Located near the…read moreentrance to the lovely Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden, it is a small nursery, but offers a very nice selection of plants (check the Grow Native Nursery inventory website on Thursday evenings to get an updated list of available plants). The volunteer staff are amazing and quite knowledgeable. They can help you pinpoint which plant will suit your garden needs. The plants would fare well enough in cooler temps, but then came summer, with its perpetual dilemma with first year native plants - to water, or not to water: this is the question. Either I water and instant death or I don't water and lingering death. But amazingly, this year all of the hybrids I bought from this nursery have not just survived, but thrived. Admittedly, the copious amount of rain last year helped get the plants off to a great start. But I also credit their success to advice I received from a man working in the nursery, last name Chambers, according to my receipt. He suggested I plant the Trichostema so that the top of the plant was about an inch above the surrounding soil with a reservoir around the plant to collect water and bring it down to the plant's roots. He also told me I could water the plant weekly, even in the summer, as long as I watered before 9 a.m. And voilà, this year, I have a beautiful, small hedge of Trichostema hybrids. So thank you, Mr. Chambers and Grow Native Nursery for quality plants and advice!
