I was staying nearby and visited this diner twice, both times after eating elsewhere and still feeling like I had room for more food. Located a block from Washington Square Park, the diner is just outside the southern exit of the A/C/E metro stop. Interestingly, there's another diner outside the northern metro exit, Waverly Diner. I went there last year and I give Wash. Sq. Diner a slight nod, mostly because they have daily specials. The staff is primarily Spanish-speaking. They are quick, fairly attentive and fairly friendly. The diner does charge extra for using a credit card. The menu is HUGE (7 pages),and as said previously, there usually is a separate menu with the day's specials. My first visit I ordered from the "weekend dinner specials" menu, Romanian steak and shrimp combo. It came with soup (5 choices), salad (choice of dressing), potato (several choices), vegetable (several choices) and a roll. I chose a decent matzo ball soup. The salad had more ingredients than expected, like red onions and bell pepper. The steak I think was a hangar steak, decently prepared. The shrimp were fileted and topped with a stuffing that was mostly bread, with a few chunks of seafood that seemed more like smaller shrimp than crab. My potato was baked, fine. My veg was fresh broccoli, simply steamed. A lot of food! My second meal was a grilled cheese sandwich. There were 5 cheese choices (I chose cheddar) and bread choices. I added tomato, bacon and onion rings on the side. A small cup of slaw was included. The sandwich was quite expertly grilled with a good melty cheese pull. The onion rings seemed house-made, not frozen. Delish. The West Village is full of acclaimed, crowded, hard-to-get-into restaurants, but sometimes a "simple" diner is all you need, and Wash. Sq. Quaint. Small. Packed. Open on Christmas morning. The epitome of a perfect NY Diner! Christmas Eve 2024, I wake up at 5 AM in Kansas City only to realize, I'm spending Christmas alone. Bummer. I make coffee, turn on the fire, sit in my chair, and I realize... alone is not fun. I buy a ticket, pack a duffle bag, and head to the airport. 30 hours in NYC... no more perfect of a way to spend the holiday. As I sit at my gate, my partner texts, "my flight is canceled, come pick me up". My response: "Meet me at gate B36". Christmas together! After a fun Christmas Eve evening, we woke up needing a good brunch and Washington Square Diner did just that. In pure NY style, they sat us quickly at the bar, coffee and water are there instantly. We order. Food is there in moments. Hot, fresh, delicious! Everything was perfectly flavorful. The bustling diner around us just made the morning even more magical! It appeared that we would have a very long wait, but they were very well organized the line went very quickly. The food was good. Based on what was ordered at our table, I would recommend the omelettes. The omelettes are delicious and come with some amazing potatoes. I got the 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 sausage links, and 2 slices of bacon. It was all good, especially the thick crispy bacon. My only complaint is that they put the over easy eggs on top of the pancakes. It's difficult to get them off without breaking the yolk. I observed a couple of other people trying to get their eggs off the pancakes. I am assuming that some people like eggs on top of pancakes so the yolks will sink into the pancakes. I like for my egg yolks to mix with grits. The ambiance is very much busy New York. I thought this was a great classic diner, very fast service and a wide variety on the menu. Our food came out quickly and they were able to modify anything on the menu (however I did ask for well done bacon and it was not well done IMO). Very spacious place so you could definitely come here with a large group or there are plenty of solo diners eating at the bar or the 2 seaters. Denied us seating & service for bringing a service animal, which is against the law. Even with showing the service tag manager just said "no dog" and walked away without any conversation. They don't know how to cook eggs. It is always overdone or if over easy yoke broke. Potatoes should be well done.

They discriminate against people with service dogs. It was very embarrassing to have them continually call my service animal a pet and then tell us no pets allowed when he is a service animal.
