Waitress was the best. She checked in on us often and made sure that our order was perfect ! I can not believe how incredibly amazing the General Pso Chicken was. Super crispy and the flavor of sauce was amazing. I would go here just for this. Aaannnnd their fried rice has no business being as amazing as it is. I think they have a magician in the kitchen. Sushi was sooooo fresh and the size was great. They didn't skimp on the seafood at all. It was perfectly delicious. Will say the waitress did say we ordered so much and she didn't want us to take left overs because sushi is best enjoyed fresh. lol I think she just wanted to see us again, and we feel the same! I preface the review on the fact I did not done in. But nevertheless first time trying. Been on my bucket list to go in and eat there and do the chef's selection type tasting. Edamame. Perfect. Shrimp tempura roll - I mean it was small. Like too small. And lacked rice ‍. Definitely did not remotely match any of the other pics of it. The rice barely covered the seaweed. Hotate roll - a bit better. Again some rice would be nice. And the roll was tiny for the price. Sushi pizza - praise Jesus this thing is good. I could eat a dozen or so easily. Always a little nervous when you enter a restaurant and only one table is occupied, do we stay or do we go. We stayed. Plenty of help here, three men behind the sushi bar, all busy. Maybe they are still doing a big pick up business. A server was quick to open our wine and ask about drinks. We ordered the Chefs Special for 2, 10 sushi, 21 shashimi and 3 rolls. $66. All the fish seemed fresh. The roll were simple not specialty rolls. The sashimi were cut very thin, 3 pieces of 7 fish, including octopus. Sushi was very basic too. Recently moved to Matawan from nyc area so I'm pretty picky about my sushi. Haven't found a sushi spot that rivals some of the better places in nyc but I knew that before I moved to this area LOL! Anyways, I've tried a few different spots so far in the area and so far this is my favorite! I almost always order sashimi deluxe and I asked them to not give me white tuna and they obliged and substituted for me so that's always a plus for me! I was pleasantly surprised with my plate plus the pieces weren't skimpy either! Good service and my fish was fresh and it filled me up so overall happy and best part it's only 6 mins away! Used to be our "go to" for sushi- we are in Morganville. Tonight was absolutely awful. The fish was NOT FRESH... had to throw away an entire order. Salmon , yellowtail and even the avocado roll tasted nasty. Like they lost refrigeration or something... Sorry... this was horrible after 3 years of biweekly take out! I had a bad experience here. It was not something I recommend you try out. We were seated and got immediate attention. We ordered an udon soup and some rolls. The waiter brought a chicken udon stir fry. Despite us telling them we wanted soup and asked for soup they argued that wasn't what we ordered. There's really no point in arguing it and we really weren't going to win. We got served some oily udon stir fry which was not what we wanted. Our rolls were okay too. Again, nothing mind blowing and nothing bad. I think we were so disappointed by the experience overall that it really prevented anything else from being excellent. The spider roll was good. The Philly and spicy though weren't special. Aside from the udon disagreement we had a really really bad fried green tea ice cream. The batter wasn't completely fried and soggy. The ice cream just as green without the green tea matcha flavor. For a dinner that cost $45 it was not worth it. I really don't understand the hype. It's a mediocre local sushi place that isn't run by Japanese people. The service was bad and I can't believe we got in an argument about soup. I would avoid this place. read more

Sad. We have been going here for years, it was a great BYOB and good food and homey ambience. The last three visits were not good and last night was the topper...will not be returning. Waited over 45 minutes for a sushi order while the people we were with ordered cooked chicken dishes which came out in 5 minutes. Ended up taking the sushi to go, as everyone else was finished. Fried rice order came out at different time, appetizers were not hot, etc. It is a shame, something changed here - we gave it three tries as loyal customers but we are done now....sad read more

Pre pandemic this place was on my list to try. My daughter and I were craving sushi though so we rolled the dice. Everything was fresh, well seasoned, and although we had sticker shock when we looked at the menu? The portion size totally made up for it. Delivery time is a little long, but expected. The food? After devouring 3 Nathan's hot dogs, fries and a corn on the cob for lunch, I wanted a light dinner. Came here to try this place out after I saw many photos from a fellow Yelper. Being OCD, I have to admit my eyes was scanning around as soon as I walked in. It looked like someone's basement from the 70's. Although green is one of my favorite colors, I didn't quite take to the emerald green velvet chairs. The place is very dated. Here is what we had: - Fried Oysters - Mango Salad - Eel & Avocado Handroll - Sushi Deluxe Platter Everything was fresh tasting, cooked well and had a nice presentation. Overall, the food was very good. Service was interesting to say the least. The staff was busy chatting amongst themselves. The guy that took our order had such a serious and stern look on his face. Even my high-pitched cheerful voice didn't make him crack a smile. He seemed nicer to the people at the next table whom I assume are regulars. Will I return? Be been a fan of Wasabi House since it's inception in East Brunswick. The opening of Wasabi 34 several years back just made it all the more convenient to enjoy their innovative creations. My previous review mentioned the high quality and uniqueness of their maki rolls. Creations like the chewy roll, the hotate roll, the LK roll, and the house roll are not merely versions of the same roll you find everywhere else but entirely original conceptions that work extremely well. I recommend them all highly along with the fire roll, iso roll, and squid/Uni appetizer. Wasabi 34 has been among the best sushi options in the region, yet they've not only maintained their high-quality, but upped their game to the point where they've earned a coveted fifth star, an accolade I rarely bestow. The only other sushi restaurant on this level in the area is Sushi by Kazu in Freehold. For those who enjoy an Omakase, Wasabi 34 is the only venue in the area to offer it and it is one of the best deals around. For $38 the diner will be treated to a host of creative and e timely fresh off-menu sushi items, the quality of which rivals establishments that charge more than double. Last night's Omakase included a delicious toro maki roll, a tuna tartare/binomial seaweed concoction, a wonderful uni/ikura/quail egg offering, and a variety of supremely fresh sashimi. It was fantastic. Being able to dine inside was a welcome plus as well now that we are vaccinated. In fact, once inside the eatery has a distinctly pre-pandemic feel to it. Unlike DomoDomo in jersey city where each table is isolated in a plexiglass capsule of sorts, W34 is open and rather Laissez-faire as respect Covid. If you are looking for fresh sushi, friendly service, and something different than the other cookie cutter sushi places that pervade Mon,outs county, or are simply looking for a place where you can dine in, enjoy a great meal and feel more like it is 2018, Wasabi 34 is well worth the visit. read more

I must admit, I'm a fan! I ordered the California rolls, spicy tuna and the shrimp tempura and it was above average to me. Now, being a habitual sushi eater and I mean I could eat sushi just about four times a week and not get tired this place did not disappoint at all. I came on a Friday night and it was actually not packed at all. There were about other tables and our server was very attentive to our needs and very friendly. I had to take one star off for the decor of the place. When I walked in it felt like I was in a log cabin in the middle of the Poconos. The decor needs a major upgrade but even that to me didn't take away from the amazing sushi I had while here. I am ashamed that it took me this long to write a review of Wasabi 34. We've been eating here for many years, this is our go-to sushi spot. During COVID, we order at least once a week (many times two or even three times a week... yay stimulus money!) Wasabi 34 is, hands down, the best sushi you can get in the area. Their fish is always fresh and flavorful, and their sushi rice is in a league of its own. We always order the omakase and are always pleased; they usually send a selection of sashimi, a few pieces of nigiri, as well as creative rolls and amazing appetizers. It's always a special treat when we open the bag and see tuna toro or monkfish liver. Any time we've ordered from a different sushi place "to try, for a change," we are always let down and left with a craving for Wasabi 34. These delicious once-a-week dinner splurges are literally what's keeping us sane during COVID, and we can't wait until we're able to safely dine in and thank the chefs personally. I was here just picking up a doordash order and the lady was incredibly rude. I came up to tell her that I was picking up an order for this person and she put a hand in my face and just said "not ready". Another person came in also picking up an order and same thing happened to him. He walked up a few minutes later and told her that he got another order and told her the name and she cut him off and assumed he was talking about his first order. Dismissed him entirely and told him not ready again with a hand in his face. She wouldn't even let him finish his sentence and kept cutting him off. Me and the other guy were both being very respectful and just politely asking when the order will be ready and she would either ignore us or put a hand in our face. She was insanely rude and she was working at 6:30 on Friday the 15th. If you want good service, I would not recommend going there. read more

Wasabi 34 is my favorite restaurant in New Jersey, partly because they are so nice and quick, but mainly because the food is seriously good. I'll talk about some of my go-to orders down below: The Tonkatsu is so tender, flavorful, and crispy. The sauce is complex and it's become my # 1 craving. Comes with a cup of fragrant, savory miso soup. Salad is crispy and the dressing is zingy and sweet but fresh at the same time. 10/10 but really more like a 12/10 Matsu Bento box is by far the best deal in NJ. Tender beef, crispy tempura, fluffy rice, bouncy gyoza, and a sushi roll? I decided while writing this I have to order one for dinner tonight. This is a lot of food so order this if very hungry. Sashimi dinner was one of the best sushi experiences I've had. A variety of fresh fish that just really blew me away. I am an experienced fisherman and used to work as a line cook for high end weddings. I know the difference between fresh and not so fresh fish. Wasabi 34 clearly has high standards and only serves fresh fish. The ISO roll is also amazing. I usually get takeout but the inside is very clean and I love the decorations. The fact you can watch the sushi chefs work is always a bonus. All staff is friendly and helpful. It really seems like a family environment, especially when you walk in and see the great collage of photos of the staff having fun. Plenty of parking and easy to get to. This is my go to place to get my sashimi fix. It has good quality fish and on occasion they have items that most other sushi/sashimi places in the area don't have. Today I had the monkfish liver. It was soft and very tasty. I also had the toro which was slightly charred. Delicious. The atmosphere is casual. The menu has a variety of rolls, specialty rolls, sushi, sashimi and cooked foods like noodle soups, boxes, teriyaki, and tempura. It's BYOB. So bring that wine, they'll put it on ice and open it for you. The staff is efficient. I've tried several of the specialty rolls, salmon teriyaki box and lots of sashimi. It's all good. read more
