I have searched high and low for authentic Portuguese doughnuts for decades. All of them were palatable but not the one. Like everyone living on the Aina, Malasadas was that treat that the young and old enjoyed on a daily basis.
Now living on the mainland, except when visiting, it's been many moons since I've enjoyed "authentic"Portuguese doughnuts, until Mo opened up Manuela Maladadas (huge on the BigIsland). I can tell they were authentic when Mo told me that he had a lot of trial and error making his first run batches. This is not Pillsbury sprinkled in sugar. These have that somewhat doughy middle - not cakey texture inside. Locals know what I'm talking about. Along the years, Malasadas has evolved by adding fillers such as Lilikoi, pistachio, Bavarian crème and more! I admit my search is over I finally found real Malasadas.
