They had a musician playing in the dining area, and not only was he talented, but he was also kind enough to acknowledge my niece's birthday and asked the other guests to join in singing "Happy Birthday" for her! We had dinner at the Wagon Wheel and instantly fell in love--what a charming tavern! It's full of character, history, and that cozy vibe you just don't find everywhere. The menu is on the smaller side, but don't let that fool you--it's absolutely fantastic. I ordered the Wagyu smashed burger (and yes, I was so excited I forgot to take a picture), and it did not disappoint. It was incredibly flavorful and cooked perfectly. The portion was generous too--I only ate half and had the rest the next day, and somehow it was just as amazing. That says everything right there. I've been here a few times before and went again last night for the purpose of seeing live music. Fantastic! Fantastic music by Mike Duva, fantastic bartender, fantastic menu and food! There was a bulb out in the ladies room and the hostess actually cared, she was right on it! That's impressive! Nice crowd of patrons as well. After last night's experience, I highly recommend. The service was good and our waitress was very nice. We were seated in the back room so the waitstaff didn't come around very often but we didn't need much. I like the look of the Water Wheel Tavern, it fits into what I think of when I think Bucks County. The staff are all great (at least at the bar), they give great service, and are polite. The drinks are cold and they have a happy hour with some good prices. The food though, it's typical of what you'd find in this area...over priced and lacking flavor. I don't know though if this is a me thing, as I mentioned this type of cuisine is common in the Doylestown area. I really think it's what the locals want: a menu with no direction, no seasoning and mediocre plate presentation. But if you want a spot to grab a quick few drinks and relax by all means stop, but beware, it's as quiet as a library so speak softly. read more

We stopped by the water wheel after touring the Mercer Museum in Doylestown. I made reservations on Open Table on the drive down. Out waitress was intuitive and friendly. Though I wouldn't necessarily recommend the scallops, everything else we ordered was great. We had a great time and the atmosphere was perfect. We ended up liking it so much we paid and had another drink at the bar while listening to the acoustic act. The bartender there was as great as a the waitress. Checked off the list for places to try, we were aptly impressed with the Water Wheel Tavern. This place is clean, I am talking spotless. Despite the age of this building and overwhelming places for dust to linger - whoever is in charge of cleaning deserves a raise. The Water Wheel houses several bars on several levels. The interior is warm and inviting. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. I was trying to overhear the historical details on this beautiful property as the other tables waitress was telling her patrons but I couldn't quite hear anything other than it was built in the 1700 and undergone a few renovations including the removal of the wheel. Pricing is on par for the Doylestown area. Our food was presented beautifully and the atmosphere is relaxing. Well worth a visit and recommendation. read more

Other than the wait staff, the Water Wheel is very disappointing. The place is a facade. Food is not up to the standards of fine dining but the prices are. The jerk beef and shrimp appetizer was good but other than that, Originality is not a priority on their list. The French onion, was fresh and cooked properly, but lacked that French onion beefy flavor. The Caesar salad dressing was not restaurant made. It's store bought Ken's! My wife had chicken tortellini that appeared to have been sitting under a heat lamp, and lacked originality and flavor. The fries with Steak Frites were crispy and fresh, but again....no flavor. Ribeye was fatty. Desert was purchased from bindi foods in New Jersey. No drinks, appetizer and meal listed above was $130. STEP IT UP WATER WHEEL ! We came here for dinner at the bar on Saturday night. I ordered the French Onion soup with no bread of course. I also had an order of wings I got about 12, half having garlic parm sauce and half having hot garlic sauce. The French onion soup was very good with an adequate amount of cheese on top. They even gave you some little scissors to cut the cheese when it strings out which is a nice touch. The soup tasted good. It was hot and seasoned well. The wings were good as well with plenty of sauce. I give them a little ding because they did not offer an extra hot sauce which I like to have on the menu. The server/bartender was very friendly and quick with a smile which is nice. Finally, the entertainment/live music was spot on for the atmosphere. The bottom line is that we will come back to the Water Wheel Tavern when we want a nice night out. This is a solid choice for a couple glasses of wine and dinner. read more

I stumbled upon this restaurant by total chance, as I was in Doylestown down the street at the Fred Beans Ford dealership looking for a new vehicle. Wow, what a great place this is! It is so cute and cozy inside. My mom and I went here for lunch and the whole time we talked about how we wish this was closer to home. The food was delicious! The short rib grilled cheese was absolutely out of this world tasty and the warm pretzel was amazing! The dip that came with the pretzel definitely tasted homemade. It was a cheese sauce and then a Dijon type mustard - not from a bottle if I had to guess! Our server was very quick and attentive the entire time. Weeks later, my mom and I tried another restaurant near our home and ordered similar items and it was not even remotely as good. We looked at each other and simultaneously said we have to plan a day trip with something to do in Doylestown so we can come back here! The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is that at times the heater turned into cooler air and we got chilly for a moment until it was warm again. I'm sure it's their way of regulating the temperature, but that is all I can think of that I want a fan of. Otherwise, I can't wait to go back someday. read more

We have been to the Waterwheel many times and have always had a nice meal. We went on June 13, 2025 for dinner. We were told there was a new menu which we looked forward to seeing. We didn't like the menu as much as the old one but we both ordered chicken pot pie. It was very disappointing. It was mostly gravy with a slight hint of chicken and vegetables and it had two triangles of puff pastry in it which didn't taste very good. It cost $28 and wasn't worth half of that. We told our waitress who was very apologetic and told us the restaurant is under new ownership. We are taking this restaurant off of our list of places to eat. Very disappointing! read more

Came in for dinner on a Tuesday night with my mom and brother. This was our first visit and I'm sure we will be back. The tavern is SO inviting. The lighting is warm and the wood look is very welcoming. We sat at a high top in the bar area and were brought the happy hour menu along with the regular menu. I ordered the chicken, fig, green apple, and spinach sandwich. My brother had the fried pickle burger, and my mom had the chicken salad sandwich. Everyone loved their food. I tasted my mom's sandwich and the chicken salad was flavorful and not sweet, despite having some walnuts and raisins mixed in. My brother's burger was a work of art. I tasted one of the fried pickle garnishes and it was crunchy and delicious. My sandwich was great. The grilled chicken tasted fresh and the crunch from the green apple was a nice textural component. The bathroom is downstairs (they have a handicap accessible one on the main floor) and it was clean and stocked with soap and paper towels. The food was delicious, the service was outstanding. We went with a buffet style dinner so everyone could mingle around. Fantastic Lunch After a wonderful visit to the Mercer Museum, my Aunt and I were famished and in the mood to relax at a cozy local tavern. We found this restaurant from the best restaurants list on Tripadvisor and visited because its only ten minutes away from the museum. The service was friendly and efficient. By chance I ordered what ended up being the best Black and Blue Cheeseburger I've had in my life. My Aunt ordered a very delicious Harvest Chicken Salad Sandwich. The restaurant is family friendly, historic, and very approachable. I instantly felt comfortable. Ok, so the short version.... The place looks great, ample parking, good pub decor, clean... Service... meh... Drinks...meh-er Food...meh-est Let's start with service... the kid seemed nice, but apparently suffered from a hearing deficiency, lack of menu knowledge, or experience with drinks.... but was nice and cordial. Drinks: I ordered two different hazy IPAs.... For the first, I received a Coors Light equivalent ... they claimed it was a beer that sounded similar to what I had ordered ( which actually wasn't on their beer list)... then I changed to a different IPA, and ended up with a Yeungling lager. Realizing the folly of my efforts, I shifted to cans and actually got an IPA. I have never sent two beers back in my life. My lady ordered a hot toddy.... super simple ... but instead of honey they used simple syrup and some pre-squeezed lemon juice. Tasted like a spiked lemonade. Ugggggh Now dinner... First, my lady is smarter than me... seeing the issues with service and drinks... she opted for an obviously pre-made Impossible burger.... but, since she is an optimist (probably why she tolerates me) she asked for cheese to be added, and for ketchup and Mayo and mustard. I went with... drumroll... crab cakes (which allegedly come with risotto and tartar sauce) ! I mean after having a sub-par performance on the basics why not just go for it.... I couldn't turn down seeing how the crab cakes would come out. The results.... The Impossible burger, had no cheese, didn't have the red pepper sauce they mentioned in the menu, and none of the fixings requested. Fries were good. For me... I brought this upon myself.... The crab cakes had the cheapest crab available, no claws. Fairly small, but limited filler, limited seasoning. The tartar sauce wasn't brought, and the waiter had to be shown the menu to believe it went with it. He said... "I never see sauce with these" ... I believe him. The green beans were ok. Nothing special, nothing super bad. The risotto... oh lord... the risotto My people, I've made risotto, I've eaten it in many states, countries, this...., this was not risotto. I thought at first it was mashed potatoes. Not the buttery, whipped kind that makes holidays wonderful... but the kind that makes your intestines lock up as the dense nature of them are digested. My best guess is this was a ball of supremely over-boiled rice, reheated, with three small shards of Parmesan on top... this of course allowing them to call it Parmesan risotto... I think it more fitting to call it rice mush with cheese garnish. The waiter asked if we wanted dessert or coffee with the same shame I'm sure the chef sent that risotto out with. If you get a burger and fries and beer in a can, I think it could be a good experience, beyond that dine at your own risk. read more

We asked if by chance they had anything available, and she said that she would look and was able to find a table. There were plenty of tables available, though I understand that locations are short-staffed. The wait staff was very nice and attentive. Very good experience on Saturday night. We made reservations for 6 and we're glad we did. The place was very full. Live music was playing in the bar area. We first found out about the water wheel thru Open Table. The prices were not updated on that site so expect an extra $5 per entree but that's to be expected during covid inflation of meat. The burgers are juicy and flavorful requiring extra napkins! The pulled pork sandwich has great flavor. The French onion soup is top notch! Sweet onions and lots of cheese make it a hit.
