Herbie's Bar and Chowder House - BBQ RIB PLATE WITH FRIES

Keep it easy - this place is awesome. Very laid back and we always make sure to take a trip here…read moreevery Keys trip. Food, service, ambience - all fantastic.

Herbie's Bar & Chowder House in Marathon has been operating under that name since 1963, with roots…read moregoing back to the 1940s as Maggie's Chowder House and later Fishnet's. It's legitimately one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants in the Florida Keys, which gives it a lot of built-in credibility before you even sit down. Walking up to it, you feel that history. The exterior, the gravel lot, the signage--it's pure roadside Keys. Inside, it leans into that "local bar meets tourist stop" vibe: long wooden bar, TVs, stickers everywhere, taps lined up. Then you open the menu and it pivots in every direction--New England chowder house, BBQ joint, burger shack, seafood spot. It's not clear what it wants to be, and that lack of focus carries straight through to the food. We started with both chowders. The clam chowder looks right at first glance, but the texture tells you everything--thick, almost gluey, clearly roux-heavy. The flavor leans aggressively fatty, closer to margarine than butter, with very little clam presence. No briny backbone, no pepper, no lift. We ended up dumping in black pepper and hot sauce just to make it remotely acceptable--but even then, that heavy fat note kept pushing through. Nothing about it reads as New England. The conch chowder fares a bit better. You can actually see a decent amount of conch, and there's a peppery edge that helps. But the broth is thin and lacks the chunky, stewed tomato depth you expect from a proper Keys-style conch chowder. After having it done right earlier at Key Largo Fisheries, the difference was obvious. Then there are the Texas Twinkies--and the photo really says it all. On paper, this should work: jalapeños wrapped in bacon, stuffed with brisket, pulled pork, cheeses, and sauce. In execution, it's just too much. Too much cream cheese, too many competing sauces, meats chopped into a soft, indistinct filling. It collapses into a heavy, muddy bite that feels more overwhelming than satisfying. Looking back at the menu, the simpler move--burger, ribs, even wings--probably would have been the right call. Instead, we ordered straight into the identity crisis. And that theory held up. We went back and grabbed a burger later--cooked a proper medium rare, with well-done, crispy fries--and it was easily the best thing we had from them. I wanted to like Herbie's. There's history, personality, and clearly a loyal following. But between the confused concept and uneven execution, the move here is simple: stick to the basics.

I towed my 2004 Super-Charged Jeep Wrangler TJ to the Keys with a full tank of fuel, now that I'm…read morehere I keep my eye on the fuel gauge, every place here seem like running a marathon and being this old gal gets about 10-12 miles to the gallon and she only consumes 93 Octane or higher so while making a run to Key West and after noticing I already use almost 3/4's of a tank the first few days I felt compelled to fill her up. This RaceTrac is located in Marathon and seems to be one of only a few stations that I know and trust. It seems I wasn't the only one with this opinion on a weekday morning - this place was busy, either they are competitively priced or they have great coffee, I filled my coffee cup before leaving the campground so I only need a credit card and a empty lane at the fuel island. No issues with the pump everything worked alright including the receipt dispenser. Navigating my exit was a little like playing "frogger" it seemed everyone was in a hurry to exit but me. I exercised my patience and waved a few vehicles on being they apparently were late for something as for me I only need to get behind a line of cars heading south with the windows down and the tunes turned up breathing in the salty air. I'm not saying this is the only option or even the best option to fuel up but it is on the right side of the road if you're heading southbound making your exit and entrance onto the overseas highway pretty easy as for the Jeep she purred like a kitten with her tank filled...

Absolutely the cleanest most organized RaceTrac that I have ever been in. Large gas station out…read morefront for easy access. Several hot pizzas in the display case ready to eat by the slice or whole pie. Big beer and candy section. A wall of tobacco products behind the cashier - not a fan. They offered a nice gift card rack and a self-checkout aisle. The bathrooms were very clean.

So good that we went back for day two. We were staying at Casa Morada and this place is easily…read morewithin walking distance. My husband and I went for breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday of our trip. Both days the place was full and very busy, but we never waited more than five minutes because we sat at the counter, which was very comfortable. The staff were friendly and inviting and the service was excellent. They gave us time to peruse the menu and answered our questions. The first day I got the pancake combo with key lime pancakes. The pancakes were perfect, fluffy with crispy edges, but I would've liked a little bit more key lime sauce on top (I should have asked.) The whipped cream with the key lime sauce was a perfect combination. They brought out maple syrup, but I didn't use it. The second day my husband and I shared the French toast sampler and an omelette. The omelette was fluffy and well-filled with toppings. The French toast sampler allowed us to try a bunch of different flavors. We had the regular, cinnamon roll, blueberry, and apple cinnamon. We enjoyed all of them. The only "issue" we had was that my husband ordered the corn beef hash on the first day and did not end up eating it because he thought it was made in-house, but it was not and he really wanted it fresh. It's not necessarily a complaint. It's just something to note. Oh and I almost forgot that both days my husband got one of their fresh made cinnamon rolls from the case upfront. The first day it was an appetizer for him and the second day he took it home so we could enjoy it later. The atmosphere of the place is laid-back, keys vibe with lots of fishing and ocean related decor. They have a huge gift shop with a lot of art that you can walk through while you're waiting for your table. I would definitely go again if I'm back in the Florida Keys.

There was lots of seating available and the atmosphere is lively - definitely a great place to grab breakfast or brunch. The food was decent, but nothing exceptional. We ordered the Mangrove Special and the fish benedict with hogfish and it was decent.
