Wantuck - Insane charges for nothing more than simple diagnostic work.
I needed service on my hot water heater to fix a no heat condition. Diagnosing myself, the pilot light went out for no apparent reason. I followed the restart instructions, rotate the setting knob to Pilot, press it in and hold it in, press the igniter button. Several attempts at restart failed, and there was no repeated clicking when the igniter button was pushed. I did fully depress the igniter button to its physical stop.
The water heater was installed by Wantuck in 2016. It is off of warranty, but I figured I would give the installing company the service business. When I scheduled service I was told that there would be a $124 charge for the call (ringing my door bell) and diagnostic work. I was OK with that. I also understand that any work to 'fix' the problem would be extra for parts and labor.
The technician showed up on time. As the water heater is behind the laundry room door I was not able to see the work being done. The tech told me that he performed the exact same steps that I had done repeatedly, except the pilot lit on the first try. I asked the tech to step me through his procedure again, so that I could see what I had not done right. No missed steps by me. For some reason the igniter worked for the tech. It did audibly click and the pilot lit. I was not told if there had been any other steps performed that caused the igniter to function properly this time.
So I asked the tech what the charge was, expecting that for less than 15 minutes of on site diagnostics and getting the pilot lighting igniter to work (during the diagnostic procedure) I would pay the $124 service call charge. Nope! The charge was $182.50. I felt taken advantage of, but paid the $182.50. The tech told me that the higher cost was a charge for re-lighting the pilot. I figured it was the $124 service call charge and an additional $58.50 for re-lighting the pilot.
None of this billing sat well with me so I called Wantuck to complain. What I learned really made me feel taken advantage of. I was told by the service manager and again by William Wantuck, the owner, that the $124 charge had actually been waived. The $182.50 charge was ALL for the re-lighting of the pilot. YES! That is correct. For less than 15 minutes on site, and the work performed of turning a setting knob to pilot and pushing the igniter button the Wantuck charge is $182.50. Again, the $124 service call charge was waived. $182.50 is the obscene charge for less than 15 minutes on site and turning one knob and pressing a button. NO additional work that I know of was performed. And doesn't it seem reasonable that the first diagnostic action would be to rotate the setting knob to pilot, press it in and hold it and press the igniter button? And if the pilot lights, that is all part of diagnosing the problem? Nope! Not at Wantuck.
When I told both the service manager and the owner that that was insane and was price gouging I was told by both that that is a 'book value' assigned by the industry for the cost of lighting a pilot on a water heater. Well, the book is insane and your lack of discretion in charging will cost you customers.
My $182.50 lesson learned is never, ever again with Wantuck. Any friends or relatives asking for an HVAC referral will be steered away from Wantuck. read more
