I was concerned about a breast lump and requested a mammogram from Dr. Wear. He told me I did not need one. The conversation became tense, and I insisted on the screening anyway. Fortunately, my insurance approved the request, and the mammogram revealed that I had Stage II BRCA1-related breast cancer. When I returned to Dr. Wear to obtain a referral to an oncologist, he remarked, "Good thing we got that mammogram." That comment was deeply troubling, given that I had to advocate strongly for the test in the first place. Had the cancer not been detected at that time, the outcome could have been very different. BRCA1-related breast cancer is known to be aggressive, and in 2010 treatment options and prognostic understanding were more limited than they are today. I am grateful that my treatment at City of Hope was successful, and I thank God for that outcome. Patients should feel heard and supported when they raise serious health concerns. I set an appointment with Richard Wear for a strep test. In the intake, I told him I get strep a couple times a year and needed a note to take time off. He actually laughed in my face, and refused to do a strep test because 'adults almost never get strep'. After I pressed the issue, he finally conceded. While administering the test he stated it was 'pointless'. When he told me the strep test came back positive, I decided to switch doctors. I feel grateful that I wasn't as impacted by his lack of attention to detail as some of the other reviewers. read more

Worst mistake my mother ever made was seeing Dr. Richard Wear. During her first office visit, Dr. Wear told my mother that she had pancreatic cancer. This diagnosis was made without blood work or any imaging. My mother went to this fateful appointment directly from work. She was alone and terrified. Dr. Wear immediately admitted my mother into the hospital for a CT scan, additional imaging and testing. (All could have been completed in an outpatient setting.) During the initial office visit, my mother had informed Dr. Wear that she had type II diabetes. That same evening when my mother was admitted to the hospital, Dr. Wear ordered a CT scan with contrast. As a universal precaution, it is medically known not to order contrast if the patient is diabetic because it can cause nephrotoxicity. Well, guess what? My mother developed nephrotoxicity from the contrast which led to rapid kidney failure resulting in her death six weeks later. She never returned home after that initial office visit. (Her initial hospital bloodwork, which was taken before the CT scan with contrast, showed that her kidney's were normal and functioning properly.) This insensitive quack with his misdiagnosis was the reason for my mother's demise. On her death certificate (signed by Dr. Wear) it stated her cause of death was cancer. Cancer was never detected and definitely never confirmed. Cancer was never indicated or traced in any of her bloodwork. I am sure there's a special place in hell for this cold diabolocal bastard. Believe me, there's so much more to tell. (I still have all of her imaging film, bloodwork results, doctor's and chart notes to this day.) When my mother died, I sent all of her information (film and everything) to a specialist who was scheduled to see my mother the very day that she passed. After reviewing her imaging film, bloodwork results, and the doctor's notes, the specialist recused himself and advised me to seek a plaintiff attorney. My personal experiences with Dr. Wear have been positive, not negative. He's very personable, he made an effort to get to know me, he was a good listener, he was thorough, he was very professional and well groomed, nice bedside manor, and very informative. He took the extra time to ask about allergies and recommend a treatment for them and a website that offers special mattress and pillow coverings for allergy sufferers. There are some doctors that emit a warm and fuzzy and talkative vibe just naturally. Okay, so maybe he's not warm and fuzzy at first. But he does make an effort and you get what you give. I find him to be very good. I would recommend him. His nurse was friendly also but perhaps low key. I don't need chatty, intrusiveness when I go to the doctor so they both suit me fine. It's been a number of years since my last physical. They would normally do this at my old company so I had to find a new location. This healthcare location came recommended so I called them and got an appointment with Doctor Wear. 65 N Madison is a tricky place to find but look for the large parking lot. As I quizzically looked around security smiled and asked if I'm looking for 65 north Madison. "You get a lot of people with puzzled looks right?" He laughed. "Yeah. A lot" The receptionists were very polite and helpful. Reception is clean and modern. No moldy carpets and 70s decor here. Doctor Wear himself was very warm and friendly. Carrying a touchscreen laptop, he took down my details, walked me through all of the tests he was going to perform and put me at ease. I actually like the doctor, but the office staff is insensitive and they make too many mistakes. At least once, they made an appointment with me but didn't record it, causing double booking. Another time, they rejected a request for refills because they said I was due for an appointment. But I actually did the appointment two months prior, and had to convince the office nurse to check for it again. I started to withdraw from the medication I had been taking for years, until they finally got on the ball. You get that usual rushed feeling, as the doctor seems overbooked. They add on additional charges for certain paperwork and don't validate parking. A big money grab. At least the doctor seems to be current with technology, using a laptop and getting subscriptions to the pharmacy electronically, and such.. read more

I don't feel great about not writing a nice review, so I will say only this. Go ANYWHERE ELSE. I'm fortunate enough to be extremely healthy and only needed a regular check up/papsmear. The nurse working with Dr. Wear and Dr. Wear himself, NOT the warmest or personal. Also, if you're going for a pap, he STickS his finger in your ASS. I get a check up every year and can go anywhere, I will DEFinitely Go Elsewhere next time and would recommend you do the same. I've been seeing Dr. Wear for a few years now. At the time, I was doctor hopping trying to figure out some chronic back pain I was having. I had doctors recommend a new mattress(which I purchased, twice), sleep a specific way(which I tried), take aspirin, exercise less(no problem), exercise more(this one I ignored), etc... I was tired and frustrated of seeing doctors, and I knew something was wrong with my back. Within five minutes of sitting down with Dr. Wear he had figured out I had Ankylosing Spondylitis. One DNA test later and sure enough, I had the genetic marker. Dr. Wear then told me about what the prognosis was, ways to treat, etc... After a short conversation he recommended I try taking a single Aleve before I go to bed. Words cannot describe how happy I was after I woke up that first morning and had no pain. I nearly cried. Years later, this chronic disease barely effects me, and I have Dr. Wear to thank for that. I believe this experience wraps up Dr. Wear perfectly. His bedside manner is succinct and to the point. He's not going to ask you about work, your last vacation, etc... Honestly, I prefer it this way. I'd rather have a spot-on doctor than a therapist. That said Dr. Wear is a very busy doctor, and it's rare to get more than ten minutes of his time. His office is always slammed with people, and while I love his nurse, his support staff leave a lot to be desired. Overall, seeing Dr. Wear is worth the hassle, and I definitely recommend him... if you can actually manage to schedule a visit. read more

It started seeing Dr. Wear 4 months ago. I would say he is the best doctor, I have seen till now. He is so attentive, listens you carefully and writes down all of your problems, so that he has your history. Once I wanted to see him, but got an appointment one month later. I had to travel, so wanted to see him urgently. I called his assistant and she said that Dr. Wear could call you and then you can tell him your issue. Dr. Wear called me, I talked to him about my problem, and he said come tomorrow morning. Let's not wait for a month. Well, what others are saying are quite true about this doctor. At first he seem alright and then he flips on you like a coin. He seem like he has no patiences and belittles you. If it wasn't for the fact that I got the referral I needed, I would definitely switch this guy out. I asked him for a particular specialist that I have been seeing for the past 8 years, but instead of acknowledging it, he said we have to ask the insurance and they will determine if I'm approved. Which I understand, but when I tried to explain to him which doctor he immediately got angry and made typing gestures at me and said "we have to type the referral request not write it, so wait." He might be a good doctor but he has no patiences for his patients. This guy needs to take a vacation or something to relax. If you are considering him, take heed. read more

I've been with Dr. Wear about 20 years. My health is excellent so not too much for him to do. But he's a capable, highly professional GP. Stanford Medical School. All his notes go directly into the computer. He keeps up with trainings and innovations. He understands preventive medicine. I do agree with other critiques that the staff in the center could be more outgoing. However these are busy people and they really don't have time to hand-hold as much as people did in the past. The folks who left 1 star (negative) reviews have an ax to grind. Maybe they are bringing other personal issues to the table. This Dr. is clearly a pro, and also the office staff. read more

I did quite a bit of research to choose Dr. Wear. He went to a great medical school and is the head of the internal medicine group at Healthcare Partners. He's not going to give you antibiotics for a sore throat to shut you up unless there is evidence for a bacterial infection since viruses don't respond to antibiotics. He is a REAL doctor. I highly recommend him. I just hope he doesn't retire since there are too many quacks around here. He isn't one of them. He practices evidence based medicine which is grounded in good science. read more

He's a good listener and he remembers what's going on with me even when I haven't seen him recently. I've always found him to he very professional and knowledgeable. I would agree with Trevor. I've been going to Dr. Wear for several years and have had nothing but positive experiences. Not only do I find him very comfortable to discuss my health issue with, he provides me with good information and I generally walk out knowing more than when I walked in. He is persistent about my followup and compliance with his recommendations but he is never pushy. And, very importantly, when I needed to go the hospital, even though he was was not available, a member of the practice covered for him and she knew me and did not treat me like a stranger!!! Yes, the office could be more warm and personable, but what office couldn't use a little help in that area. I don't really care about that stuff, it's the care I am interested in. My husband, my self and my mother have all gone to Dr. Wear. He is impersonal, judgmental and doesn't follow through. After his insults and not getting to the root of the issues my husband and I have had, we moved on. My poor mother has remained with him and he is awful to her!!! If you're looking for an impersonal doctor - who does things by the numbers checking off who knows what on his computer; provides poor after visit follow-up preferring that you check your lab results electronically; and a front office that is rude and inefficient - then you have found the doctor for you. I was willing to tolerate both believing I was in relatively good health and that I simply needed a primary physician to monitor my hypertension. However, after my annual check-up Dr. Wear failed to alert me to a major medical condition. Fortunately, out of curiosity, I checked my blood tests and found an anomaly that I had to bring to the doctor's attention. I was told "...we would check it in three months." Concerned, I made an appointment with a specialist and learned that I had lost over 50% use of a major organ and had developed a chronic disease. Highly displeased by Dr. Wear's lackadaisical approach to my medical well being I have found a new primary physician. It would be socially irresponsible of me to recommend Dr. Wear to anyone looking for a primary care physician. read more

The Dr is ok. The office however is the worst functioning office I can remember visiting. The hours are 9-12 and 2-5. There is no voicemail so if you need something, you have to call between those hours only. So then when you do call, you are put on hold for a long time. My record hold time is 14 minutes. That may not seem long when you're talking to the cable company but to call my local doctor, I think it's outrageous. I can drive there faster. This has been my experience at least 5-7 times so I know I'm not just catching them on an off day - it's just the way things work there. One time I just needed simple paperwork done so I stopped in because I couldn't get them on the phone. The receptionist messaged the doctor/nurse (not sure which one) and I sat there. 35 minutes later, no one had answered her message so I left. I am in the process of leaving that office and getting a new doctor. Also, the facilities are really pretty old. It' doesn't bother me a ton but the difference between that office and other offices are pretty drastic. My recommendation: go somewhere else. Please. Save yourself the headaches and hassle and send them a message that the need to shape up their office. read more
