I attended the grand opening of the newest Wawa to the Chantilly/South Riding VA area! It was such…read morea great vibe. Starting early, I arrived about 7:30am to join the small line already formed in front of the store. The first 100 customers were guaranteed to receive a free Wawa t-shirt. The staff offered music, free hot chocolate (it was a little chilly but not too bad), and branded noise clappers. Special guest and dance partner, Wally, made an appearance to help warm the crowd up. Staff, community leaders, LCSO and Fire-Rescue joined in to help make this event successful. At 8:00am, Wawa leaders thanked the crowd for coming out before the official countdown, opening the doors to the newest Wawa in the area. Fully stocked and ready for the hundreds of free coffee offered. For the opening week, Wawa offered free hot coffee and discounted snacks and drinks. Of course the store was clean and in its best condition. Staff was full of smiles and greeted each customer individually. I opted for free coffee and a slushie (which was only $1.05 for the grand opening). At 8:30, community leaders welcomed the staff and customers by saying a few words. To close out the ceremony, the Sheriff's Office and Fire-Rescue teams had a friendly hoagie battle. Each team had to create hoagies, and who ever created the most at the end of two-minutes, won! Fire-Rescue won, departing with a huge trophy. Both teams took their hoagies back to work (which was awesome). If you are looking for a Wawa closer than Air and Space or Oakgrove, this is the location for you. It's a smaller footprint, but they offer all the goodies Wawa is famous for.

Lately, bagging has become a competition as to how much can be packed in one bag. I bring tons of my own bags so my only ask is safe packing. Let me say I don't mind packing my own things. But if baggers do it, please ensure they are packing things safely. I've had more than one instance where my eggs were placed underneath canned goods, cleaning products with fruit/veggies and all glass in one bag. They were polite, helpful, and explained that the issue was simply that the system could not scan the type of ID I had. Unfortunately, the customer service manager--or whoever the larger woman working in the customer service room was--is a completely different story. I was trying to purchase DayQuil, and I didn't have my physical ID with me. That was my mistake. I normally carry my government-issued mobile ID now, but I now understand that Harris Teeter does not accept mobile IDs for this type of purchase. At that point, the situation could have ended with a simple, "Sorry, but we don't accept mobile IDs." I then found another DMV document I had with me and asked the woman in customer service if it was something I could use. Instead of simply getting up and addressing my question, she responded from her chair with a very snarky and confrontational attitude. She started calling several other employees over, asking what I was trying to purchase and what was going on. I told the other employees I was trying to buy DayQuil. She then, still from the back of the customer service area, very confrontationally said, "No." I simply said, "Okay, I'll come back later if I can get my physical ID." At that point, she continued calling other employees over to check the situation, to the point where it felt like I wasn't even being allowed to simply leave and come back another time. I had no problem with being told that my ID could not be accepted. That is completely understandable. What I did have a problem with was the attitude and the unnecessary escalation of what should have been a very simple interaction. Every other employee handled the situation perfectly and simply explained, "Sorry, our system just can't scan that type of ID." That's all it needed to be. I hope Harris Teeter management takes the time to properly train whoever is managing the customer service area box room on how to de-escalate situations and communicate with customers professionally. A customer asking a simple question should not turn into a confrontation or a power struggle. Again, the other employees were great. This review is specifically about the way this particular customer service manager handled the interaction.
