At some point, the stepdaughter who is the POA and Health POA,only allowed us to visit on Tuesdays. We live in Mesa. Because of her rules, they could never answer any questions. Around March of 2024, he was moved to memory care. It seemed good until my brother kept losing weight. His stepdaughter would not take him to the dentist, he had many teeth missing and couldn't chew. Their needs to be accountability of the facility who needs to do what's best for the health of the resident. They did not. They just let her dictate and eventually he starved and recently died. When I mentioned in March that he only took one bite of his food, they were not concerned, also said he wouldn't drink a shake. When my sister and I would bring something for him to eat, it took time with him to coax and get him to eat. Their staff does not have the time to spend with a resident that long. We witnessed other residents not being properly taken care of. Most can't open the patio door to go outside, it's too heavy. I had to jump up quickly to save a man from falling flat on his face. The recliner was broken. My brother died of starvation and they cared more about following the stepdaughters wishes than doing what was best for my brother

When concerns were brought to her about Janice and her staff she mocked me and did nothing. Janice was a marketing director. She became the Executive Director and I do not believe she ever had prior caregiving experience. She never checked / or seemed to care on what was going on inside those houses. She was often understaffed and residents were neglected. From my miserable experience of having my father there I heard of 2 people who died from falls that may have been prevented with proper staffing and care. I also was told of a women who died because she was ill and staff was not doing much to help her. One staff member advocated for her to be seen by a doctor or nurse, but her voice was dismissed and the woman died. That employee was heart broken and left her position there promptly. The final straw for me and two other family members of residents : they were allowing employees to bring their sick children to the home while they "worked" and they all had Covid with symptoms!!! In fact they were pushing them to come to work even though they were symptomatic. Avid this place. It's very sad to see that many of these facilities are mainly focused on making money rather than providing the best care for helpless seniors. It can happen to any of us, anyone of us can end up in a place like this and change needs to happen!! She had anxiety and depression with her dementia on days when Bishop wasn't there. There were falls and issues on days when he wasn't there. Mom and other residents said he made the best food. Most of the time The Villas had staff quitting and short staffing where people had shuffle to cover other Villa as well as their own. Thank god Bishop was there making my mother smile till the end! Kelly, the sales manager, was so empathic and kind. He promised us that our Dad would have the best care around the clock. Nurse Sandy and her caregiver staff have been there for years, some over 10 year. Marbella and Troy were amazing, kind, caring, respectful, listened and truly cared about our fathers well being! Anytime he/we rang for assistance, they were there in a minute with more than one person. Our goal for our father was to live in a peaceful, caring place, and Amber Lights was certainly that. Staff seems to be more concerned with sitting, gossiping and ensuring residents are medicated to just sit with no activity. A memory care facility would provide true interactions with residents that stimulates their mind and body. Staff is lazy and food is not ideal for residents (for example, processed foods, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.). Hoping the new site director turns this place around because theft from residents is high. The cameras may help somewhat but bottom line is, real caretakers and medical technicians are hard to find to provide quality care.

I changed my review of Brookdale from 5 stars to 1 star because of the extremely poor management and corporate policies here. There have been at least four different executive directors here in the two years that my dad has lived here. Each director would make promises about the monthly cost, and then subsequent directors would not honor them. Brookdale also increases rent every year. The worst part is that they keep raising my father's care costs, and often without informing me. Today I received my father's monthly bill and it was $2,000 higher than normal. Apparently my dad was not getting charged for something and they decided to bill me retroactively, and without any notice. This is made even worse now because of the current COVID-19 lockdown. Even if I wanted to move my father to a different facility, I can't take tours of any other facilities because they are not allowing visitors. I feel that I was lured into moving my dad here with low monthly costs, and now my dad's monthly bill here far exceeds his income.
