OH MY GOODNESS...YESSSSSS! First, if you are so lucky as to get Sarge as your waiter...you'll wonder how you ever made it through life without him in it. He is SPECTACULAR! He is friendly, but not overly so. He is attentive, does not hover. Knows his menu and most importantly...can tell you what dishes are the STAR of the menu. I am so tired of servers telling me everything is wonderful/great/the best. Please. Friday night of an incredibly long week, a half hour errand in Johnson City resulted in our being there 5 hours. Tired. Hungry. Long drive home. Decided to eat rather than be hangry on 81. I was torn between two dishes, Sarge was able to describe the pro and con of each beautifully and I chose the fried chicken with the butternut squash mashed potatoes (clearly, what they serve in Heaven!) and collards. Now I was not raised on collards, but have come to appreciate​ there are those done well and there are those done horribly. These are the former and delightfully so. You can taste the smoky meat flavor of the fat back that was used. The tang of the acid hit from vinegar is absolutely the perfect note to bring out all the flavor and obliterate any bitterness. The chicken is a full breast, split into two boneless filets with a crunchy coating that is neither too little or too much...very much Goldilocks​ approved as it is juuuuuust right! Husband chosen the Bourbon Onion Burger. Large petals of onion caramelized to tender perfection on a juicy patty cooked to medium perfection! The brioche bun was delightful, toasted just enough to give a small bit of crunch, not resemble a giant crouton. Cheese was melted without being a gooey mess. My husband loves crispy fries and when they arrived, he was silent after his first one, smiled and said OH YES! You have GOT to taste one of these. Just the right crunch, savory seasoning and the idea cut size. We had started with the charcuterie and had pickled baby carrots and red bell pepper in addition to the gouda, havarti and cured meats. The fruit compote and rustic mustard were wonderful compliments to it all. Dessert. We technically had no room, but by the time we drove home we would! Again, Sarge with the perfect recommendation of the chocolate cheesecake on a traditional graham crust and a dried cherry sauce on the top. Traveled well and was enjoyed three nights in a row, a few bites at a time. The little meltaway mints enrobed in chocolate at the hostess desk are the perfect item to pick up and enjoy in the car on the way home and put a bit of a sweet finish on the meal. Start to finish...excellent experience. If you are within 2 hours of Wellington's and not eating there...why not!? Don't let this gem sit undiscovered! read more

My wife and I ate here for our Anniversary recently. It had been a couple years since eating here last. In that time the menu has been pared down to only a handful of items. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare and she ordered the airline chicken. My steak was nearly well done when it arrived. It wasn't bad, but if you pay $40 for a steak it should be perfect. The fried green tomatoes were really good, though everything was overpriced for what you get. The service was mediocre. We will not be back. read more

Very disappointed, been there before,went back for my wife's birthday, had cherries jubilee before, looking for it again and now they don't have that anymore. Menu changed to alacarte, very expensive with small portions. No sweet wine available ,only dry. Ordered fried green tomatoes for an appetizer, got three slices of tomatoes for two people. This restaurant was a classy place to go to. Now it is nothing more than a overpriced burger joint. Tried to talk to a manager and was told no management was there in the evening. What a great way to run a business. We won't be back and certainly won't recommend it. read more

OK, this is one of the nicest places in town and worth the trip. The bar has everything you could ask for and the menu, while limited, is one of those where everything on it is done excellently. It's dark and woody. Only things missing are a smoky poker table and some stiff-ass Brits and this place would be the snootiest good ol' boys club around. It's Country Clubesque. Or ish. Anyway, despite that I come for the food and the laid back atmosphere. The collard greens here are hands-down the best I've ever had! I've tried several experiments at home to replicate them and have come to the conclusion that the chef's secret ingredients must include some combination of proprietary imported balsamic vinegar, heirloom greens, and voodoo. I think they are usually the side on a NY/KC strip steak but you can get them a'la carte too. And you should. It's a great place to meet for a drink, if you're staying in the Carnegie Hotel, you could get over-served and walk to your room. And you should! It's on the pricey side for Johnson City, but really the quality of food here is tops. read more

We had a lovely dinner last night after the horrible winds of the day. We were met promptly and kindly by Kalam. She seated us by the fireplace in a quiet location. Even the gentleman working on something electrical behind the reception desk was welcoming. Jessi stopped by immediately to introduce herself and took our drink orders. She checked back with the drinks and asked if we would like to order. We ordered the brussel sprouts as our starter and my husband ordered a house salad with vinaigrette. Both were delicious. We then ordered the Deconstructed Beef Wellington and the New York Strip. The meals were perfectly prepared and presented. The prices for this quality of meal were excellent. To top off the meal we ordered the vanilla bean cheesecake and the creme brûlée of the day. All desserts are made in house by Chef Jenny and it certainly shows. I make both desserts myself and these were the best. When we want an upscale meal out, we will definitely make a reservation here again. Don't be skeptical like me and wait so long to try it because it is a hotel restaurant. read more

My wife and I had reserved a table for ten there...The service was not good never received..biscuits or our entrees waited over an hour and finally asked to speak to the manager...She said we had been rude to the waitress..that was not true we were very pleased with her..the place was not full many empty tables..The so called manager was some young kid..who was not hospitable..and seemed combative...she was very dismissive...of our concerns...we had to leave..and order out...They didn't even call us to tell us our take out was at the front desk...I do not recommend this place...Real management is needed here..don't believe the hype..most people now just accept mediocrity in service..I do not...it's over priced..over hyped..they even billed me for it...I'll never recommend them to anyone.... read more

So blessed to have stopped in here during my travels. Do not miss this place! Pear & Walnut salad was the best i've ever had- huge chunks of blue cheese. Just had a 80th birthday here for my father in law, they did a very good job and we had a rock star of a waitress, however they did one thing I find very disturbing. On the check they charged $500 as a deposit which was going to be returned, but it's on the check so the gratuity (20% mandated) was also charged based on that extra $500, so $100 additional tip for no reason. Now we were going to leave a higher tip then 20% because of the service we received but did not because we were forced to leave an extra $100 already. Very shady business and I hope someone takes them to court over this in the future!! On a positive note they served 20+ people with steaks that were very close to being done as ordered and that in itself is a good feat! The review would have been 4 stars if they had not ripped us off for $100. read more

We stayed at the hotel it was Saturday night and rather then going out and dealing with the traffic and the lines at other restaurants we decided to eat here. Being a Chef the Apps were really lacking we got the fried green tomatoes, I have had my share especially at Breweries and these were the worst. The deviled eggs were okay but why just 3 halves who got the other half... LOL and why place them on top of a sour pickle slice. We got the Beef tips which was the best beef tips I have eaten and that is saying a lot. The Burgers were spot on as well. The Draft beer was perfect. The service was top notch. Absolutely unacceptable! This is Father's Day June 20, 2021. We stay at the Carnegie Hotel every month and have for over two years now. Wellington's is the restaurant in the hotel. This is the second time We've been denied breakfast. At check in, my wife and I were given the usual paper brochure about the restaurant and breakfast. "No reservations are needed Dr Herron, just know that they stop serving at 11:00," I was told by the front desk manager. So this morning we arrive at the restaurant hostess station at 10:32 AM. I ask for a table for two. We were told let me see what we have. Then she looks over at a lady in the bar area who shakes her head and then were told we have no availability!!!!! Now as I look around, I see over ten tables inside and at least 8 tables outside completely vacant. I inquired about the open tables and note - there are no COVID restrictions here- and the hostess states that we are booked." I then demanded to see the restaurant manager. When she shows up with a fake smile, she says, "We are booked sir!" She ten stated that reservations are recommended. I then ask about the time and all the empty tables. It was now 10:45. They close at 11:00. I ask her so if I stand her for 15 min more then the morning reservations are going to show up? Now there are 4 tables with people sitting at them. I accused them of not wanting to cook anymore and was told thats not true. She was lying. I then asked how did everyone get the sudden memo about reservations and I did not. From here I went to front desk manager who was absolutely apologetic but useless and offed us NOTHING! - maybe a free breakfast next visit? No. I was told there was nothing he could do. I am so angry! I dont think I will ever come to this hotel again. I will NEVER eat at a Wellington's! read more

I would say that eating at a hotel restaurant is usually a mistake; either for the mediocre food and/or exorbitant prices. This was neither. After arriving at the hotel around 1630 on a Monday night, finding the hotel beautiful and the rooms excellent- and having been driving on an many hour road trip (2900 miles) we were happy to not have to drive. We had a late dinner win the deck- I had chicken dinner and a manhattan and the hubby a smoked bourbon drink of some sort. It was good and the price VERY reasonable. The following morning we had a quick breakfast at around 0900- probably some of the best scrambled eggs I've had. The employees were very nice and attentive, and the restaurant itself so beautiful! It's right across the street from the East Tennessee University campus-that did not hinder it at all! Good job! Highly recommend! So I decided to try Wellington's since I was in town. What lousy food! I had the most bland catfish (not usually tasty but this had cornmeal and no detectible spices), collard greens drenched with too much vinegar. The mashed potatoes was the highlight - they were pleasantly average. Then I hoped to salvage this culinary disaster with some banana creme brulee' but that was ruined by the candied crust. The middle was dark brown (obviously the chef lingered too long over it with the torch) but even the edges were bitter. It's odd how many other 4 and 5-star reviews there were. Maybe they had a change of the guard with the cooking staff. Service was slow but not awful. read more

I know and can understand some of the underwhelmed reviews that Wellingtons has received on Yelp. I have been going to Wellington's almost since it opened and there have been some ups and downs that I have ridden out because I really feel this place is a gem. I have primarily eaten in the lounge area which is really nice and there is live Jazz on Thursday and also entertainment many times on weekends - you have to call and ask what they have going on. One of the stars of Wellingtons is a very extensive whiskey list numbering close to 200 and at a very fair prices -- just ask the bartender as they are very up to date on the listing. There is only one other place in JC that has a list as extensive (Label) and it is nowhere as cozy as this restaurant. Anyone staying at the Carnegie Hotel for sure should check out the bar lounge area or if you would rather the restaurant which both offer the same menu. Wellingtons offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. I used to stay at the Carnegie Hotel and would meet business clients for breakfast pretty frequently. Breakfast I would only say is average or a little above although there are some stars on the breakfast menu. The basic breakfast is a little on the expensive side but if you are willing to spend a little more you can get some really great options. My favorite is the southern eggs benedict. Breakfast for sure is not the star of the show here. I would avoid Wellington's on holidays as it can be very busy and service on the slow side but I would say that is true of most restaurants on holidays. Dinner on the other hand is one of the best in Johnson City thus my 5 star rating. I eat exclusively in the lounge area for dinner. The Caesar salad for sure meets my rigid standards including apple-wood bacon and a nicely tangy Caesar dressing. I have also tried the Candied Bacon Deviled eggs and wow they are good!! The house made icebox pickles are a major favorite and it left me wanting more. I have also had the cheese plate which for the price I thought was very good and perfect for two to share over some wine. Steaks are the star of the menu here for dinner but the menu also includes lighter fare such as fish, chicken and pork dishes. The butternut squash mashed potatoes on the bomb as well as the brussel sprouts!! So sides get equal loving care and the relationship with local farms are present in these dishes. Yes Wellingtons has blemishes but for Johnson City I am happy to overlook them and enjoy a high quality and delicious meal in a cozy lounge listening to local jazz musicians!! read more

I like choices. Choices are good. Like when you were little and your mom said apple juice or grape juice. Yeah, choices are good. Especially if we are talking about whiskey. Are you ready for this? A list of almost 200 whiskeys to choose from. This makes me a very happy woman. I wasn't super hungry but I did want a good drink so I headed down to Wellingtons. I was staying at the Carnegie hotel a lovely, older, classic hotel. I didn't feel like driving around trying to find a place to eat, I was tired and had a late spa appointment in the hotel. Don't hate. Since I wasn't too hungry I started with the pear and walnut salad which was delicious. I ordered a half size and it was a very ample portion. Then I ordered the pan seared walnut Brussels sprouts. Good lord they were perfection. Crispy and lightly burnt on the outside, perfectly seasoned and cooked spot on. Here's my favorite part, the only other thing I ordered was squash mashed potatoes. The chef dressed my plate to look like a main dish rather than two random sides. I really appreciated this, so that's a nod for the vegetarians reading this review. Somebody in the kitchen understands that whether you're a vegetarian or not, if you're ordering just vegetable sides you can present them well. It was an endearing gesture that won points from me. Sadly, no mint for a mojito or mule, that took them down a star. For a bar of this caliber they should've been able to produce these two familiar drinks. So, I had to look at my choices. In the end I had a classic negroni with a Makers Mark whiskey swap. Gooood. Then a good ole whiskey sour. Choices. Just like mom used to do. read more

This was my first time to Wellington's and I was not disappointed. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate his birthday. We ordered the fried green tomato appetizer and the orange marmalade that the chef drizzles over it was to die for. I dream about it. So. Freaking. Good. He ordered a filet for dinner and it was so tender, it basically melted in your mouth. I ordered the salmon. I have no idea what voodoo magic happens in the kitchen but the salmon was amazing. Crispy on the outside with every bite, but the inside was so moist and flavorful. We finished dinner with a deconstructed German chocolate torte. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for somewhere special. The atmosphere is wonderful for any special event in your life, or if you enjoy fine dining. read more

If you're looking for a place with a decent whiskey list in the area- this is it. Their dinner menu was decent, but not as expansive as I had expected. There was a lot of sandwiches. I had the salmon and it was cooked perfectly. I loved the bok choy as well. For dessert our table had the torte, the bundt cake, and the creme brulee; with the creme brulee being the stand out. Amazing meal. The bread and butter brought out pre meal was a start. The chives in the butter was a nice touch! Then for my entree I had the flat Iron pork. It was a perfect cut and perfectly cooked. The brussel sprouts were really good too. Then I finished with the Vanilla Creme brulee which was a great ending to an amazing meal. Atmosphere was very elegant and great service too. I highly recommend! Had breakfast here the following day and it didn't disappoint either. My omelet and home fries were amazing. The biscuit and gravy was outstanding. I have not had the pleasure of trying out their dinner menu, but the breakfast food is oh-so good! My favorites are the Amy Special (I add sausages to mine), southern eggs Benedict, and the pear salad. Staffs are very friendly and professional, the Art deco furnitures are gorgeous and scream CLASS. I will update my review once I get to try their famous deconstructed beef wellington in the future, which I am sure is pretty darn awesome. read more

Came to Wellington's for my last night in Johnson City. They had a decent list of beers, so I tried the Hi-Wire Lager. The complimentary bread/butter was great. I'm not sure what was in the butter, but it was a nice twist. I went to Wellington's in hopes of getting a Wellington. The only version on the menu was a "deconstructed" Wellington. The filet was cooked perfectly. I was, however, a little let down by the presentation and overall idea of a deconstructed dish. Part of the Wellington experience, other than the taste, is the effort and time that goes into crafting such a dish. Nonetheless, the food was tasty and I enjoyed my last meal in Johnson City. read more

If you're ever in East Tennessee you just have to come here. The staff was so kind and accommodating and kept the restaurant open late for a group of 20+ after a victory dinner from competition- we were so grateful and the food was just delicious. The filet is incredible and marinated just right, as are the side dishes that compliment the entree perfectly. They have a pretty wide scale of entrees to select from and will accommodate any and every request possible. we had a few small children with us and they even made Mac and cheese for the little ones. The service was wonderful and even with our large group they made sure every last guest had everything that they wanted. read more

Sat at the bar after a FABULOUS spa treatment and unfortunately the bar and service was not the same as the spa. We sat down at a table and had to ask to be served after sitting for 15 minutes and both bartenders were extremely dry and rude. It is a very nice space in which to sit. The room is classy, old world stylish (although it was built in 2000) and quiet. The service is good, unhurried and respectful. The dinner menu is quite good. We opted for the 'deconstructed' beef wellington. Before I criticize, let me say, it was delicious. Now, I'll criticize. Lately, I have been served a variety of 'deconstructed' foods. It's an upper class, poncy sort of way to describe lazy preparation. It was the same with the beef wellington. As you all know, beef welly is a goodly lump of steak, plastered with pate and baked in a pastry crust...It is not beef, with pate and a chunk of puff pastry on the side. But, as I said it was delicious, as were the soups. The bread was the only mild disappointment. We were staying in the Wellington Hotel so that we could have a good platform, as we were traveling, from which to watch the Tony Bennett 90th birthday show on the teev. (It was very good). So, we needed breakfast also following our night of indulgence. I had the world's best eggs benedict served with fried green tomatoes (we're in the South y'all) and Miss had a croissant with lots of yummy stuff, and it was cheap. Very good, delicious and cheap, is an irresistable combination; and I would recommend the brekky over the dinner of the previous night. But they were both good. We have lived just 15 min's south of Johnson City for over 1 1/2 years now. We have passed the Carnegie Hotel with the big "Wellington's" restaurant sign probably about a hundred times, always talking about wanting to try it out, but always forgot trying to do so for unknown reasons. Tonight was our 42nd wedding anniversary and when thinking of where to eat, my wife thankfully remembered and suggested we finally try "Wellington's." We made reservations and finally gave it a try! tried. Wow! The "Deconstructed Wellington" dinner sounded great to both of us, and we were not disappointed! Incredible! The beef melted in our mouths! I have never had beef that tender and delicious in my life! All the fixins that came with it were delicious too! The desert was also perfect! The restaurant is very classy, but not stuffy! "Tara" our server was great! She made our anniversary a very special event, even though we never told her it was our anniversary until we were leaving! The bar is beautiful in an old 40's-50's era manner. We are sooo glad we finally tried this establishment and will definitely be returning soon! This review is for the bar at Wellington's. (The restaurant is delicious and I've enjoyed eating there every time I've been). The bar space is cozy and fun and seems like a great place to have drinks, until you realize that the female bartender seems to hate all customers and to want everyone to leave as quickly as possible. I felt more like an inconvenience than a paying customer. We couldn't even get ice close to closing time because she "melted it all". If I were the owner of this business I would want to know customers were being treated this way. I've been several times recently due to the Broadway at ETSU shows being held next door. We've had the same experience at the bar every time. The owner/manager should be aware of the shows next door and plan accordingly as I would expect it would bring in more patrons than their average weeknight. The bar is a unique venue in Johnson City and it would be great if the service were better. Next time I have a chance to visit a bar near ETSU I will choose Cootie Browns instead. read more

Kind of a poor breakfast. My eggs were sitting in a pool of water, the biscuit felt like it was made from a box recipe. Home fries were just wedges of potato deep fried. Grits were pretty good. Might have just been s bad day. But i was passing through, I'll never find out. read more
