Salmon cakes and scrambled eggs with hashbrowns.
Gene T.

I came here for breakfast on a stormy Tuesday morning. I got there as they were opening and chose a table by the window with a fantastic view of Lake Michigan. The waitress greeted me with a smile and asked if I wanted coffee. As I sipped on the coffee and browsed the menu, I enjoyed a nice view of an angry lake splashing on the shore. I decided on the Salmon Cakes Benedict. This is two grilled house-made salmon cakes topped with poached eggs and lemon dill hollandaise, served with hashbrowns. I opted for scrambled eggs instead of poached and the hollandaise sauce on the side. This was not a problem. The salmon cakes were excellent. Soft, moist, and packed with flavor, these cakes needed very little sauce. I'm glad I ordered the sauce on the side. The eggs were cooked perfectly and complimented the salmon cakes nicely. The hashbrowns were griddle fried with a slight char. This breakfast was worth coming back for.

This restaurant is located inside the Lighthouse Inn. The decor seems to be a little outdated, but for an older hotel, it fits. We stopped in for breakfast. There were a few people inside, and we were seated right away. There are large windows with awesome views of Lake Michigan, so we were treated to a great view. Upon reviewing the menu, I decided on the omlet special. This included a cheese omlet, hashbrowns, and toast. After a while, our food came out, and everything looked so good. The omlet was fluffy, and the cheese was gooey and melted perfectly. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy. My only complaint was that the toast was soggy, like it wasn't in the toaster long enough. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. The views are great and the service was good. We will be back to try other menu items.

French onion soup hit the spot on a warm summer day. Perfect on a cold winter's eve.

During our visit to Manitowoc my husband and I wanted to eat where the locals enjoy good food. He saw the Water's Edge Restaurant the first day we arrived. We were there for lunch on our second day. I enjoyed the decor. It brought back memories of eating out as a child of the 70's and 80's. The decor may be dated, but the restaurant was clean. Which in my book is more important. We went with a recommendation on Yelp. We split a patty melt with homemade chips and the French Onion soup. Everything was delicious! My husband even commented- "You ate the pickle spear. You never eat the pickle spear." Our server was wonderful! She was very attentive and helpful with any questions we had. Several reviews mentioned not being satisfied with the service due to various reasons. We did not experience any issues during our 1:00ish Tuesday afternoon lunch. It is my understanding this is a local family owned and operated business. During today's craziness I encourage all of us to choose to support these type of local businesses.

Ambience - 5 stars Food - 3 stars Fine dining places seem sparse in this area, and the Lighthouse Inn's dining room with its compelling view of Lake Michigan beckons to hungry travelers seeking something more substantial than fast food. We stopped here for dinner on a stormy night and observed a very turbulent Lake Michigan hurling whitecaps just a few feet from our table (watch a brief video clip here: https://youtu.be/Yx1MhKNTRkM). This family-owned hotel and restaurant date to the early '70s, but the place is spotless and well maintained, and the 2-level dining room with its nautical trappings and stunning view is attractive and romantic. The menu selections and descriptions sound promising, but execution is closer to diner than fine dining. I ordered their signature dish, "Great Lakes Parmesan Baked Whitefish," which the menu describes as "Great Lakes whitefish drizzled with lemon and Chablis, topped with savory seasonings and shredded double-aged Parmesan cheese." My entree was okay but it did not taste freshly prepared. My Missus ordered the braised beef short rib. It was tender and juicy, but on the bland side. Salad and rolls (included) were very good. The next time we dine here, my inclination would be to ask the server what's freshly prepared.

Easter fiasco

I had the extreme misfortune to have Easter lunch there today. My brother took me and I was embarrassed for him and outraged at the exorbitant price for the extremely poor quality food which we were served. I had asked for the two piece chicken and only received one piece. ($18). I was thankful about this as it was as dry as the Atacama Desert and as tough as tanned cow hide and no pleasant taste or flavor. The sage so over powered the dressing that you seemed to forget that it was a pile of pasty mush, that coupled with the equally cold mashed potatoes and even colder extremely small bowl of uncooked vegetable mess that was missing the promised cheese sauce which would have possibly given them the only flavor they might have had. We were given three completely dried out rolls with no butter. Really? At this price! The meal included a paltry salad bar which when we went through, we had to scrape the bowl to get even a few leaves of white wilted lettuce. The rest of the containers were equally empty and so I'm not sure what was in the three containers in this unbelievably sparse so called "salad" bar. And to top off this over priced fiasco, one large plate with four diminutive squares cut from some bars was served for what they were calling desert for the both of us. Not plated on individual plates. We were both supposed to eat off just one plate? We didn't even do that at home growing up. What kind of establishment does this? This whole meal was one gigantic joke. I had to walk on when my brother paid as I was fuming for him to have paid so much for this inedible swill. This was my first (and last!) time at this place. You only get one time for a first impression and I do not think there would have been any way that you could have made a worse one!

What an adorable little place! I absolutely loved the harbor theme inside. Lots of fun decor that really fit. The view from our breakfast table was breathtaking. I'm not from the area, but was visiting with a friend over the weekend and she let me pick our brunch spot. I ordered the country biscuit platter, which came with 2 eggs and 2 biscuits with gravy. The gravy was very obviously homemade, and tasted delicious! The biscuits were flaky, and the eggs were scrambled to my liking. Overall a very fun place and if I am back in the area for breakfast I plan to return.

Nice personal touch to the beautiful view! Looks like a family owned restaurant with some Wisconsin goodies.

We really liked it, had clam chowder and it was great. Then the salad was fine and dressings homemade and yummy. We ordered the meatloaf which came with root vegetables and both super tasty. We also had stuffed sole and it was fresh and delicious. Green beans are fresh and not canned a very pleasant surprise. Service was fast, friendly and attentive. After reading reviews we lowered our expectations but came anyway. Monday lots of places are closed so we came here. Very happy with our meal and service. I have to go 5 stars. Excellent view also. Would recommend and return again.

Grizzly's Pub and Grill - Smoked Prime rib steak with a grill finish: yum!

Grizzly's Pub and Grill

Checked Yelp and read up a bit on Grizzly's; sounded interesting place…read more I was a bit confused with 2 Grizzly's but that was cleared up once we arrived. This is our type of bar/grill. We sat at the bar and quickly waited on by Darrel who is bartender and owner. There was a specials list for the weekend, New York strip; ribs and prime rib. The prices are a little high but what we seen the servings almost justified the price. We weren't quite as hungry to justify a steak or rib; thus we went with a side salad and chicken steak/w side salad. The salad was decent size and the chicken was covering over 1/2 the plate. My wife had just a salad. The chicken was tender and seasoned well. The sauce is a secret sauce of the bar! Drinks were good and priced well. While we were there I seen an order of ribs by a patron; they did look really good and by what I could tell he liked them but he couldn't eat them all. A patron sitting next to us ordered the prime rib; its smoked prime rib and flash finished over the grill that doesn't affect the finished doneness. It was huge at about 1" thick and done perfectly inside to the patrons delight. It's $40 but probably won't finish it all. Definitely when in the area will stop back.

A last minute trip to Manitowoc around dinner time had me needing to pick up something before…read moreheading back home. The Fat Seagull ended up being my choice because of interesting sounding items on the menu. The to go order consisted of a perch sandwich, a double cheeseburger, mozzarella sticks, and taco egg rolls. The mozzarella sticks are the same kind you can get from Arby's or the hot deli area of Walmart. Yes they are mozzarella sticks and can maybe satisfy a craving if needed, but they're not as good as Italian breaded for wonton wrapped mozzarella sticks. I'm not usually a big fan of charbroiled burgers and I could tell the meat was out of a frozen box of patties, but it was a solid tasting burger. It didn't come with a side, which for the price I assumed was the case ($7.50 as of 2/3/2025). That might be the most I would pay for it, but would consider getting it again. Like the burger, the perch sandwich did not come with a side, so $10 for a single butterfly of perch on a roll was close to my wallet's limit, but that was a tasty piece of fish. I don't find myself in Manitowoc often, but if I did I'd be intrigued by their double perch plate on Fridays given the quality of the the perch in this sandwich. The star of the meal was the taco egg rolls. The size of a typical veggie spring roll and in the same crispy wrapper, these egg rolls come in an order of three or six and I wish I had ordered six instead of three. The taco meat had an amazing kick to it and there was enough cheese inside to be noticeable yet not take away from the meat. I didn't end up using the sour cream or nacho cheese they provided because I wanted to savor the flavor of the egg roll itself, but I appreciate having both options to dip them in.

We didn't really need anything to eat but the mousse flight sounded too good to pass up. And I was not disappointed. The Jazz night was on a Saturday night from 5-8. We arrived a little before 5 and it was the dinner rush. We found a seat close to the entertainment and were greeted shortly after. After reviewing the menu, I decided on a margarita mocktail and a iced caramel macchiato. My husband and I ordered the nachos to share. There are options to add chicken or ground beef to the nachos. We chose the ground beef. The service was fast and friendly and our drinks amd nachos were out shortly after ordering. The nachos were so good. We ordered the small and was the perfect amount for us to share. My margarita was perfect and couldn't tell there wasn't a lick of alcohol in it. :). My caramel macchiato was sweet and delicious. The Jazz pianist that night was Blue Louis. He took a mix of contemporary, Jazz, show tunes, country, love songs and jazzed them up. He is an expert pianist and welcomed our comments and questions. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are hoping Cool City will consider another Jazz night!
