I found myself in the unenviable position of being without the charging cord of my Lumix Panasonic camera. My boss was leaving to go to a national meeting where she was going to be taking important photos. I did not want to send her there with a camera that only had 1/2 of it's battery power. It needed a charge immediately. The person on the phone was number one - very patient with me, as I struggled to find the model #, and access to the battery. Imagine how excited I was to learn they had the cord I needed and could deliver it by 12 noon. Exactly at 12 noon the bicycle courier arrived with the cord. The camera is charging as I write this. Extremely patient and knowledgable staff. Yesterday I went into Webb Cam with the intention of buying a lens, but in the back of my head I was prepared to pull the trigger on a new body as well. However Mercury in Retrograde or just my bad luck was proving to make this a way more challenging sale. After many failed attempts made on my card the staff proceeded to be patient and kind, not once did they make me feel like a slack who didn't pay their bill or like I didn't have the funds. Having worked in repair, rental and sales for many years in the past I know how challenging "photo nerds" can be so I appreciate your courteous staff. Entering this store made me feel like I was a criminal, and the management were officers ready to arrest me. I have visited this camera shop multiple times over the last few years. My original review was a 5 star review. At the time, I was impressed by the selection of equipment the store had to offer. Originally buying photo chemicals, I've bought lots of film rolls, and other products from this shop. In Fall 2019 I visited with my sister to teach her film photography, and purchased a few hundred dollars worth of film, developing tanks, reels, a thermometer, etc. I also purchased two camera straps; one for me and one for her. An employee with a moustache assisted me. Upon arriving home, I found the larger camera strap was evidently used, with rust and corrosion on the rings. It seemed to even be the wrong color than pictured on the box. Being a busy student, I returned the next week (Saturday) to explain my situation with the management. Not only did the employees pretend they didn't remember my purchase last week, they reprimanded me. This very same moustached employee claimed to not recall... They told me in a disrespectful tone multiple times that there was no way this could have happened as the straps were sealed from the factory. I walk back to the strap section with one of the employees and I pointed at an *unsealed* strap in the back section! I own nearly 20 film cameras, probably 100 lenses, and digital bodies, incl Nikon D850. There is absolutely no reason I would attempt to return a used item. Today I dropped a lens and shattered the protective filter; I totally freaked out and thought I would need to buy a totally new lens, but I called Webb Cam and they picked up immediately, answered my questions, and I came into the store immediately! I've been a customer at Webb Cam since 2017 but will now advise anyone looking for a local camera shop to go elsewhere.  When I previously brought a lens in to be looked at, I watched it roll off a desk and it wasn't addressed until I responded to an email questionnaire about my experience. They apologized and offered a half refund so I didn't hold it against them because they at least tried to make it right. In December of 2021 I brought a camera body in to be looked at because it wasn't focusing correctly. The front of house staff was very kind and directed me to the "in-house expert," the owner John. He initially told me it wasn't working as expected because I accidentally turned on back-button focus (not an accident, that's my preferred setting), then that my diopter was off (it wasn't), and then that the lens I was using must be broken. After disproving each claim and insisting that the camera itself wasn't focusing correctly, John reluctantly agreed to send the camera into Nikon. Nikon was not particularly helpful, which I don't fault WebbCam for, but since WebbCam sent it in instead of me, I wasn't able to communicate with Nikon. John didn't check with me before requesting that my still-broken camera be sent back to me. Although I would have tried to escalate the issue further with Nikon, I ultimately would have paid to have it fixed because a camera that doesn't focus is useless to me. He tried to stop the delivery, but it had already been sent. I was charged and I now have to send it back in to be looked at again. I asked that John waive the shipping fee because ultimately his choices led me to have to send it in twice, rather than just once, but he refused. Please listen to other reviews recounting John's dismissive attitude and go elsewhere. I've been a full-time photographer for over six years and don't appreciate being spoken to like a child at every turn. I expect him to respond to this review pointing the finger at Nikon, but please hear that my chief grievance was with the way he interacted with me personally when I first came into the shop. read more

I had to buy some supplies for a photo class I'm taking right now and this store is one of the recommended shops on the class syllabus. Now, I'm amazed no one has reviewed this place yet because it is hands down the best photo shop I've been to in Center City Philadelphia. No, they do not do developing; instead, they sell equipment and supplies of every kind for the novice to professional photographer. Lenses, chemicals, light systems, new and used equipment, expert service department, bags and cases, tripods, EVERYTHING that you would expect in a camera shop. Yes, there is a Calumet photo down in South Philly, but if you're more inclined to stay in Center City as you do not have a car, THIS is the PLACE to take your stuff. Most supplies are moderately priced and they have a nice selection of used cameras and photography equipment. When I asked for a few prices on used products, the price quotes were very reasonable and in line with what I was expecting. There appeared to be a very loyal customer base for Webb Cam as the owner who was working the counter knew every person that came in after me by name. He told me that they've been in business in the same location since 1970. It's a little bit off the beaten path, but so are most places of this sort. Professionals and people who love photography will find what they want regardless of location. However, like most small retailers, the prices of most of their new equipment (for the cameras and lenses especially) cannot compare to the large camera houses of B&H or Calumet. (Although, some smaller models were priced to match B&H.) I would recommend stopping in this store and if you've got a bum digital camera, are looking for inspiration, or need new supplies. I realized right before leaving for a work trip that one of my canon batteries was on the fritz. Not having time to go to my own local camera store, I popped in here right before a convention at the PCC to grab another battery. The staff was super helpful and totally not pushy on buying genuine Canon vs third party. I also needed a battery with some charge on it, and the genuine ones never come charges. I also bought a basic lens filter for my 55mm. I don't know much of the technical stuff about cameras but coming in to a place like this where they don't make you feel dumb or try and pull the wool over your eyes because you're not savvy made me thankful. I bought an Canon AE-1 Film camera off Ebay. Everything was working great except I couldn't focus! I was able to troubleshoot that the focusing screen was inserted improperly, but actually fixing it was outside of my comfort zone. Brought it in to Webb Cam and spoke to Ben, who was knowledgable and able to fix it in a few minutes while I browsed the store. Nothing more, nothing less. I am by no means a professional photographer, but my boyfriend is. We have been going to Webb Cam for gear and repairs for a few years, and they have never let us down. If you have a camera that is broken, you can take it to them and they will tell you if it is worth the money to repair it -- some little point-and-shoots are just not worth fixing, sad as that is. I've never bought a whole camera here, just peripherals. The service has been professional and courteous. If you need heavy pro stuff like seamless backdrops and major lighting rigs, Calumet might be a better bet, but for the hobbyist, Webb Cam is great. read more

So, I recently found Webb Cam because I was looking to buy some film in a hurry. I normally order it online but I was heading out for a trip and needed some in hand. My go to place is usually Indie Photo Lab but they're a but pricier. Webb Cam basically had the low online prices, in-store. Not only do they have a great selection of equipment and gear but also a deep knowledge of camera bodies and glass. I later took my 5 Minolta lenses to get a CLA and was happy to find that only one needed service. However, I was informed that the service would surpass the cost of just replacing the lens. Very happy with my experience here. Came in for a mirrorless camera sensor cleaning and the staff was very helpful and professional. When the (presumably) owner saw that I didn't have a UV filter on my expensive lens, he up sold me in a way that was very friendly and non-aggressive. And he offered me a used high quality used German UV filter for $20 which was exactly what I needed. When I was trying out some insert cases for my camera the associate even cut off the tag in order for it to fit in my bag, even though he knew I may or may not buy. read more

Webbcam is a solid mom & pop type of camera store. They don't have everything you could possibly need, but they have a good bit of it. They don't have GREAT prices on everything, but that's to be expected. They're one of the last standing places like this in the city, and something's gotta give. One thing there should be no premium on, however, is customer service. Whenever I enter Webbcam I feel like I've walked uninvited into someone's home. Now, there are some nice folks that work here that will try to help once they've freed themselves from whatever they're doing at their desks, but all the final approval on things seems to run through the middle-aged bespectacled man in the back. I don't know this gentleman's name, but he always comes off as a dick, has a gruff and short manner and isn't very welcoming. This manner would be fine if this weren't a mom & pop shop - these two things combined make you unsure whether you're getting the best deal, or if he even wants your business. My most recent - and dare I say, LAST- experience was in trying to do a one-day rental on a Sigma 85mm 1.4. I've rented from Webbcam at least 5 times before, EACH time using a VISA check card to rent the lens. I've rented other higher-priced lenses from them (Canon & Sigma 24-70s) and I was allowed to use the check card with no hold placed on my card for the value of the lens. My last rental was for a Sigma 70-200 lens that I was required to basically pay for ($1300), and be refunded minus the price of the weekend rental. I thought that was strange and new, but ate it since it was a weekend rental on a big ticket item. With the Sigma 85mm, however, I was basically told I couldn't use my VISA check card, and that if I wanted to use it, I would have to pay a 6% fee on top of the rental for ONE DAY. Now, if this is the policy, it's the policy. And if it's changed to that recently, then so be it. But post it somewhere. In fact, have a sign that says NO CHECK CARDS FOR RENTALS. Better yet, insure your rental lenses so that the customer doesn't have to BUY a lens just to rent it. Or do away with your "rental" program. I can understand covering yourself, but too much is too much, and I definitely feel like I got "special treatment" with this last rental, because the 70-200mm rental prior (a more expensive item) was only about a month before. When I get wind of a shopkeeper moving his pricing structure on the fly, I don't want to do business there anymore. You never know what you might get. So, as I said. They likely have gear you need. You just won't enjoy buying it, and you might pay more than you should if they guy with the glasses is in a bad mood. read more

WebbCam is that classic camera store which is just a little bit cluttered. The kind of place where you welcome the help of the very knowledgeable staff behind the counter to find stuff and guide you towards what you need. I've been a WebbCam customer for my entire time in Philly (about 6 years now) and they're the only good sized store other than Calumet which is out of the way for me. Conveniently located in Chinatown, this shop is packed full of gear for all formats of film and digital. You walk in and are greeted by racks of bags to your right and stacks of paper and developer to your left. Walk in a bit and you'll see the cases of gear lining the back wall and front counter with lighting, accessories and tripods in the middle. Behind the counter you'll see the crew that makes it all easy and the 2 white cottonball dogs which will come out and greet you. A double door refrigerated case is loaded with all the film you need, ask and you shall receive. If they don't have it, they'll order it for you and call you when it's in. If you have questions about anything, they'll have the answers. With a mix of old timers who have been in the biz for decades here in Philly and some of the young kids up to speed with what the students might need, they have the range of customers covered. They're always up to talk shop about the newest gear or some classic piece you might have on you when you walk in like true gearheads. While some of their prices are a little bit higher than what you might find online, their knowledge is priceless and I'm more than happy to be a patron here. Lens rentals are quite reasonable, and they have a decent selection for a small, local store. On the first day of class in college, my photography professor made it abundantly clear that (with some exclusions, of course, for professionals, working in the field) if you carry a camera bag, you are either a tourist and/or basically begging for it to be targeted by a mugger. Better, he said, to use an old winter hat, something fleece and cushiony, and store your camera in that inside a regular purse or bag. It's discreet and doesn't immediately scream "CARRYING EXPENSIVE CAMERA EQUIPMENT OVER HERE." I've always heeded his advice, though in the years since graduating have skipped the hat and have just carried my DSLR in my bag like any other item. tl;dr version: I don't baby my gear. While this has served me well, it's also meant my camera has been exposed to its fair share of debris and detritus that floats around. That, coupled with a few months in Europe last year, changing lenses on the fly, meant that my sensor was Dirrty (with a capital D, and two r's, like the Christina Aguilera video of the same name) and was showing a ton of little black specks and spots on every landscape photo. Webb Cam came recommended by my brother, who has his own darkroom, so I stopped in last week and took advantage of their "Check-In Discount" sensor cleaning offer: check-in on Foursquare or Yelp and get 50% off a cleaning! The guys were both so friendly and helpful, and the whole thing took less than five minutes. There were no upsell attempts and no pushy sales gimmicks; the 50% off offer didn't come with any strings attached. And the best part is that my camera is squeaky clean again. The worst happened a few nights ago when I dropped my camera on the ground, lens first. To my fortune, the only damage was to the lens hood, which lodged itself behind the threading and prevented the focus ring from turning. Since I'm all thumbs at repairing this sort of thing, I stopped by Webb Cam to see if there was anything they could do. I showed the lens to John, the owner, who sat down with it, while I perused the old film cameras behind the glass shelves. This store caters to professional photographers and they do it very well. There is very little "showroom" here, as they cater to folks who know what they want. When you go to their front counter, they can either bring you what you ask for or discuss your needs and arrive at what best suits your budget and aims. They know most lines backwards and forwards. Warning - they sell and rent quality equipment at real prices. Though WebbCam does not gouge, bargain hunters and cheapskates will not find this a good place to shop. read more

There are not many photo equipment/suppliers in Philly, which makes it hard to really get a good price. Ok, lets be honest, place looks a lil creepy, but the staff are a great help. Price wise, yea you could get stuff cheaper on B&H but for used stuff, you'll find some serious gems. I bought a Canon 5d Mark 1 for $900. SUPER CLEAN, running through photos for the past year and nothing is wrong. They also threw in a couple extras like a camera strap and a cheap filter for my lens. However, I will never shop there again after my last visit. The owner has always had a condescending attitude that I could tolerate but after my last visit, I will never go there again. This review is for one purchase experience (I went in to buy some film). I knew what I wanted when I went in there and didn't really browse around (I did that online at their website before going to the store). They have a good selection of films (35mm and 120). I shoot only film so I'm grateful they carry it. They also stock paper, photo bags, tripods, filters, etc. Good to know if I need something in a pinch. I admit that on my way to the shop, I was primed to meet this caustic curmudgeon that people reference in the reviews. I did see him there - he has this... vibe about him. I was able to spot him right away (even though there were two staff people about the same age at the counter). I was helped by a far more customer-friendly gentleman. My experience was positive. BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY CAMERA STORE LEFT IN PHILADELPHIA. ok, so there's jack's up in the northeast and another shop in chestnut hill, but if you need camera service or equipment in center city, there is only one game in town, and that shop is webb cam. fortunately, webb cam is the best there is, outlasting even the mighty calumet and the numerous ritz camera centers that still have their signage throughout the city, like grave markers in a cameraless ghost town. john webb knows everything there is to know about cameras, and has a preference for nikons - which works for me as i've always been a nikon guy. but don't let that stop you canon fans, we all know that nikon vs. canon is like pat's vs. genos; at the end of the day, you're still eating a cheesesteak. or taking a picture. they sell plenty of canon gear as well. webb cam does sensor cleanings and will also repair your camera (or ship it out for you if it's under warranty.) they have a great used selection, and you can sell (or trade) your equipment towards stuff they're selling, new or used. there's a fair amount of "stuff" to look at in the store itself, including bags, filters, and gadgets. you can even get film here. imagine that, today in 2014. so support this little mom & pop on the corner of 12th & vine, otherwise you will be stuck with trying out cameras at best buy or at one of the many shady electronics stores on market or chestnut. read more

I'm so glad I found this place! I recently won a Fuji instant camera in a contest but they didn't send me any film with it. I knew I could find the film on Amazon, but I really wanted to find somewhere locally that I could buy it. After a quick Yelp search, I found Webb Cam which is a short walk from work. The store is packed with stuff on display, but still manages to feel open and not crowded at all. The two guys who were working there were so friendly and helpful, they quickly found the film I needed and had me all rung up and ready to go. The price they had listed on their website for the film was much higher than it was in-store so it was a nice surprise when I got the total. I have a Canon DSLR so I know I'll be back here in the future to check out lenses or take advantage of the in-store sensor cleaning. read more

They had all the materials ( batteries, film, Lens cap) to get the Camera up and running. Even offered some beginners fundamentals. A professional photographer referred this place since I was in the market for a real camera vs using my phone camera all the time. Since I cover a lot of fashion events in multiple cities Note 3 camera pics just won't do. I'm not a camera connoisseur but in I.T. so although I knew I wanted something for fashion photography, to capture good details as well as allow me to go wifi, I still didn't know which brand, model, type of camera etc. In comes John. Great guy. Extremely personable and knows his sh*t!!! He was very patient (I asked a LOT of questions lol) and even showed me how to use different models. In the end I invested in the Nikon D5300, 32 GB S Card and lens filters. The cam comes with a 18-140mm lens - perfect for runway shows and a newbie :-). Webb Cam also sells used cams, which I looked at as well but for the dollars and capabilities, it was best I go new. I'm happy. read more

This is the worst film/photo supply store I've been in. Its only in business because Philly doesn't have many others. The owner is not a happy person and when you enter the store you immediately feel unwanted. Also you can not make returns. There are rules that when combined eliminate returning basically everything sold in the store. The google reviews are spot on! Order off B&H, most times the delivery only takes a day. You can return it for 30 days and they actually want you to be satisfied with your order. This dinosaur at Webb Cam banks on one time customers only. read more

The owner, his name was John, older guy, assaulted me alongside the guy with red hair and a beard at the time, and they pushed me into the street and i almost got hit by a car, after selling me a lighting kit with a missing leg and trying to push a stand that wasn't the same model nor brand and looked like it was used for ten years, rusted and beatup and falling apart. I tried deescalating this as much as possible as they tried to hustle me, and the older guy follows me out the store, down the isolated hallway to the street as i leave and hes carrying two light stands as weapons and assaults me outside the store entrance. After i defended myself and a bystander came to check i was ok cause they saw it go down, i tried leaving, suddenly this young guy with ginger hair who was working flies out the door doesnt ask what happened and just started pushing me into the street, then the older guy gets up from sitting on the sidewalk and joins. Honestly scarring and I've talked to ex employees and ex customers in the area and they all got their stories about this older guy, the owner of the shop. honestly, stay away from this place. they can try to stay this didn't happen, i got the receipts and went to the police after. this happened years ago cause i didn't feel safe posting this until i got out of town. read more

I must have been a masochist by coming here. Unfortunately, Calumet closed down, and this is the ONLY place to buy camera equipment without taking the hike to NYC and shop at a real store like B&H or Adorama, or Allen's Camera in Levittown. The overall attitude of this place really made it easy for me to not come back. I could have handled the extra $300 price tag that they love to overcharge you with. If I am paying more than what other stores are selling, at least have some good customer service skills. They are just too condescending and unhelpful. For example, they like to shove alternatives down your throat, even if you know what you want to buy. There was also a time where I wanted a specific item that I spent days researching online. They simply ignored my request and tried to sell me some crap I know it was bad. In Calumet, they treated you like a customer. They will give you tips and offers for the item you wanted. They never treated me like an idiot, nor ever made me feel inferior compared to their "awesome" experiences as photographers. I say forget this place, and buy your gear on Amazon, B&H or Adorama. Even KEH sounds like a better idea than buying from this store. If Allen wasn't so far away, it would have been my new spot. Webbcam may be ideal for renting equipment, but it is not worth the headache. Besides, real photographers know someone who can borrow equipment. read more
