You know, after living here since the 90s you kinda get some favorites. Well sadly The Swiss Bake Shop is gone perhaps forever. I had an adult birthday party for an old friend and I asked What kind of cake they wanted. Vanilla with chocolate was the answer, so a shop that been here forever was my go to. They were competent on the phone and the price for a ten inch cake was reasonable for these unreasonable times we live in. The cake looked great and the taste was wonderful! At work each year on our birthday, we get to pick the cake we would like for our special day. Every year this task gets more and more difficult because excellent bakeries seem to be disappearing (unless you live in South Philadelphia or are in the area near Crossroads Bakery). A friend suggested Weinrich's and ordered a lemon cake ~ it was a buttery, superbly moist layer cake with whipped cream frosting and the decoration on top was so beautifully done, it was most certainly a work of art. We found Weinrich's several years ago when we did a taste test of cupcakes from 6 bakeries in the area to help us decide where to get some for our daughter's birthday. Their cupcakes were (and still are) the most moist and delicious we've found and now we use them for every birthday and special occasion when we need a cake or cupcakes. We get so many compliments from guests and I love referring people to them. I also order from them for people at work who have birthdays! They are so easy to work with and only need about 2 days for most orders. They also do an excellent job with printed art on top of their cupcakes which really makes it easy to do a dessert for a themed birthday. read more

There were a lot of options but I was very surprised to find that nothing was really catching my eye. Don't think I've had that happen at a bakery before. I wanted an eclair, but was kind of turned off by all the extra topping they decided to add over the chocolate. Also a fan of cheesecake, but their cheesecake had frosting on it...? There was a LOT available on a Saturday afternoon which makes me wonder how fresh everything actually is. The setup is kind of odd. You pick stuff out in a very crowded narrow room and then they send you two rooms over to a mostly empty dining area to pay. What's not to love about cupcakes, brownie, macaroons or cake? You could smell the sugar walking into the bakery. This bakery celebrated 100 years in 2019. So they've been around for awhile. The only downside was they didn't have coffee so we had to make a separate stop. I bought six brownies, six cupcakes and an iced brownie for me. It was $30. Gone way down hill. Very expensive, not very good. Just had "gourmet" cupcakes for $3 each (regular sized) and the cakes were blah and the buttercream was waxy. The cannoli were also lack-lustre. The bread (prepackaged) was a bit stale. Not going back. Especially since they no longer make doughnuts! (And it is a bit perplexing why they have the bakery side (small/cramped) and the spacious "cafe" side where no one (that we've ever seen) sits. read more

Due to no fault of my own (although they would beg to differ), the top tiers of the cake shifted. DONUT QUEST CHAMPION SO FAR! There isn't a thing here I haven't taken a bite of and not LOVED (discounting anything with buttercream filling because that's just a personal preference). The seating area located on the right side of the store is where you order your coffee and can sit around a marble table with cushy chairs and a charming decor. There is also a TV up in the corner, permanently fixed on the Food Network. If you aren't sure what to order, they thoughtfully provided a colorful chalkboard full of favorite beverages from all the staff members you could try. The donuts themselves are created with master baking skills, which I can tell because everything is light, yeasty, flavorful and not at all greasy or ever stale. My favorite donut, powdered with custard filling (aka Bavarian for some ppl), is not something they normally make, but will custom make any donut you like if you call ahead the night before. I have totally done this and I am a customer for life now. Delicious! I have seen a nice variety of specialty donuts during my few visits so far, including such novelties as apple filled donuts and red velvet donuts (which my son gobbled up!). I have not tried their cakes, but they offer tiered cakes by a per person pricing, which are made from pound cake. They also have lighter sheet cakes. I will eventually have to sample their muffins and cookies because they look pretty good too, but for now, I will stick to my donut quest. While I was visiting this establishment one fine morning, I decided to ask the matron of the establishment, the master baker's wife, Mrs. Weinrich for a tour of the place. I had noticed the cases full of vintage baking wares and was intrigued by the old Dutch/German looking cookie/candy molds. She happily gave me a story about every black & white photo in the place, including the original bakery in 1915 NYC all the way down through the family members (aka indentured servants to the bakery) to their wedding photo. read more

Stopped at Weinrich's bakery just because I had an urge for a brownie. I purchased one brownie went to pay for it and the girl at bakery counter marked on a piece of paper one brownie with no price. I probably wouldn't have taken it if I saw the price. I went to the other side of the store to pay for the brownie and the lady at the register said $4.25 I couldn't believe my ears of the price. One brownie approximately 4" square. At this point in time stores are just taking advantage of price increases from covid. I understand that during Covid many prices went up for example, eggs went up astronomically, but now they're down to almost an all-time low. The brownie was good, but as principal, I will not purchase any of their products again in the future because they price gouge you. NOT NECESSARY!! Giving them a three star for the brownie! Weinrich's is back after months of being closed for Covid. They have taken precautions with lucite/plexiglass barriers between the staff and customers, and although they do have tape markings on the floor every 6', customers are within a foot of one another and the safety precautions aren't enforced. Weinrich's still has the title for the best cheese danish around. They no longer have the beautifully decorated cupcakes with flowers on top, as I went Fort the second time this week for a variety of cupcakes, danish, and cookies. The prices have taken a jump. $20 per pound for cookies, $4 for a black and white cookie, $3.75+ for decorated sugar cookies, and cupcakes range from $2.50 for plain cake and icing to $3.50+ for oreo, s'mores, red velvet, and other "specialty" cupcakes. I visited Lochel's for the first time this week. Safety precautions are enforced with only 2-3 customers allowed in the store at a time. Lochel's cupcakes are as good as Weinrich's and more reasonably priced. The danish, especially the cheese, rule at Weinrich's. The quality of the cheese is about the same at the two. But Weinrich's loads theirs with cheese. The front of house staff, waiting on customers, has taken a hit overall. Some are not pleasant, regardless of the time off day. This morning, I left a little disappointed, as Weinrich's had become a place I'd go to every week, sometimes twice, and rave about. With a better experience at Lochel's, Weinrich's should take a step back, and evaluate the overall business model and consistency. read more

I went to a baby shower about 8 years ago and the cake was from Weinrich's. It was delicious and this has been our go to bakery ever since even though I live blocks away from another bakery. I will travel the 15 to 20 minutes because of the quality of everything I've purchased and the friendly staff. First, the fact that I can purchase single slices is wonderful and in addition to whatever I'm there for, I typically leave with at least one slice of cheesecake and one of whatever else is in the case in addition to their cinnamon bread and cookies for the kids. All of our birthday cakes are purchased there and I'm putting in an order for this week for the chocolate cake and cupcakes. For a birthday in April we had their strawberry shortcake and of course the chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream icing and cupcakes. So, so delicious. I can't say enough good things about this bakery. I highly recommend. This bakery is so cute on the outside! I have been meaning to visit, but never found the time. I was in the area on Sunday and decided to check it out. I wanted to purchase sticky buns for my Mom and Nana (to do something nice). The inside of the bakery is very cute, and big! One side is a cafe/wedding cake taste testing, the other side is the actual bakery. I picked up the circle of sticky buns that had both nut and raisin on them. I didn't actually eat one, just my Mom and Nana, but they both said they were good! The girl behind the counter was also really friendly and helpful! The only reason I'm giving one less star is because it seemed like there weren't as many bakery items as I expected there to be. But everything still looked cool. They also have the rolling pin prop from the movie Bruce Almighty which is pretty neat!! read more

We used Weinrich's for our 250 person outdoor wedding this month. Had a fabulous experience, seamless communication, on time with delivery, as even delivered personally by Cynthia. We are so grateful to Weinrich's for taking our large order. We did a variety of small sized desserts, a small wedding cake, and even some gluten free desserts. We also got donut holes which added a nice variety to the small treats we had our for our guests. Can't thank Cynthia and her team enough, we had a wonderful experience.
