Really, really fresh sushi
Brian G.

I have to say, we ordered in, and it was probably the hottest food I've ever eaten, I give them a lot of credit for making it so well. Probably one of the best chicken udon I've ever eaten, and the miso soup was super super hot. Teriyaki chicken was very good, And they do it really really quickly. Great job.

Delicious just super pricey for what you get! $17 for 3 rolls, I got salmon avocado, tuna avocado & alaska roll. Ordered for delivery & they came pretty quickly :)

Ordered Yama Chips which are "Chunked Big eye tuna, super white tuna, scottish salmon, mixed with seaweed salad and chef's special sauce, served on top of crispy Japanese chips" It was mush and came with Pringles Potato chips. Wish I was joking. $16

This was the best sushi restaurant I've been to in a while. You can't beat the price; especially for lunch! Service was good and attentive. Inside was nice.

Beautiful wall decor

It really pains me to give Yama Sushi only 3 stars. The decor and service are both truly 5 stars. This place used to be an Italian restaurant and it has been completely redecorated and transformed into a cool, stylish Japanese oasis. Every aspect of the space was paid attention to. The walls are adorned in glitter, they hung up japanese parasols in the back room and large fun lanterns/dice(?) in the front, their are accents of red, black and glitter all throughout (see photos) -- Based on looks alone, this place is a winner. Unfortunately, my friend and I were just very underwhelmed by the food. We came in around lunchtime and were seated immediately. Our server was readily available at all times and had a pleasant demeanor. I tried a chicken teriyaki lunch special and my friend had two basic sushi rolls. We were so disappointed. Everything was lacking in flavor - especially the fish & sushi rice (...so basically the entire roll lol) Perhaps its the type of rice vinegar they use (or don't use) but the rice was extremely bland, as was the fish inside. Sushi should never be tasteless - it should be fresh and have good flavor to it. The chicken teriyaki was good, not great. Although I love how the restaurant looks, it seems that Yama should pay less attention to their eye-grabbing decor and perhaps spend a bit more on higher quality food.

Tried this place after a friend found a groupon for it! It was definitely a great find! The food is absolutely delicious! Some of the best sushi I had in a long time. Some of my favorite rolls were OMG roll, and firecracker roll! We also ordered the Yama chips appetizer and it was delicious! It had different raw fishes and it was served on a Pringle. The service was also great! Definitely recommend this place. They have a groupon for weekdays and one for weekend. The weekday one for 12.50$ for 25$ worth of food!

If I could give this 0 stars I would . We picked up a to go order from here with 2 lunch specials a Kani salad and shumai . The kani salad was leaked all over everything in the bag and to top it all off a rubber band was in the bottom of one of the sushi rolls attached when we went to go eat it, disgusting and will not return ever again

Even better visit this time. They've really upped their game with presentation and service. The sushi was extra fresh this visit too.

Lunch special is a wonderful deal. Tasty high quality salmon sushi, and the absolute best Kani salad (with tempura crunchies in top).

My kids enjoy Yama sushi more than other sushi restaurants in the area. Sushi is always fresh and delicious and the owner is courteous!

Just came back from having dinner here. Surprise surprise. Another AYCE spot in Jersey…read more Overall, the fish quality was decent and the sashimi pieces were large. Good selection of hot food too. The service was quite slow even though the restaurant was empty. It took a while for the sushi to arrive, and by that time, we started feeling full from the appetizers. We knew we were not going to get our money's worth tonight. Towards the end of our meal, we started smelling a poopy stench in the air - yes you heard me, POOPY! It made me completely lose my appetite. I'm so done with sushi buffets...never again :(

The menu was a mix of Japanese and Chinese dishes. Unfortunately they missed the mark on both. At some point, halfway through the meal I thought to myself, wow these flavors are way off, do they even know how to cook or know the flavors that the customers are looking for. (Why would you put wasabi in the bbq squid that comes with teriyaki sauce), to order hibachi you need to order everything separately. The service was kind and attentive but very disorganized even though it was only 2 tables being served. Do NOT order the all-you- can-eat, waste of money, too expensive for the quality and flavor combinations. Only get it if you just want to shovel food down your gastronomical hole. Hate doing poor reviews!!! This is only meant for the owners/managers to take note and fix it all, and create value for the customer.

Dishes were never cleared. No tipping expected after the 12% service charge fee was added. Interesting. Senior discount not applied. $28 lunch. I left wondering if the dinner menu is different. English not spoken here or everyone is goofing and pretending. The hot pot broth is a mystery. No utensils were provided to cook with the hot pot. It's like they want you to put the the food in and don't take it out to eat.If you are food sensitive you are out of luck. I liked the BBQ probably because of MSG that I don't use at home. Service was non existent I had to use the nearby table for our used plates. You don't get the occasional, how is everything question, I assume no tips equals no table service. I got a kick out of when I asked for something I got blank looks. If servers don't speak I'd appreciate English labels, or a sheet of paper for the challenged.

The sashimi presentation is also a miss, served in small individual aluminum containers instead of laid out on a shared platter. It feels inefficient and less appetizing than grabbing fresh cuts with tongs. That said, the Chinese food side is actually solid. The BBQ squid stands out as one of the better items, while the ribs were disappointing, too fatty and drenched in sauce. I skipped the hot pot since the meats in the fridge didn't look particularly fresh or appealing. Compared to other locations, the East Brunswick spot seems to do a better job with both quality and keeping the sushi stocked. Drinks are another weak point. The bubble teas are overly sweet and not very good, though kids will probably enjoy them. I'd come back for some of the Chinese dishes and a few sushi pieces, but overall it feels overpriced for what you get.

Upon entering, you've entered a high speed Japanese train with lights and signage surrounding you. The little train cars that bring your food are super fun, and the conveyor belt is actually filled with food. The little robots that bring you appetizers are a fun touch too! There's a great mix of both sushi and cooked food here, and each dish has such amazing flavor (which is surprising for an AYCE establishment.) I was fully expecting something to taste off or not hit the mark, but that never came. While the sushi rolls are fun, the cooked food is definitely the star. The fried rice was flavorful, meats had great sear to them and the sauces were tasty. I've never been to an all you can eat that had agedashi tofu, so it was a surprise to me seeing this on the menu! Whether you're into raw sushi or cooked meals, there's food for everyone. I fully understand why wait times are so long - we waited for 1.5 hours for an early weekend dinner. Definitely need to visit this place at least once, maybe twice, or just all the time, because the bang for your buck here is unreal!

My cousin has been telling me about this spot in Freehold for a few weeks now and finally my girlfriend and I had dinner here with him and it was fantastic! We arrived as soon as they opened at 5pm on a Sunday so we got there before the rush and yes there is typically a rush from what I was told. This new venue is definitely smaller than the original, but maintains a clean minimalist aesthetic. The server could not have been more helpful or accommodating and had a very intimate knowledge of seemingly every item on the menu, including the extensive list of specials. We began with dumplings, calamari salad, and some tuna sushi rolls. The dumplings were perfectly satisfactory and hit the spot just right for when you're craving a dumpling. Dipping sauce complimented them well. Additionally, the sushi rolls had incredibly flavorful and fresh tasting tuna. Lastly, the calamari salad, being the most unique of the bunch, was definitely the star. It had a mild flavor, that was brought out and paired perfectly with their wonderful in-house sauce. My entree was the xo fat noodles and they were nothing short of fantastic. It had wonderful flavor, a good assortment of veggies and proteins, in a very generously sized portion. This may be my new go-to, as I will certainly be making a return visit.
