The next day I got a massage from April, who did things to my facia (myofacia?), got in deep, and basically put me to sleep (not sleep-sleep, but that dreamy place that you just BET people go when they're good at yoga but that you never quite reach because you're not good at yoga, and by you, here, I mean me) before I woke up feeling ready to make more mistakes involving large, rowdy crowds and my delicate, aged body. Special things to note, in no particular order: 1) Music: so many massages I've received seem like a crash course in Buddhism, with lots of OMing and gongs and what have you, which seems almost counterintuitive to relaxation. Who chills out to that? Monks? Do monks get massages that frequently? April played French jazz, which I also don't tend to relax to but that I mean to start using as it knocked me out completely. It's the musical equivalent of Xanax. 2) Technique: I'm not 300% sure about what myofacial release is (she explained it, and I thought I got it at the time, but you don't really absorb much education when you're blissing out), but it is A-MAYZING. My myofacia? Released. To the MAX. 3) Personality: (From "An Open Letter to Massage Therapy") Dear massage therapy: please don't ask what I do for a living while you're making me relax. Talk about counterintuitive. When April engaged me in conversation it was because she needed me to do something to make the massage better or to explain what she was doing and it was always done in a tone of voice that made me feel nurtured and safe and in the hands of a knowledgeable professional, which is important when you're nude and being physically manipulated by a person you don't really know.
