Wasabi House. My Dads favorite restaurant. I eat here all the time with him. I love the Pork Tonkasu - it's a must try. The dipping sauce is phenomenal....I'm not a raw sushi fan - I only eat cooked rolls. They make it just how I like it. They used the rice paper per my request, and even gave me sesame seeds on the side....they also have fresh wasabi here- There's nothing like it. My family eats raw sushi and swear by it. They eat this stuff up by the platter full. We also ordered a mango salad which I asked for them to add avocado on top - yum! I usually love the banana tempura dessert however tonight I was stuffed. The owners are pleasant and the staff is happy and friendly as well..... read more

Wasabi34 - Omakase style - great chef choices. So fresh and delicious. Best sushi place in town. - Japanese Near Me - Matawan, New Jersey

Good sushi, would have gave 4 stars but I got the rainbow roll and it's usually the fish wrapped around a California roll. Not this place, no avocado. Still good sushi but caught off guard. read more

I came here on a Friday night to have dinner with a friend. As I pulled into the parking lot it seemed a bit small and not well maintained. The interior was outdated. Service was typical. The waiter forgot to bring out rice with our entree so we had to flag him down. The sushi that I ordered was good. I heard that they had *fresh wasabi* available. Definitely try this with your sushi! However the waiter should have informed us about the fresh wasabi and the extra cost. I didn't mind paying extra ~$1 but maybe for others it would have been a good FYI. *Chicken and Broccoli. Overpriced ~$18. *Salmon Sushi - RECOMMENDED *Avokaze Roll - RECOMMENDED *Fresh Wasabi - RECOMMENDED All in all the sushi was good and the fresh wasabi definitely stood out to me! read more

Absolute best sushi in central jersey. Amazing customer service. Whether you wanna eat in or take out you cannot beat the quality and freshness. My favs; volcano road, tapple and smoked. Also for a treat they have the most delish fried ice cream. The teriyaki is amazing as well. Bottom line go and get whatever you like. It's all good. Mango salad is also very delish!!! read more

I've never eaten in, but I have ordered delivery from here a few times and have not been disappointed! Everything comes packaged neatly and the food has always been fresh! read more

OYSTER roll is one of the best rolls I got here... but, I personally think that this place is pricy. The sashimi is pretty fresh.

As you walk in the door the first thing that hits you is a odor. And not a good one but I said okay anyway ( knowing how good their food is) and we sat down. While sitting the odor is lingering. We order. I look around and the window shade that was once white is all shades of filthy. It was Absolutely disgusting my mouth hung open and not from drooling at food. The carpet you can see not only needs to good vacuuming it should be removed it is absolutely disgusting. . As we are getting food to our table I could not enjoy it because of the horrible odor of the restaurant. You could tell they were trying to hide the odor with some sort of cleanser. Which clearly did not work. It only made it worse . I don't know how this place stays open and passes the Board Of Health inspection!!!! It is a shame because they have very good food, but you can't enjoy it with the stink. I look across to my husband and say " if it smells this bad out here I can only imagine how bad it is in the kitchen where we can't see". Never will come back . Not unless we want to get sick. This place gets the award for dirtiest restaurant ever. If you Value your health skip this place and find someplace cleaning. read more

I was very suprised by this place. All the food was better than expected. The pork tonkatsu was crispy and flavorfull. My three year old actually ate a bunch of it. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The matawan roll was my favorite seconded by the smoke roll. For an appetizer we had the takoyaki, the breading was like a beignet with a savory filling topped with a sweet sauce. Highly recommend this place. read more

We came here with some friends for dinner after reading the reviews and were glad we did! I had called the restaurant to see if reservations were needed for a party of 6 and she took my name down. When we got there, it turned out no reservations were needed because it was almost empty. Place feels very cavernous. We ordered Sashimi yellowtail dinner, seafood pancake, chicken wings, salmon roll, wasabi salad with dressing on side, tuna, salmon and mackerel and Chefs special 2. Everything was delicious and the sushi tasted fresh. Service was a bit slow. It took a while for us to get our sushi order even though there were hardly any customers there. Will return in the future, though. read more

This is my Go to place for sushi super fresh and for me great service esp for delivery - very patient over the phone never any issues quick and fast. The rolls are always fresh and lots of fish not stuffed with rice. The aged tofu is addicting ! Haven't tried the other appetizers but even writing this is making me hungry I'll be going shorty ! Best sushi in the area and even better than a lot of nyc spots. read more

So happy to stumble upon this restaurant! Everything happens for a reason...attempted to eat at another sushi restaurant a block away but it was closed due to renovations so we went to Wasabi34 and was very pleased! Fish was super fresh and service was A+!! Don't skip this restaurant...sit with Hoi at the sushi bar and he'll take care of you read more

Not horrible but out of the 4 sushi restaurants on 34 this is my least favorite. Staff was pleasant. This place is a little run down as seen by the concrete steps for wheelchair access crumbling. The sushi was just meh. Oh and the smell in the entrance was awful. There is a coat rack when you enter and the jackets had bad Body Oder smells that made you gag. read more

Love love love the sushi and rolls at Wasabi House! The fish here is super fresh and that is the most important thing for a sushi restaurant! My favorite rolls are the Fire Roll and the Mardi Gras Roll (crawfish - so unique and delicious!). I have eaten in as well as gotten take out and have been pleased with both options. The decor for the restaurant is a little old fashioned, but hey as long as it keep the price down! The service staff was friendly. One other thing I like about them is that they have fresh wasabi if you ask for it which I have never seen outside of Japan! . Every other restaurant around here only have wasabi paste, which FYI is really fake wasabi/ green horseradish. I have noticed their special rolls are priced a lot lower than other restaurants so I always take advantage of that when I go! v(^.^) Highly recommend! read more

My boyfriend and I LOVE going to wasabi 34, but we've never ordered it to go before. Of course, with covid, they're not open for indoor dining so we thought we'd give the delivery a try and it was PERFECT. It arrived faster than grubhub said it would, and the food was amazing. We got 2 lunch specials, plus an extra 2 rolls to split and everything was as tasty as it is when you eat in the restaurant. Thanks for staying open!! I wish I thought to take some pictures, but we will definitely be ordering again. read more

This is our go-to Japanese restaurant. The sashimi is so fresh. Great variety of cooked and uncooked food. Delicious!

Great local sushi! I absolutely LOVE their roast pork roll! It's one of my favorite sushi rolls ever! Their gyoza is really good. Great prices and service. & BYOB. read more

I grew up in this area and let's just say 'for the most part'...it isn't a very diverse environment (especially compared to Edison, NJ), but I have to say this place has top quality sushi. I ordered some classic nigiri and a hotate (scallop) roll that were extremely fresh and delicious. Of course, there are basic items for the broader clientele like chicken teriyaki that will make you think this place is generic. Regardless, if you enjoy quality sushi for a decent price, I would certainly come to to this restaurant. read more

Easily the best sushi spot in the area and I've tried just about all of them. I find myself here 2-3 times per month and have tried just about everything. Whether you're eating in or taking out, everyone is super friendly and the food quality is very consistent. read more

Ordered sushi sashimi combo and the tuna was gray. It literally looked cooked but was not. Wouldn't even it the tuna and tried the rest of the fish and even the rice was not good. Used to be ok but maybe with the COVID their fish is clearly not fresh. When I called and complained he tried to tell me it was toro and special. Not good. read more

The lunch specials are a great deal. I just moved back into the area and this was one of the first places I ordered from.

Not a bad place to eat. Food was good. But I had better. I still would try it out though, maybe I just ordered the wrong entree. Maybe the cook was having a bad day. All I know is that I give places at least two tries to give them the benefit of the doubt. My girl and I had seaweed salad, which she loved of course. It was ok for me. I ordered chicken teriyaki with white rice on the side. They always give big heaping portions. The chicken teriyaki was drenched with teriyaki sauce which I love, and had onions as well. My girl had shrimp tempura rolls which she liked. Overall it was ok. But like I said we will swing by here again next time around and give it one more shot. Our experience might be different next time around. read more

If you never tried good sushi around the world or never been NYC Japanese restaurants. Yup, maybe u will think this place is good. I am sorry, for my bf and me this place is terrible. We ordered Yaki udon which is egg + vegetables + some chickens + soup （I don't know I should say soup or just describe to water）because it was terrible. Did they study how to make Yaki udon? We also ordered the sushi and sashami combo. I believe the fish was frozen too long or had some issues. The fish totally lost all flavor and had no taste at all. SAD. I absolutely will not go back. Save money and go to another place. read more

The food is decent. No complaints. They do have some veggie options (vegetarian dinner rolls) or the veggie yaki udon (ask for no butter, egg, etc). For the vegarian rolls, it comes with avocado cucumber roll, sweet potato roll, and the squash roll. I really love all 3 combos..this dinner is super filling too. I'm giving this restaurant a 2/5 because of the service. We came here on a friday night with a party of 6 and I felt like the service was extremely slow and the waiters were not attentive at all. They were not even that busy in my opinion. It took about 30-40 minutes for the food to come out of the kitchen, which felt like forever. read more

We used to eat here frequently before a competitor opened a couple hundred of yards away. We visited for lunch today as Wasabi34 has lunch specials on Sunday. I'll start with the good things: - Lunch specials everyday - Convenient location on rt 34, plenty of parking - Staff was nice - We were seated promptly - Order was taken quickly and the food arrived quickly - We enjoyed the dessert (Vanilla fried ice cream) The first thing we noticed when we walked in was a strong fishy smell. It is a sushi restaurant so that could be expected but it was a bit over the top. I ordered a 3 roll lunch special, with Tuna Avocado and Spicy Tuna rolls. The presentation was lacking, and the taste was worse.. they used shredded tuna for the Tuna avocado rolls and it was the wrong texture, taste and visual. The spicy tuna roll had some other very fishy taste to it. The two other meals we got was a beef teriyaki stand-alone and one in a box. Both seemed to have been boiled.. wrong texture, very fatty and poor taste. The miso soup was ok, white rice was ok. We enjoyed the vanilla fried ice cream. If we ever come back, which is highly unlikely, it would be for that. All in all, I'm surprised they were able to stay in business all these years with such poor quality food and presentation of food. Ganga down the street is orders of magnitude better. I hope they fix these issues, we were very disappointed and I cannot recommend this place. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite sushi places in the area. Their sushi is always fresh and delicious, my favorite is their spider rolls. Their miso soup is phenomenal. I have had a lot of miso soups from a lot of different places and Wasabi House by far has the best miso I have ever had. Their Wakame is also absolutely delicious. For every customer that dines here they give a small plate of Wakame over cucumber salad and it is the best. Once I accidentally ordered their mango salad and it is absolutely amazing. Their mango is always fresh no matter what time of year and their spicy mango is bursting with flavor. Their bento boxes are also very good, I usually get a chicken teriyaki and it is my personal favorite dish from wasabi house. For dessert my boyfriend and I always get their tempura cheesecake. It is perfectly fried and absolutely delicious. There are actually many occasions that my boyfriend and I have come to wasabi house just for dessert. Having gone to maybe sushi and Japanese food restaurants, I highly recommend Wasabi house to anyone looking for a delightful sushi and Japanese food experience. read more

Alright, but service wasn't that great. I came in here with a friend the other day, and we were the only ones the restaurant. The food came in pretty quickly and my friend had ordered a tempura roll and I ordered a lunch box "bento". The bento came with the usual salad and soup, however our waiter was very rude. Twice he came to our table insisting that I was finished and was going to take my plates when I haven't even touched the food. The quality is alright, and the food was pretty good, I would just ask the staff to be more patient. I felt rushed eating my food. read more

Ok so if you don't have any history and never ate here and investigating the up and down reviews let me give you some honest perspective. This is a very relaxed sushi restaurant which is part of its charm. The sushi can be extremely great on most nights and ok on some off days. The staff is very attentive and they do their absolute best to wow their customers. Are there better sushi restaurants? Sure but Wasabi 34 has an undeniable charm and most nights they serve delicious sushi served with a smile' read more

Was looking for a place that was open late for dinner and ended up here. The place looks old, but the food was decent and the service was friendly. We ordered the Deluxe Sashimi Dinner, and the sushi did not taste bad even though it was at the end of the day. It seemed a bit pricy though, but I guess that may just be the regular price for sushi around that area. read more

For a sushi joint in what I consider suburan land, this place rocks. Everytime I come here the waitstaff is so attentive (even on saturday nights when its packed). The food is on point, the servings on the cooked entrees are huge, I always end up taking food home. I prefer Wasabi over Ganga (which is down the street) anytime. The spicy tuna roll is fab. So if you are in the mood for sushi, don't want to spend a fortune or go into nyc, check out wasabi house. read more

I love Wasabi House. This was my first time at this location - I've been enjoying the East Brunswick location for many years - after following the crew from Shogun 18. Food is fresh, flavor and well made - and on top of that a good value for GOOD sushi. I drive to Wasabi house as I have come to trust them in getting good food. Go for the Wasabi Shumai, Tapple Roll, Ruby Roll, and fresh Scallops if they have them. This are my old standards that I ALWAYS get. read more

Awesome sushi and teriyaki plates. We had the black dragon roll and a tofu salmon teriyaki and it was delicious! The dragon roll is a great recommendation for those who aren't crazy about raw sushi and the teriyaki is pretty unique. I haven't had a dish like this before. Definitely not recommended for those who don't like onions though. Onion lovers rejoice! Even after finishing the main part of the dish I went after the teriyaki soaked caramelized onions and it was heaven. read more

I've ordered from here twice. The food is below average. I wouldn't recommend it. I will not try it again. Hard pass. Issues: Sushi- the rice was very mushy. Yuck! Lunch Special Chicken Teriyaki - the chicken didn't seem cooked through out. Took one bite, spit it out, and throw it away. The only good part of the whole meal was the soup, salad, and coke (Coke Cola). read more

Don't go here unless you have all day to spare. There is one waiter who seats people, takes orders, cleans tables, gets the check, processes the credit card payment, packs the take out orders and does basically everything. The chefs are slow. When we went there the owners family was eating and their kids were screaming their heads off. Sushi took over 20 minutes to be served. Definitely NOT coming back ! read more

I have been going to this restaurant for the past 15 years. I used to live in Monmouth county and now live in Middlesex County. This is always my go to as I haven't found ANYTHING around that compares. I lived in Japan for 4 years and have found this to be my favorite Japanese restaurant around (and I have tried many), barring going into the city-some great places there. Should have reviewed this place a long time ago! If you want good traditional Japanese food without hype-fushion etc check this place out. read more
