Went there today after being referred to them because my daughter needs glasses. Checking in was very simple. The woman at the front window made the process very easy for looking up my insurance. She was really nice and pleasant. She told my daughter to look around and someone would be over to help us. Very shortly, Ashley ( not sure of the spelling) came over to help. I can't say enough nice things about her. She was really sweet and VERY helpful. She helped my daughter pick out a pair of glasses that she liked and was really patient. Absolutely first-rate professional service and quality. I've got a lot going on with progressive bifocals and a prism correction and astigmatism, so the lenses and fitting need to be precise for proper focus for reading, distance, and watching TV and computer screen. The customer service alone will keep me as a returning customer. There is absolutely no pressure and no obligation in the shopping experience. The associates will keep it real with you when it comes to the shape of your frames in comparison to the shape of your face. Some people will just tell you what you want to hear so that they can get a sell-- not this place. They have quality information that is valuable when purchasing eye glasses. I originally came in to purchase trendy, thick, black framed glasses, which were over $300. The person helping me told me that they were too big for my face and said that I wouldn't be happy with them in the long run. Instead she showed me frames that complimented by face and they were not as pricey as the ones I had originally sought out.She also recommended that I should pay attention to the shape of my eyes. Because i have almond shaped eyes, a particular frame would be better for me. I really appreciated this honesty, especially since I was making an expensive purchase. Over all, the people here know what they're talking about and will help help any individual figure out what frames are best for them. 5 stars for Dr. Sanders BUT they wanted to charge me nearly $400 for my initial visit! I needed to update my contacts/glasses prescriptions. I paid $180 for all the usual tests and my exam with Dr. Sanders. (This all took about 90min.) Then Dr. Sanders wanted to do a lense fitting, But he did not have my prescription in stock - so I'd need to come back for an extra appointment. Ok, I'm already needing to carve out time for a second appointment (because they were not stocked) - AND when I go to schedule that the woman at the desk tells me it will be an *additional* $170! (This was just for the fitting - no actual contacts purchased - Keep in mind I've been wearing contact lenses for 20 years so I'm already happy with the way my contacts fit) I checked with a number of friends who wear both glasses and contacts and they all think this is very strange. (Usually all of this happens in one appointment and certainly does not cost this amount of money!) *I have never been asked to pay this much money just to get a prescription update* I double checked with the receptionist because I was sure there was some mistake. -- She Was snooty and said, "well that's just how we do it." So watch out for the hidden fees at this place, because they are huge. read more

Probably the most comprehensive eye exam I've ever had -- it felt like an anatomy lesson and personal health check all in one! I really appreciated how the doc explained all the tests and why they're important, along with walking through my results with me and giving me some tips on what to look out for down the road (which I hope is a long one). The eye exams took about an hour, and in the end I didn't need a prescription. But if I did, they have a huge assortment of glasses to choose from. Really nice clean office and friendly folks. My first time at this location, I had a great overall experience. The staff was nice and the doctor was great.

I called last Tuesday to be seen as a new patient for an initial consultation/exam. The receptionist was able to give me an appointment for the following Friday. She asked for my insurance information and was able to verify it almost instantly. Upon my arrival, the checkin process was pretty seamless and the tech was able to get my preliminary screenings/procedures done very quickly. I was then seen by Dr. Keswani, who is very friendly and seemed genuinely interested in my overall wellbeing. He was very attentive and honest with me about all of my inquiries. The last part of my visit was the eyewear selection process. Although the staff was pretty confused about my insurance plan at first, they didn't hesitate to call my plan administrator and clear up their confusion. I told them that I wanted my entire purchase (lenses, frames, enhancers, etc) to stay within the allowance that my insurance provided, and they obliged without trying to up sell or convince me otherwise. They took their time to help me find the frame that complimented my face and at the right price point. Overall, I had a great experience and was very impressed. I scheduled an appointment at West County Optometry for Monday, July 26th at 9:15 am. I received confirmation/reminder text messages all weekend long. When I walked into the office, neither of the receptionists bothered to greet me nor did they ever really acknowledge me. I fumbled around in my purse for a pen to write my name on the check-in roster. Again, neither of the receptionists bothered to offer an assistance. Finally, one of them asked if I had an appointment. I answered yes. I was then asked my name, but told my name was not on the list with no follow up comments for next steps. I had to ask the receptionists if that meant that I could not be seen. I was informed that because my name was not on the list, I did not have an appointment. At no point did either of the receptionists bother to offer any solutions. I rearranged my entire schedule to make that appointment. Before I left the office, I informed the receptionists that I would find another optometrist to help me. Finally, I let both of them know that their customer service skills were horrible. I did not yell, scream, or behave in any manner less than professional. I will NEVER patronize this business again. read more

The moment I walked in the door I was kindly greeted by two ladies in the front desk area. They were so kind and welcoming. I was a little overwhelmed with the large selection of frames lol. I went yesterday, so my experience is still fresh. I'm starting to think that my young adulthood spent in Washington DC was some kind of terrible doctor nightmare, with unprofessional, rude, and uncaring doctors and dentists. Moving to the Bay area woke me up from that dream. West County is great. The front desk staff is super friendly, fast, and competent. The man who did my preliminary tests, Dave, was funny, nice, and professional. Dr. Garrels was wonderful. Not only was he professional, competent, thorough, and kind, but he was totally game to answer my (numerous) questions. I got the $15 photo of the back of my retina, which I probably didn't need, but they did a good job of convincing me I should have (I felt guilty, I've rallied against unnecessary testing in the past). If you have the money to spare, it's a fun thing to look at with the Dr., and they didn't at all pressure me into buying it. The complaint that everyone who has a complaint seems to mention is the fact that you can't browse for glasses on your own. I have to admit that made me think twice about coming, but I did anyway because they are so close to my house. In my opinion, it isn't a problem. Here's why: 1. the staff is incredibly patient and willing to work with you for as long as you need, even if you are really picky and/or indecisive. 2. they are also knowledgeable enough to pick out nice frames that you will probably like. 3. you can still browse around and point to stuff under the glass and they'll pull it out for you to try on. 4. it's kind of nice to have that kind of personal attention and service, with no of the high pressure sales tactics that I've gotten at other offices. I'm so glad that I found a good replacement for my University eye doctor so close to home. If you are skeptical, try it once and you'll probably be back. read more

Dr. Garrels is very kind and thorough. In fact, he's the best optometrist I've been to....ever. He's gentle and soft spoken but is genuine and his desire to help you get the best result is visible. The staff was also very pleasant. The office is clean and has some really great state of the art equipment. All designed to give YOU, the patient, the very best products at the end of the day. The exam itself is fairly priced for the high level of quality care you receive. The frames are all high end...a bit pricey...but if you're going to wear something on your face everyday...why not splurge a little? I've been here twice and I would def. go back TO SEE THE DOCTOR PROS: 1. Dr. Kaswani is super friendly, really knowledgeable, (not patronizing like some other eye docs i've been to in the past), he squeezed me in because the front desk messed up my appt. and he didn't rush me- he has a lot of patience and I felt completely comfortable with him. 2. They have a nice selection, not huge but decent and they have designers. CONS: 1. The set up- you can't try anything on without assistance and usually there is only one person working so if it's busy, which is usually is... you're going to wait a while to try anything on- super annoying -1star 2. Choose carefully! Don't let the fact that you're holding up the line of people waiting to try on frames cause you to rush and regret your selection... b/c it'll cost ya! If you don't like your frames you *might* be able to return them (Dr. has to approve it) but your charged a 20% restocking fee. (Yes, if you choose $300 frames that means $60) Larger companies wouldn't have this or they would "waive" it for you (you know, in order to seem friendly) so therefore, the large companies will get my business for frames and contacts in the future. 3. They're too persistant with their follow-up, to the point where its annoying that they send me stuff AND call me to come in for my next appointment- I'm an adult, I don't need a reminder, but if you must, please just send 1 post card and that's it. read more

I ended up walking away from my brand new glasses and they did nothing to mitigate the problem. The doctor's evaluation and medical clinic aspect of my encounter was great. I was purchasing glasses with bifocals for the first time and purchased the glasses with an additional $$$ for scratch resistant lenses. When I went to pick up my glasses the design / layout of how the reading glasses lens were placed or configured on my lenses was not attractive or functional at all. My insurance wouldn't pay for changing the lenses and west county optometry did NOT have anything else to offer / recourse to correct the situation. So I left my glasses there with the instruction that they at least show the next person how bad this style of glass lens will look before they buy it. Very disappointed because I try to support the small number of business in west county. read more

My wifes medical plan uses west county optomitry. My problem is this. Every pair of glasses i have gotten there has been sub par. I have gotten 5 pairs over time. Not one has lasted more than 3 months. The lenses fog on the inside. Now what is fishy is the covers glasses up to a value of 250.00. But even when i purchased glasses cash there was no improvement. Once the plan glasses are ruined you then have to pay out of pocket for new glasses this is a racket as far as i can see. I used to be a hustler i know one when i see it. I now get my glasses at kaiser and the quality is excelent. read more
