My eyeglasses are 1920's, vintage, and plated with 20 carat gold. This makes them delicate, flexible and vulnerable. Imagine how I felt when a thuggish former neighbor struck me breaking the nose pad off these rare frames. She's been evicted* but the problem remained: how to repair a very old, very fragile eyeglass frame more senior than many buildings here in San Francisco. Enter We Care Optical. On a hunch I decided to phone call them and a second optician, but the optician at We Care went one step further than his competitor and asked me to please text him photos of my beloved Lennon-Gandhi frames. I did. A few moments passed, then the good news came back by text: "I have the nosepads for these frames." I set up an immediate appt and drove over to Mason and went in. As a former New Yorker, I want to add that his shop and its surrounding alcove are... just... so reminiscent. Like so much of SF. With the expertise, care and speed -- and confidence -- of a master, veteran eyeglass technician, the owner operator, a quiet, focused and very skilled gentleman named Mr. Cho, bent, examined my glasses carefully a few moments then set to work. He knew just what pads they needed, the tools flew in his hands like birds' wings, and in less than a quarter hour he had two perfect new nosepads attached and my eyeglasses, cleaned by him meticulously as I watched, were then handed back to me, and they fit accurately as if brand new. If you own eyeglasses you care about, don't waste any time anywhere else. This is the shop to come to. Mason's parking is ample but watch out for one of the meters, located in front of 349: it is nonworking for credit cards and as of July 2025 will only accept coins. It is to Mr. Cho's incredible credit there were only 11 minutes available to purchase on the nonworker meter -- but he fixed my vintage 1920's eyeglasses in under that time. Let that sink in. *For those curious, I was struck in the face by the thug because I politely asked one of her "hairstyle" clients to please keep their extremely loud phone conversation down. I knew the hinge couldn't be fixed and it would need to be glued, which I agreed to, but this was a very sloppy glue job. I could've done the same at home. Borderline scam artist. Terrible experience and I am honestly baffled that there are so many glowing reviews. I wonder if any of the happy customers had a more complicated sunglass repair like I did? My repair was not done well - but it was how We Care Optical handled the situation afterwards that led to this review. My sunglasses had one of the metal leg hinges snap off. Timeline: Friday afternoon - We Care Optical says they can fix it. I pay $55. I receive sunglasses back - the 'fixed' hinge basically looks like someone dumped a bucket of glue all over it. Fine, they are the experts, let's see if the repair holds up. Saturday - I don't use the glasses Sunday evening - I try to wear them for the first time and the 'fixed' hinge snaps immediately Monday - I take them back to We Care Optical. I show them what happened. I bring up that they probably never fixed it right to begin with, so just refund me if you can't fix it. *He DOES NOT take this well.* He immediately accuses me of roughhousing them and breaking them again. Dude, come on - they broke 2 days after your 'fix.' I have timestamped evidence. He insists that his fix was great and it's my fault. He won't do anything about it. Summary - Come here if you want to light your money on fire, be berated in front of other customers, and told to kick rocks. DO NOT COME HERE if you have complex sunglass fixes that you actually want to be fixed. Because they will mess it up, and if you require any kind of follow-up - even if it's their fault - you will not have a good time. Customer service less than 0 stars. read more

I visited We Care without any expectations and a bag full of glasses that needed work: repair of arms with missing screws, nose bridge repair, trifocals that I never used, etc. Much of what I wanted would have an optician in my Cow Hollow/Marina neighborhood turn up their noses. Joseph Cho at We Care fixed everything, charging nothing for the small repairs, for which he found parts in a variety of boxes that he searched. I paid for converting my trifocals to bifocals, resetting my SwissFlex lenses into better, less fragile frames. I could go on...but suffice it to say that Mr. Cho was an old-school San Francisco business, tucked into the back of a parking garage lobby, and for me a great find. read more

The arm hinge on my favorite pair of glasses broke off, and about 4 different eyewear shops told me they wouldn't be able to fix it, they'd have to ship it off elsewhere to be fixed, or it would cost about $200 to fix.‍ One shop recommended I try We Care Optical instead. My glasses were fixed in about 2 days only, with a clean, seamless repair. Cost $38, but the new hinge is even stronger and sturdier than the original. Protect Joe at all costs! I bought an expensive pair of designer prescription eyeglass frames several years ago from my optometrist. They were probably $500+. The metal frame eventually broke and my optometrist couldn't fix them. The designer brand also couldn't fix them. I didn't want these frames to go to waste, so I brought them to Joe and hoped for the best. He was able to solder the metal frames back together and I can finally use them again (for only $68)! This little mom and pop shop is a hidden gem which I wish I had discovered years ago. The proprietor (super nice guy) can fix any frame, and can make any lenses fit to any frame (as long as the lenses are not too small). I will only come here from now on when I need repairs. Plus, he has a huge assortment of frames, a lot of which are old school, which is great for me, because I like oval/cat eye frames, which are hard to find among the square-angle frames which have taken over the industry. I've needed to resort to online shopping for the last few years, but I found a pair here without even trying. Highly recommend. read more

The best place to fix the glasses in SF! My mother's glasses broke and we went to various places with unfavorable results. Glasses broke in such a way that nobody could fix it. Amazing local business! Joseph is the best. He's helped me preserve my favorite sunglasses and pair of glasses that I've had for 4+ years. The hinges broke on my sunglasses and he replaced them, as well as the temples (the side things that go over your ears) that I had that broke off. He took apart one of his frames that had compatible temples that I liked and fitted them on. It was great. I would've had to buy new sunglasses for $300+ it was such a lifesaver. And I love my sunglass frames!!! I had to get a pair of Warby Parker glasses adjusted because they don't have nosepads (they're just plastic and I have a very narrow low bridge) and Warby Parker suggested I ship them to some shop in Sacramento and wait a couple of weeks... was so glad to hear that Joseph could do it for only $40! Which was cheaper than what Warby Parker quoted me. The other people on here who are complaining about cost must not live in San Francisco and understand how expensive stuff is here. It is amazing to be able to go to Joseph and just get anything fixed. He also noticed another pair of my glasses was a bit bent out of shape and he went ahead and fixed it for me for free. He also maintained my sunglasses - one of the hinges had come loose and he put in a washer and tightened it. This review is for all my Asian people out there (you know who you are) who fall in love with a pair of sunglasses, only to have them sit awkwardly/uncomfortably on your cheeks. Have no fear, Joseph is here to help! I went to Solstice Sunglasses to use a Gilt City deal and was instantly enamored with a pair of Kate Spade glasses. Unfortunately, they rested on my cheeks. The fella working there suggested I buy them and then go to LensCrafters to have them put nose pads on them. He said it'd work and would only cost about $10 more. Head over to LensCrafters only to have the guy tell me they don't do that on plastic frames. He then slipped me a business card for We Care Optical. When I got there, Joseph took a close look at the frames and how they looked on my face. He then showed me that he'd have to shave off some of the plastic in order to get the pads in. Flash forward about 45 minutes and $45, and I have a lovely pair of new glasses that fit perfectly! No sliding down my face or fogging up because they're too close to my face. We Care Optical was recommended by a friend at work, and it's amazing. The interesting gentleman running the business pointed out several reason why my D&G frames were poorly designed and they all made sense. I broke the clear plastic wire that holds the bottom of the lens up to the frame and brought them in. He is a touch aggressive with the lenses (tosses it on the counter, this guy is built for speed). Simply asking him to be careful might help a little bit. He fished out a new wire, put it in and the lens still didn't fit quite right (I've had these bad boys for several years, bending occurred overtime). He grabbed this solution that created additional padding around the lens, let it dry for five minutes and they are as good as new. I was expecting a $40 / $60 bill for all the techniques he employed, however he gave me a bill for $18 dollars. This might have been one of my most random places to attempt tipping. read more

I've broken my frames nearly fire or six times in the past few years, and I am so thankful for this place. It might be because I know the route by heart, since every time I go, sight is an unreliable option. It might be because, after suffering the tragic loss of one's spectacles, I know that if I can find my way there, I can go from tragically helpless to oh-my-god-thank-you-I-can-see-again in about five minutes. I've found that no matter what your lens shape is, if your frames are broken, they can fit them into a new frame. I don't wear Prada glasses or anything like that, I just need them to, you know, be on my face so that I can see. And if you understand the feeling of going from inoperable to functional just like that, you cannot overvalue this place. I would recommend it for tourists, especially; it's properly located downtown (kind of hidden behind the Hertz rental garage -- just ask someone) and no one wants to see a blurry Golden Gate Bridge. read more

I went to We Care Optical to have my glasses fixed as the temple broke off at the hinge. I can't resonate with the other reviewers as I did not have a positive experience. The owner looked at my Oliver People frames (I had glued the hinge so I could wear my glasses in the interim as they are my only pair). Before he even started, he was quick to absolve himself of all liability and pointed out scratches on my frame and then says $42 and to come back in 30 mins. He took my phone number down so he could call if there were any issues. I had informed him when I arrived that this was my only pair and I was really hoping for his help to fix them. At $42 for 30 mins of work, I was expecting the best and left confident that he would deliver. When I returned, he tells me he had to improvise on the screws. Oliver People's frames have screws that are visible that connect the frame to the temple at the hinge. - he replaced them with smaller screws. On the inside at the hinge, he welded the screws onto the frame. Then he proceeds to say his work is guaranteed when he could have simply called me to run it by me before he decided to deform my frames. I just wished he had glued it back instead of removing and replacing the screws. He adjusted my frame to my face and pretty much dismissed me when I told him they felt crooked. The frames still don't sit well on my bridge and I found scratches on my lenses that were not there before. To say I was disappointed is putting it mildly, I felt he smelled my desperation and took advantage of it. Customers beware - make sure you know what he is going to do before you leave your glasses with him. read more

I sat on my Salt glasses and snapped the arm off at the metal hinge. I called and visited different optical shops and none could do the fix in house. Two of the shops recommended Joseph at We Care and I was able to call him next day and text pics to see if he could do the job. He said he could! Offered to wait 15 minutes past closing so I could make it in from work. Said he would have it done within a 36hr turnaround time but finished it within less than a day. The price was very reasonable compared to other mail in options. I just picked them up. The front part that you can see looks fine, the inside cosmetically is obviously patched but they fit perfectly. Hopeful that they hold up over time. Long overdue post! This place is a gem! My glasses broke in half but the lenses were intact, so I went to my regular eye doctor to see what they can do. The model was discontinued (I searched online too) and they said that I could not get a frame that fit the lenses, even though the lenses were not broken. So basically I would need to get new frames and lenses?? I failed to believe that there were no frames to fit the lenses, so my research led me to We Care Optical. I called and gave him the frame model and the gentleman said that he may have similar frames to fit. It worked out, and he even gave me a deal for another pair of frames. He was very helpful and quick to fix my glasses. Walked out of there happy with two frames! If you need to add nose pads to your eyeglasses come here. I have a very Asian nose. That's what I feel like when I try on glasses. My glasses sit on my cheeks and tend to fog up quickly. So after buying a new pair of glasses the store recommended I go to We Care Optical. I think my Lyft ride took longer than Joseph needed to add the nose pads. Now I am one happy camper (that can see for miles). The price is $60 if paying by credit card and comes w free adjustments.
