Hands down - the best place for people who want to buy creative, unique, high quality glasses. I've been buying boutique/luxury glasses for 25 years. I used to drive three hours to Nashville just to go to my favorite glasses place. Nowhere have I been has even come close to this store. First, the selection is phenomenal. I usually feel lucky if I find one pair that I really love that look good on me. I found several yesterday and I didn't even try on the whole store. So many options that you won't find anywhere else. They have strong statement glasses that are still sophisticated and they have more traditional styles that are unique and elevated. They all look expensive. And they are, but not more than other boutique places I've been to PLUS that gets me to my next point. Second, they take my VSP insurance which saved me half of what I would have paid at a boutique that doesn't (and many don't). Third, customer service is unparalleled. I'm used to having sales people hover around in glasses stores. There is no hovering here, only 100% helping. And they are good. The woman who helped me knew their stock and how to match frames with people outstandingly well. Normally, the fun for me is to "find that perfect pair," but she was so good that she would pull something out and say "try this" now "try this," and it was amazing having someone who got me, my face, and the glasses so well that nearly everything I put on looked great. It was so much fun. I ordered a pair, kept notes on several others I liked, and I cannot wait to get them back with my lenses. Do not go anywhere else if you prefer buying art for your face. Modern Eye is the best experience I have had, bar none. I want to pay particular attention to the help given to my wife today. She had an emergency need to get glasses as soon as possible, but her prescription is extra strong and rare. The staff knew all the ins and outs to give us all the options to ensure the fastest delivery time, as well as letting us know the trade-offs involved so she can make an informed decision. I was in the need for glasses for daily wear but, I did not have my eye exam here. Modern Eye is definitely the place for unique eye wear. But the prices of the frames ALONE which start at $99 and can go as high as $200, can be a enough to make you think twice. But I went to try on glasses to get a feel of what style would work for me. The only reason I purchased my frames from here was I have great vision insurance that greatly reduced the price. Besides the staff is sweet and very knowledgeable. I did not feel I was pressured in anyway and a staff member by the name of Pixie helped me for nearly 30 minutes to narrow down my choice of frames. I only had my glasses for three days and so far so good. All their lenses come with UV protection which was an option my eye doctor recommended. I have gone to Modern Eye for years. However , this time around it was impossible. It went on for months and still ongoing. The glasses were cut wrong , which they openly admitted. I was retested , new glasses and still to date can't see. I even had surgery for narrow angles, as the people at Modern eye said to wait. This was the last of 2 places i went. Both having screwed up my glasses for a lot of money. The people are so nice there and i just began to think i was crazy! I now own a pair of sunglasses i cant see out of, readers, i cant see out of to read, progressives i cant use and distance glasses that don't work. I just learned from friends who had the same issue. Management used to value their customers. Treat them as if they were long lost friends upon arrival. No more. Management seems disgruntled and tend to nickel and dime their loyal customers. The only positive experience about my visit was seeing Dr. Bryan. Professional, respectful, and continues to do a very thorough exam. I will continue to see the doc for annual eye exams, but will take my business elsewhere when purchasing new glasses. I had to order new lenses for my glasses post cataract surgery online due to covid-19 but was unable to focus either eye wearing them and struggling to read. (I have monovision post surgery which is great for every day , but..) I thought the optometrist, Dr. Chris, would think I was a nut case with my complaints. Instead, he nodded and went to work and, voila, I can see to read my ipad, knitting, and beloved books and the tv with both eyes focusing together now. I am over the moon. Seriously, y'all, the staff is hot. All of them. Even the doctor. AND they seem to know things about eyes and stuff. Anyway, I went in for an eye exam and contact lens fitting and everyone was great (and gorgeous). The eye exam went smoothly and both the person who walked me through the first few tests (peripheral vision and some other randoms) and the doctor (Dr. Brian) were super nice and informative (and cute). Dr. Brian walked me through my prescription and all and then commented that my current scrip on my glasses could probably be tweaked, but that if I wasn't having any problems with it, he saw no reason to mess with it. "You would adjust to it but only after two weeks of headaches and hating me, and who needs that?" Pretty much. Meanwhile I waited for my pupils to dilate and Dr. Brian suggested that I kill time by looking at frames, all the while knowing that I had no intention of buying new ones. He and some of the other (adorable) staffers brought out like twenty pairs both at their own suggestion and at my request and I basically got to play glasses dress up for like twenty minutes. Fun! And when a pair of frames that looked awesome in the case looked terrible on me both he and the (incredibly pretty) woman who was lending a hand assured me that they had never seen anyone look good in those frames. True? Who knows. Making me feel pretty good about it? Totally. Anyway, I'm probably going to order lenses with them, especially after going back for my complimentary contacts follow-up during which time (unusually nice-looking) doctor gave me another sample to take home just in case. "If you ever rip a lens or whatever and need an extra, definitely just come in and we'll set you up." I also wanted them to tighten one of the hinges on my glasses -- not a pair I bought with them -- and not only did they tighten all of the screws, they also cleaned them and gave me a little scratch-free case to carry them home (as I was wearing new sample contacts). I love my current frames but the second I feel a hankering for a new pair, I know where I'm going. An edit: I ordered contacts yesterday (same price as online, I checked even though they assured me this was so... because I'm paranoid like that) and got home to my messages today that they had arrived. My glasses have been held together with various types of superglue for over a month now. I figured it was time to invest in a new pair but had no idea where to go besides a certain blue mega mart. Mind you, I`ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of cat eye or slightly cat-ish glasses for a long time now and thought it would be nice to treat myself. After reading about Modern Eye on Yelp, I was excited to venture out from years of Wal-Mart optical and potentially find my perfect pair. I put an hour`s worth of quarters into the parking meter, expecting to be there a while trying on frames, but got out of there in about 25 minutes. It goes like this: I walked in and was immediately greeted by a gentleman, dude guy, who asked how he could help me. After briefly describing my cat eye hunt, he left suddenly and came back with frames, laying them on the counter for me to try. Oh, heaven. I fell in love with the third or fourth pair he picked out, and after staring at myself in the mirror with said pick, asked about prices. This is why I am giving Modern Eye three stars. After explaining my price range, his face went from something from mild excitement to just plain boredom. He mumbled something about "most people having expensive taste" and how if I found something I liked I could do a sort of lay-away plan by putting half of the amount down and paying the rest as I could. After that he ventured off again, but never came back around. I ended up doing the deposit thing with the frames, was rang up by someone else, and ended up paying for the frames within a week. The prices there can be pretty steep...mostly everything I tried on was up there. They do have an interesting selection, and I would go back again, after these break (won`t be for another five years at least, 500 dollars can buy you a car where I`m from.) I have to admit, I was a bit put off after I was treated and didn`t want to stay much longer. What went from an above average experience quickly went down hill, seemingly because I had mentioned looking for things more in my price range. Would I go back? Yes. It was a nice atmosphere, and looked like the Residents spewed everywhere. A note to that employee, don`t disregard a customer or not try to accomodate them because of the money. So what if I couldn`t pay that very moment? When you want something badly enough you find the money for it, which is business either way...and isn`t that the point? read more

I haven't gotten new glasses in almost 7 years. Needless to say, I was long overdue. The staff at Modern Eye made what could have been a painful experience, an awesome one. They did a lot of things right in my three trips there. First, they explained my insurance benefits to me about 10x better than the VSP website was able to. The doctor gave me trial contacts to test out, and a second pair of the kind I liked to tide me over until I bought boxes. And since I was alone picking out glasses, the staff helped me pick ones out to try on and gave me their opinions, even suggesting I step into the sunlight by the window to take a picture with my blackberry to show friends! I came away with a brilliant pair of Salt frames and crystal clear lenses. I just got them today, and I'm in love already. From start to finish, I was treated with not only respect, but with an open friendliness by everyone, including the fantastic doctor! I would be prepared to pay for premium frames if you go with Modern Eye, but the service and quality of the final product is so worth it. They were so accommodating and quickly ordered her a new frame so that they could be replaced. She is very dependent on her glasses and we were concerned that although we glued them together it would not hold. Why? they wrote me the wrong progressive prescription. My friend waited 3 weeks for her lenses to arrive. Modern Eye has elegant decorations, broad choices of frame (I think they have lots of special design from non-general brands), and nice shop assistants. When I was in elementary school and received my first eye exam, I was told I had the eyes of a fighter pilot. I had better than 20/20 vision through college. This has always been an exclamation point of pride with me for as long as I could remember, always conjuring up the image of me as a badass aviatrix with foxy goggles and one of those saucy leather hats with earflaps and a chin strap. Needless to say, when I started having constant eyestrain and experiencing chronic headaches and people suggested I ought to see an eye doctor, I got a bit uppity and indignant. Eye doctor--whatever for?? So it was in less than high spirits that I conceded and made my first appointment with Modern Eye. Once there, however, I forgot all about that. Everyone was super helpful and offered me a comfy seat and some coffee while I waited and vegged out reading magazines and looking through their awesome collection of vintage viewfinders. It felt more like a luxe parlor room than a sterile doctor's office. The exam itself was painless and went super quick. After they put in the eye drops and we were waiting for my pupils to dilate, I tried on tons of pairs of specs and the entire staff got really involved and excited about the decision-making process. I actually started to get pumped about getting glasses. Instead of a four-eyed freak maker, here was this new accessory that I was never before privy to. Kudos to them for making their customers feel that comfortable and also really confident about their purchases because of their sincere honesty about what works and what doesn't. I won't ever go anywhere else for eyewear and I've already referred three people that went there for new frames and the whole lot is happy. Maybe a hot horn-rimmed librarian can replace the jet jockey as my power animal... Side note: I'm not including the user experience of the website in my voting because Yelp is more about the in-store experience, but I'd like to mention that it would have helped to validate my new buy to see the pair I chose online afterward when my pupils weren't solid black like a bird of prey or early 90s goth wannabe. In the process of getting new glasses I had to go to Modern Eye 3 times. Every single time I went the experience was better than the last. The staff downstairs was funny, welcoming, honest and informed. I must have tried on 40 pairs of glasses and they stood with me through the whole ordeal throwing new specs in the mix and giving real opinions. The eye Dr. was also kind and welcoming and very funny; after my appointment he came downstairs and quickly joined in the fun of having me try on horrible looking specs totally intended for my 77 year old grandmother. Let me tell you a love story. Girl meets coworker, coworker becomes best friends with girl. Coworker and girl have a love for fine things, specifically sunglasses. They trade a pair of Marc Jacobs for another pair of Marc Jacobs and they skipped hand in hand to work flossin' their new glasses every day to work at the glitzy Coach store. Fast forward one year : Girl still wears these glasses until she simply can't see because it's too dark out. On a perfect sunny day, girl was riding to get lunch and lost them in an unfortunate battle of bike vs. motorcycle. She tries on all sorts of new glasses, but none had the love from the coworker of the past pair. Fast forward another year and a half: Girl walks into a shop that displays every pair of glasses you could imagine. Want to sport the elton john look? They gotchu. Love casting spells and need those round shaped potter glasses? Look no more. For me it was a case of love lost, and thank you to the fine sales people at Modern Eye- I was able to replace Marc with Oliver, as an Oliver Peoples. He hooked up with this girl Zooey Deschanel and they created a tortoise shell wayfarer style sunglass that I now wear everyday. Fantastic, professional service in a convenient location. There are always lots of people here to help you so I have never had to wait very long. The selection is pretty amazing and well-curated so there is no garbage to sort through. I visited for my annual eye exam. The exams take place upstairs and the office is comfortable for the most part. It's dark enough so that your dilated pupils don't have to suffer until you go outside. They offer great solar protection after, in the form of inserts if you wear glasses, or disposable sunglasses if you forget yours. I had a great experience here. I have one more visit to complete my contact lens fitting but I am really happy with Modern Eye. They have been extremely helpful helping me navigate the insurance nightmare as well. Even though I was just a passive observer in the process the staff here were determined to make my experience just as enjoyable and provided me with just as many frame options to play with even though it was clear there was no chance of money being spent. As eye doctors and frame shops go, this is the best I've ever been to hands down. Dr Bryan is so knowledgeable and his staff is so cool without a bit of pretense, that you will feel right at home. At my last visit they told me about a new kind of lens available to help correct halo's and glares that I was experiencing from a past laser surgery that was causing me to be unable to drive at night. I thought I would either have to live with this problem or go back and have another procedure to correct it, which was what my previous eye doctor recommended. I decided to give the new lenses a try and since I've gotten my new glasses, I have experienced a HUGE improvement with no surgery and considerably less cost. The staff also gave honest opinions about what frames best suited my face and helped me pick out a really amazing modern pair that make wearing the glasses even more fun. The folks at Modern Eye really had to work for this one. Not by any fault of their own, I just was one of those really picky/try-on-every-frame-in-the-store-and-still-not-buy-anything customers. I did that twice. And then I went to the University City location and did it again. Shame on me. Full time corrective lens wearing is a new thing for me, and I had a REALLY hard time finding frames that I felt comfortable wearing all the time. After much dismay, I decided contact lenses were probably my best bet and went in for my fitting. I had the pleasure of seeing both doctors, one for my original eye exam and another a few weeks later for my contact fitting. The entire staff is wonderful, patient and very accommodating to pain in the ass customers like myself. My prescription is light, so we talked about my options and what would work best with my insurance plan. After at least 5 or 6 separate visits (frame shopping, eye exam, contact fitting, contact recheck, etc) I ended up with both a nice new frame and contact lenses. I like having options. We billed my insurance for the glasses and I took my contact lens prescription home with me. They recommended I check contact prices online because I could probably find them cheaper, which I did. Bonus points for helping me save some cash. The frames themselves were pricey, but when it was all said and done I spent about the same as I would have on a cheap pair without the insurance.. and they're high quality designer frames that won't break in a few months. Staff: Honest, helpful, quirky (in a good way). It seems like everyone who works there is just at the store all the time hanging out with one another. No need for an appointment. I went to help someone pick out frames and my comments were frequently brushed off by the woman assisting. Except for her annoyance at some of my comments, she was nice and helpful. Staff did not seem discouraged in the search after trying on many many frames. Service: Strange that you could spend so much money on something and receive so little information on what you got. Nothing about the type of frames, the type of lenses, the guarantees of the store. Just a basic receipt that barely details anything. Spending so much money deserves a little more literature and assurance of the product that you are investing in. Product: Good. Overall: I would go back. But I would keep in mind that it is not the conventional eyeglass store environment where you can pick and choose. read more

I had an appointment here this week, and cannot say enough great things. I spoke with a few different people out front throughout my appointment, and everyone was extremely friendly and helpful. Despite being busy, everyone who helped me took a few minutes to chat and answer any questions. At the end of the appointment, when I had a few detailed questions about insurance, every detail was explained to me in detail until I had a good understanding. No rush. The actual appointment was also a great experience. The exam was thorough, all of my questions were answered, and I felt comfortable the entire time. I don't think I could have asked for a better experience. I've been wearing glasses since I was a young kid, and let me tell you the early nineties weren't a great time for ANYONE to be wearing glasses for the first time (Although recent trends show that hipsters entirely disagree with this. The bigger, the dorkier, the better). I have a severe phobia about wearing glasses in public, and I decided 25 would be the year that I cut all my crap... and did things that were GOOD for me. I knew wearing my contacts and not taking them out for over a month straight was, probably the worst thing I could do. So I went to Modern Eye.... The staff is incredible. I had no idea what I wanted and they started pulling so many different options for me based off of the few things I knew I wanted. They even pulled things entirely different than what I wanted, and thank god they did. I ended up with the cutest pair of cat-eyeish darker frames that make me look fantastic. They are such a fashion accessory that I doubt I will want to NOT wear them. I had a hard time taking them off. I can't wait to go pick them up from the store!! They were so helpful with all of my insurance information, and filling out reimbursement sheets... and Dr. Brian was phenominal. He really knew his stuff. I have a contact perscription of -6.00 and all of my other frames left me feeling as if I was looking through a fish bowl... he knew exactly how to remedy that. I truly felt as though I was in good hands. Again, I can't express how great of an experience this was, but I hope you find out for yourself. Anyone that is afraid of wearing glasses in public, I promise they will make it so fun, you will get over it in a heartbeat! read more
