I've been a customer at WECU for over a decade and have had the best service and the lowest fees. Best aspects: very kind and friendly tellers and managers; excellent rates for my mortgage and HELOC; fabulous online banking, including the ability to pay my mortgage online, free transfers to other banks, free bill pay, and an easy interface; the first chipped visa card I could get in the U.S.; phone-based deposits of checks; no holds on any check I've deposited. One reviewer said WECU only allows six online transfers per month. This is false. They allow six, which is dictated by federal law. Another reviewer complained that it's hard to deposit a check received at the end of the week due to their hours. But you can download their free app and deposit the check via your phone. A reviewer said the only way to transfer funds to other banks is by wire. False. I transfer money to and from my other online banks, free, regularly. One reviewer complained that WECU's appraiser gave a low value to their house for a refi. Appraisers are independent contractors, so this isn't on WECU. I have had nothing but excellent service from WECU, including when I've had complaints. Every single time I've voiced a concern a representative from upper management has called me at home to discuss my concerns, and every single time my requests have been met. I moved to Bellingham about four years ago, where I'd been a credit union member since 1994. When I got here, I wanted to support a local credit union and keep my banking in the community, so I joined WECU. Unfortunately, my experience has been incredibly disappointing. Without any notice or explanation, WECU closed my accounts and later told me I'm not allowed to open a new one. No one has contacted me to explain why, or to resolve anything. It went so far that WECU actually contacted my old credit union, and the staff there were so alarmed by what they heard that they personally called me -- asking what was going on, because in decades of experience they had never seen a fellow credit union behave this way. For a member-owned institution that's supposed to stand for fairness, transparency, and community, this experience has felt anything but. I truly hope WECU reconsiders how it treats its members -- especially those of us who chose it because we believe in the credit union philosophy. read more

The in-person help is excellent, and the online service aceessible. What destroys this is their "fraud alerts" The alerts are generated by AI and there seems no real way to stop them. They will stay in place blocking you from your money even after your follow the procedure. There is no real support unless a branch is open so if you go into a evening weekend, or holiday with a fraud alert you can be out of money for several days, which can be often disastrous. I've been traveling when this has happened and found my trip ruined. When I did get a call on my most recent fraud alert it was from the Phillipines from someone who seemed to have difficulty with English through a bad connection. Basically incomprehensible. I did call in to WECU and escalated this. Let's talk about WECU. I'm finally closing my accounts with them. They continuously reorder deposits and withdrawals to their advantage. I have never worked with any kind of bank or credit union that takes so long to process transactions. Admittedly we have had a hard time paying our car loan, but we have always paid on or before the 10 days grace period. Because their system doesn't process the transaction that day, or even the next business day, we get late fees and then calls, emails, letters, saying our lan is 20 days past due. We have tried calling to discuss this and they just tell us to move the due date.....taking no credit on their end that their system must be from 1997 and isn't able to process transactions quickly enough. We are trying to refinance through a different company just to get out from under WECU. They aren't understanding, won't reverse the late fees, and it's just becoming more frustrating to try and work with them. I would never want to do any kind of business with them. read more

Very disappointed in the response of refinance inquiries to wecu. It seems as though working your ass off to get a 850 credit score isn't enough anymore. Show your income! I say there's dealerships willing to loan 0 percent for a car still. Take your high interest rate and your condescending attitude and slowly bleed out. I have been a customer for a decade. It was good in the beginning, they were friendly, professional, and were quick to educate about financial matters. In the last 3 years though, the customer service has dropped to rude, misinformation, and dismissive attitudes. Also, they are only local to Whatcom and not available in other areas, with a false co-op narrative that implies community contribution without delivering. Walk Away! Terrible experience with this institution, intentionally involving themselves is shady behavior. I had multiple untimely deaths in the family and have been in complications with the finances. Explaining the situation without getting too detailed with the representative, they said "I'll note that here". Fast forward to March 24, I make a payment for $858 and the withdrawal transaction is summarized. Then on March 28th I attempt to make another payment and it's instantly rejected which persuades me to investigate further. Upon searching I then realized they rejected $858 payment but haven't returned it to my account. After about 3 or 4 representatives hitting me with the "let me transfer you to a specialist in that department" i finally was connected with a helpful individual named Laura. She said they would put me on a call back list. No call on Friday or Saturday. I finally reached out on Monday only be given the run-around and to learn my vehicle was repossessed on March 28th. How convenient! Call on Monday the 31st and They proceed to "transfer me to a specialist" for almost 40 minutes. Then ask if i want be placed on a call back list. This place is very unprofessional in my opinion. Once connected with the specialists Anthony, he then told me they didn't return the funds they were redirected to a holding account. They rejected payment but really accepted payment and then put me on a repossession/delinquency. I take full responsibility for getting behind but that wasn't a choice. I communicated throughout the situation but they handled it in a shady ass way. Steer clear and please don't make the same mistake I made by trusting this financial institution. Let's see. This place just can't seem to stop messing with my accounts. They will constantly charge my loan account hundreds extra doubting I have valid insurance despite me having valid proper insurance on the automobile. They keep locking my cards down claiming fraud when it is transactions I have approved and made numerous times. Locking down my cards has cost me money from bills trying to process payments and can not because of cards being locked. Then those businesses charge me a late fee. WECU has charged me NSF fees of 16.00 when I have had no transactions not clear. Which don't make sense cause my chance I don't have money in account to cover, it not suppose to processes any transactions. This place just keeps costing me money. I wanted to share my experience with the translator at WECU Bank. My mom has a disability and does not speak English. She needed my help updating her financial information for her apartment, as she is required to review it every year. I understood that, for verification purposes, the bank needed to speak with my mom directly. Even though my mom has a disability, she had to physically go to the bank the day before to add me as her authorized representative. However, when I later tried to set up online banking, it required updating my phone number. When I spoke with an agent, they insisted on speaking directly with my mom. My mom, who is mentally alert but only has a first-grade education, did not understand the banking terms in Vietnamese. The translator mispronounced a name while speaking to the agent, so I asked my mom to spell it out correctly. This upset the translator, who became angry and yelled at my mom, even using inappropriate language, just because I corrected her. Additionally, the translator used complex financial terms that my mom could not understand. My mom begged me to explain things to her in simpler words. I am writing this review in the hope that the bank will take action to improve its services and address my complaint about the translator. Using a translator with such unprofessional and disrespectful behavior can seriously harm your business. I urge the bank to ensure better training and accountability for translators to provide proper support for customers, especially those with disabilities and language barriers. read more

They charged me a late fee because they tried to charge my car payment hours before my paycheck and it didn't go through. They didnt notify me that it didnt go through until 2 weeks later after the late fee in which i had to call back and was left on hold for half an hour then told to leave a voicemail. I eventually got on the phone with them and they refused to remove the late fee. This being the first time ive had a late payment. I recommend not using this bank they are incompetent and predatory. read more

They are good at putting off, and not resolving issues. I opened an account with $10,000. They were going to refinance my vehicle as well. 20 minutes after I left I got a call, they changed their mind and decided not to reference me. No reason given. My last ATM deposit was never credited to my account. I have the receipt but they still won't give me my money. It has been 2 months. I have contacted them multiple time & keep getting the run around. They never directly answered my questions and hang up on me when I call. I have never been treated so poorly by a financial institution in my life. I have lost all trust with WECU. They left me no choice but to close my account to avoid any more missing money. read more

But checking my bank account today and seeing that it's $100 off (see photo), and calling and having them basically say "oops, we're still working on our system" is enough for me to be done. Several incidents over the years left a bad taste in my mouth but today was the final straw: I have great credit score (839), I have a full time job w/ direct deposit, my checks never bounce but today when I applied for a personal loan they denied me because apparently I put down the wrong reason for requesting it. WECU reached out to me with an offer for a pandemic relief loan that was low interest with excellent terms. i have also gotten a debt consolidation loan that was easy to apply for and receive. WECU staff has always been helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable about services that best suit my specific needs. I applied for a credit card back in May and I just got a call today on it. That right there is absolutely terrible member service. Then she tells me she is sending me a code and to keep it because it will need the code to access the documents to sign. Sure, no problem. I get the documents but the code I have is not what was entered into the docu-sign so I cannot access them. I email her back (I spoke to her less than 5mins prior) and she states that she cannot assist me that I have to call. What? You just put the incorrect code in and now I have to call? Again, terrible member service. Where is accountability? Call me back, send me another code. Take care of what you did incorrectly. Your response should never be "sorry you need to call the main number". Even when I went back again to try and I hit "didn't receive access code" it told me to contact via email who I had already contacted! Now she won't even respond to my emails. AWFUL! read more

I used to love WECU but when they make decisions on when I pay my credit card, that is not appropriate. I checked my account and saw a change that took my account in the negative. I never received a call prior to their debit from my checking. I asked to reverse it and they couldn't. Then, although I was told I could use my credit card to carry me to my next paycheck I now find it, too is locked. Credit unions should NOT have the ability to spend my money without my authorization. So now, with no credit card and a negative checking I'll have no Christmas money. What they didn't know (although I told them) is that I had plans to pay off a large portion of my credit card in January. Worst customer service. Call in asking for help with setting up an online account and when I ask the rep to repeat a question, they hung up the phone. This wasn't the first bad experience. Last time I went in to request my account information for a direct deposit, a rep printed out my account number with one letter crossed out and changed to a different letter with a pen. I asked why and the guy told me that something was wrong with the computer so he corrected it. Long story short I figure out later at home that the original letters were correct and that guy changed my information with malicious intent. I used to love WECU. I've banked with them for about 15 years. Lately, however I've begun to question whether I will continue to do so. They have become impersonal and more like a traditional bank in terms of their fees. Several times, because transactions take so long to show up, I have ended up with an overdraft fee. It seems like they let charges pile up before they actually remove them from the account so it's hard to track an accurate account balance even when regularly checking the app. Obviously this is to their benefit as innacurate account balances lead to more overdraft fees for them to collect. Recently I was charged by a merchant in error, resulting in over $200 in fees from WECU- even though I was not at fault. The merchant sent a refund, but even in explaining this and speaking with several different people at WECU (all of whom gave me different answers) they were only willing to reverse a small fraction of the fees. I was very disappointed in the lack of customer service and understanding on their part. Not to mention feeling like they wrongfully took $150 from my account. read more

I will now be looking for a new credit union thanks to this ridiculous new web site. For the last 5 years I've printed an Excel Spreadsheet of the previous years business activities online. This year I went to do the same only to find that service is no longer available for any duration than the previous 4 months. You've made my taxes a nightmare and I cannot forgive you for this. After speaking with someone in customer service, she suggested I print my e-statements for the year as "this will work". I've never seen a credit union or bank so disorganized, inconsistent, or/and lazy. I don't understand why this credit union gets such a good rep with locals, but it is not a good credit union. WECU makes me miss my Californian credit union before I moved up here. My biggest complaint: Their customer service is inconsistent...we were told by our loan officer that she would work diligently at a loan for us, never called us, then sent us an email that just said "your loan was not approved" with subject line as "Hi." Very unprofessional and lazy; they do not keep their promises and they do not provide the excellent service I keep hearing about from locals. Maybe my standards are higher. I swapped to Chase and they've been phenomenal in service, always available to help, staffed with true professionals, and they don't nickel and dime you, or read word tracks to you over and over again when you ask a question. dont trust their mobile app. It likes to say you have a bailable funds when you don't. Woke up this morning and had a fat negative balance when I was spending exactly what I had the money for.
