included a signature required by the dentist and his filling out a form. I emailed the paperwork to his office and I spoke with his office representative Anna, who advised me not to pursue the payment because that would delay my getting reimbursement (?) She advised me to wait a few more weeks and said Dr. Rao was informed about this situation. I've had a lot of dental work done by different dentists over the years but this has been an unusually frustrating experience. read more

The best experience Ive had with any dentist! Dr. Tony was great! He was very personable and enthusiastic. Above everything he was truly honest and trustworthy. I went in to get to dental clearance for the military and unlike many other dentist that see it as an opportunity to take advantage to get a lot of unnecessary work done to make a large profit, he was more than happy to truly follow what the document requested him to do. I tried calling for a simple extraction and was met by the rudest, nastiest young lady I believe I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. She was extremely blunt and making sure I understand what THEIR charges are etc and never once asking me what was needed. Did I get an awful message service or something. NO BUSINESS WOULD EVER SPEAK TO POTENTIAL PATIENTS LIKE THAT! Tried calling back, not wanting to judge a dentist on a bad answering service. Was met with the same young lady and i ASKED if I had reached an answering service. She told me no, she was in the office. I visited Tony the doc today because I thought i needed a tooth removed. Xray and exam were $65. From there we could see that it was a different tooth that was causing some problems. I was only there because I have a trip coming up and didn't want my tooth to act up while I was away. Tony was so honest and upfront about my options and didn't rush me to make any decisions. I never felt pressured to spend money and always felt like he was being honest about how to approach my dental care. I have never had such a casual comfortable conversation with a dentist. I almost always end up crying my eye balls out at the dentist because of money and guilt. Zero of this here. On Monday, yesterday I had the most pleasant experience I've ever encountered in my Dental Health life. Not sure how this place could've earned a one star, however led me to detail my visit. To it sum up my trip. I went in for a cleaning as a new patient about a month ago, it was on special including X-Rays & the price was a steal. During the cleaning Dr. Rao unfortunately uncovered two fillings (guaranteed from red vines before falling asleep). So anyway, I scheduled to fill them a week later. When I eventually made it to an appointment and the total cost with tax no insurance was $350. My girlfriend also had a cleaning but deep by quadrant so she had way more work done even a crown but shared also shared great experience from Discount Dental. When the second appointment came we both also had deeper decay or sensitivity than expected & required more numbing in which each of our separate Drs did without question or additional cost. The male Dr. Rao was SO SO friendly guys. & The no pressure vibe financially to peruse you to quickly book all needed work (knowing no insurance), and finally the & no attitude from reception when I rescheduled both of our appointments TWICE because of losing my job after the initial cleaning. I swear I have no affiliation with these kind people, but was forced to write a lengthy review which I avoid doing to the viewers because my lack of writing confidence but HAD TO. The price is right. I'm writing this literally ten minutes after my emergency walk-in visit here. The stellar reviews on Yelp convinced me to come here and I regret that decision greatly at this point. A little background: I started having severe pain on the left side of my mouth about a month ago. I went to a low cost dental practice (Smile Today on Shea Blvd) to get a first opinion on what was causing the pain. They charged me $25 for an exam and panoramic X-ray and advised that I had a bad wisdom tooth. They quoted me a fair price for an extraction and offered to do it in the office. I came to discount dental today to get a second opinion and did not mention my previous diagnosis. The dental assistant broke the news to me that the exact same X-ray I paid $25 for at Smile Today was going to cost $115 here at "DISCOUNT Dental". WTF?!? DISCOUNT is in the name but clearly not relevant to the services they offer. As someone who was desperate and in pain, I went ahead and shelled that out only to be given the same diagnosis by Dr. Rao (bad wisdom tooth). BUT instead of offering to extract it, like the dentist at Smile Today, he referred me to an oral surgeon because he lacks confidence in his own ability to extract the tooth since it's so far back into my mouth. He told me he "didn't want to take the risk" of not being able to get the entire tooth out. So, to summarize I paid more than 4x the cost of the last X-Ray by what appears to be a less competent dentist who can't even resolve my issue. I would NOT recommend this practice to anyone and I will shout from the rooftops to everyone I know about how unhappy I am to have been price gouged on an X-ray. read more

Okay I feel so bad because all the reviews are about Tony Rao, but his wife is actually the star of the show. She is such a talented dentist! I had to get 2 crowns. During the process, she explained every step and answered all my questions. At one visit I complained to her that literally every other dentist I have ever worked with, not one has ever shaped my teeth to where they perfectly lined up. You know, they ask you to chomp down on the blue paper about a million times and then say, "well go home, if it still feels weird after the numbness goes away- come back and we'll fix it..." Ya, right. Who ever goes back willingly to get work done on a tooth they already had worked on? Well Dr. Rao told me she gets it done the first time. And she was absolutely right! My incisor's crown felt exactly like my natural tooth it was perfect as soon as she installed it. My molar- she had to work a little, but she got it there too. She is amazing. Pretty funny too. She seems like a cool lady to have as a friend. That's what it felt like when I went to my last visit. Like I was visiting a friend. I would definitely recommend Discount Dental. read more

It's too bad a lot of people gave Discount Dental awesome reviews but didn't click the stars. My review is how Dr. Tony treated my 87 year old mom and extracting her teeth for full dentures. She had extreme anxiety going in and needed 9 teeth removed. One of which was infected and two were broken. They adhered to all COVID CDC guidelines so I waited for her in the waiting room masked. I could hear him gently walking her through the entire procedure. He even came out to reassure me. In less that 45 min he was done. I have my 1st visit 1/4/21, so will post my own review. read more

Dr Rao is AMAZING. Came here because I had quite a few fillings (pregnancy gingivitis) and my outdoors dentist had quoted me over 1k, WITH insurance. His prices can't be beat; they're comparable to the dentist schools that take 4+ hours every appointment. I ended up needing a root canal and my insurance said I was maxed when I needed the crown. Dr Rao wrote a letter to my insurance company asking them to cover it to avoid more costly procedures down the road, and it worked! He saved me over $350! In my 35 years, I've lived in 3 different states & seen MANY dentists (I've always had teeth issues so I've had my fair share of dental procedures.). This is by far the best dental office I have ever been to. Very clean, friendly and FAST! I had two fillings done in 25 min! The doctor did such a great job and he's SO kind and friendly. Dr. Anthony Rao was the most down to earth compasionate medical professional I have seen. I went to him for a monor chipped front tooth which was unable to be filled successfully. When other denisted would offer veneers, which would require a great expense plus filling down my original tooth to place a fake one on top, he offered to shave them down just enough to make it unnoticeable. They provide realistic treatment plans including worse/best case scenarios, and treatment options if on a budget. I was always fearful of dentists before I came to this place. Best Dentist I have ever known. Dr Rao is the best not only in Arizona but the best in the US for bedside manner and honesty. If you don't have dental insurance, or even if you do... CHECK HIM OUT. I walked in and he was able to see me almost immediately, even without an appointment (although I would recommend scheduling if possible.) I had severe pain on my left side and got x-rays, and he wrote me scripts for antibiotics and pain meds. All for 65 dollars. I then was able to get an appointment today (Friday, the 29th of May) and had both of my upper wisdom teeth pulled. Non impacted, however both with severe decay. I was severely concerned as this was the first time ever getting my teeth pulled and we were only doing it with Local Anesthetic. Again I would like to mention he has the BEST bedside manner I have ever seen. He gave me only 4 shots at first to numb me up before giving the rest of them to make it less painful for the shots since I am hypersensitive to pain. He also had a cup of juice there to wash out the taste of the anesthetic. Performed both of the removals in about 15 minutes (most of the time waiting for the numbing.) He also checked in with my partner who was in the waiting room and let them know how I was doing as she was concerned (top notch bedside manner again) He then wrote me another script for some stronger meds and then I went to the counter. I was very concerned with how much it might be and it turned out... 2 simple extractions only: $196 I was simply blown away. I walked away with a smile, a numb mouth and about 10 of his business cards to give out. This is the dentist you want!!! read more

I get cleanings every 6 months & visited a new dentist in the North Scottsdale Grayhawk area for a routine cleaning & was told I needed $1,200 in fillings. I went to my Dad's dentist, Dr. Rao for a 2nd opinion. Dr. Rao assured me that I didn't need a single filling and that my teeth were in perfect condition and just to continue with my cleanings every 6 months. I am so glad I went to Discount Dental for the 2nd opinion and couldn't believe another dentist tried to scam me. That must be how they have to pay for their fancy dental office. So it's been about 4 years since I first visited Discount Dental and happy to say that I still go to Dr. Rao for my routine cleanings and NO fillings yet! My Mom also goes to Dr. Rao now and is almost finished with her Invisalign to correct a few crooked teeth. Her teeth are looking great and straight! My sister recommended Dr. Rao to me after I told her I'd maxed out my insurance benefits following the advice of another dentist, which had only resulted in constant problems and pain in one of my molars. I called his office to make an appointment to get the tooth extracted and they were able to get me in that same day. Priscilla, who I spoke to on the phone, was so wonderful and understanding. She basically had to talk me off a ledge because I was terrified at just the IDEA of having a tooth pulled. I can't even watch scenes in movies where someone has a tooth pulled out! When I arrived for my appointment, she remembered me from our phone conversation and went out of her way to reassure me and put me at ease. The same was true of Dr. Rao and the dental assistant (whose name I unfortunately don't remember because I was too busy being a big baby about everything.) Dr. Rao took the time to find out what my situation was, to make sure I was as comfortable as possible, and to explain everything that was happening. For all the fear and anxiety I had going in, I STILL can't believe how smooth and pain-free the extraction was. I closed my eyes and when Dr. Rao said the tooth was out I didn't believe him! Because I didn't feel it come out and I thought there was no way it could all be over that quickly. Dr. Rao is the Tooth Whisperer! Not only that, but he's honest and his prices are more than fair. I can't recommend him enough, especially if you're in a situation where you feel like a previous dentist may be pressuring you into expensive, possibly unnecessary procedures without even making the time to really listen and figure out what's best for you.
