Walter's Pagoda is on the east side of Palmer Avenue across from Mamaroneck High School. There is a small parking lot next to Walter's but I usually find street parking, in front. Postcards written to Walters, from all around the world, are posted in front & fun to read while we wait. We line up in front of the roadside landmark, place our order & pay. We can see the hot dogs on the large grill getting basted with butter. The line moves quickly or I'm busy chatting. In minutes, our name is called & our order is given in a bag to take away or a tray to enjoy on the picnic tables north of the hot dog stand. Walter's make their own mustard relish that is perfect. I prefer the potato puffs yet my family enjoys the sweet potato fries. The homemade Italian ices are delicious, watermelon & berry are my favorites in lemonade. They sell hats, tee shirts & magnets. We can now order delivery & pick up directly from Walters, they even have gift cards. Walter's now has a food truck, delivers through grub hub, door dash or Uber Eats. I am not a hot dog fan but oh boy! I get why this place has its reputation. They have a great menu with lots of choices and they have a nice area where you can sit, eat, relax and enjoy the summer weather. I tried out their Nutella milkshake as well as the tiny hot dogs & the normal sized ones. ALL AMAZING. We kept getting back online to re-order more hotdogs. Eventually we even got a free bottle of Walters Mustard. It is the perfect place to go to on a summer day to connect and unwind. I very much recommend the Nutella milkshake. Walter's is s a hot dog stand, popular by demand. It's a "must go to" when you are visiting Larchmont, Mamaroneck, or nearby towns. Now, I need to tell you. It's not popular by demand and a "must go to" because I said that. The reason being, many new comers say that the must go by Walter's because someone told them how good the hot dogs were and the service. I've been visiting Walter's for 24 years. I know, it's hard to convince you because this is my first review and check in, but I'm not here to convince you of how long I've been eating Walter's hot dogs. I'm only here to convince you that you need to come by and witness for yourself. Walter's is a hut that sells hot dogs. They used to have a table where you can sit but it's predominantly take out place. They do have several trucks as well so you can have a catered event. Waiter's hot dogs are split in half and served flat. I really prefer my traditional hotdogs on the bun but this works and they are really delicious. I had one regular dog with ketchup and their mustard relish mix, the bun is toasted and that gives a nice crunch and mild flavor, nothing tangy. I also got a chili dog and it was quite different. A small portion of Walter's style chili, it also was pretty good and not overwhelmed by the chili. The tater tots were different they weren't regular tots it was more potatoie if that makes since. I discovered that they have a vegan dog. If I had viewed the menu closer before ordering, I would have tried it. The also have shakes and other is tems. Pics of menu posted. I can see why this is an institution. My favorite bites were from the chili and milk shake. Loved seeing the hot dogs and buns grilled on a flat top stove and loved the size of the hot dogs. Overall though, besides the carmalzation bites from the flat top I wasn't blown away from the hot dogs. They tasted a little watery to me, I have only been once so maybe it was fluke. That being said, I loved the vibes and food enough to want to come back everytime I'm in the area. Service was friendly and efficient. read more

Walter's is one of those places that'll get an occasional look when we want some good hot dogs and some great milkshakes (and the occasional surprise, like at AnimeNYC). Just as usual, a couple of Big Walts with mustard and a single with ketchup, along with Oreo and Salted Caramel Cowboy shakes. This time we tried the latter with malt added, and I won't order it any other way from now on. In addition, they had a watermelon lemonade available, which we also had to give a try--quite refreshing and flavorful, with the only disappointment being its limited nature. Additionally, they have a nice outdoor seating arrangement that feels very much like a classic barbecue or picnic area, which is especially great for the season. I forgot how much I like Walter's. It must be 20 years now since an industry colleague asked me and a mutual friend if we've been to Walter's Hot Dogs yet. I was a neophyte in the Hudson Valley at that point and hadn't been, but made amends right away. It became a fairly regular stop during summers my first few years up here: weekly drives down the Hudson Valley to Long Island were made more palatable knowing I could swing by Walter's on the way home. A change of jobs meant I had not been back in a while, but I corrected that today on the way home from the airport. It's just such a cool and friendly spot. The split homemade hot dogs and mustard, the fries and just the entire experience are wonderul. I've met friends there, and everyone loves it--the food and the whole experience. It's another great spot in our region. Oh, and it's been there over 100 years and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. read more

I have had Walter's on my "to do" list for so long now. Finally got to have some of their fantastic Hot Dogs! We got there right around 11:30 and the seating area was pretty much the high school from across the street. Thankfully, once we got in line, their lunch was ending to they skeedaddled back to class. I placed my order for a single, and a puffy dog, both with mustard. My Brother got the same. How were they? Amazing! Hot Dogs- These hot dogs are a blend of pork/veal/beef. They slice them in half and cook them on the grill so both sides get nice and charred/cooked. Their mustard is like a spicy brown style mustard, and they are served on soft steamed buns. What does that equal? A damn fine hot dog! The chew of the dog was great, and that mustard was phenomenal (I should have bought a bottle of it). I could see why all the high school kids were eating here...I would too.....like every single day! lol. Puffy Dog- Same as the hot dog, but they add 2 potato puffs inside the bun. It created a nice texture, but I liked the straight up dog better. Service was great at the window, and the building is very cool! Historic Landmark! If I lived near by, this would definitely be my spot, and if I'm ever back near NYC, I'm taking the drive up here to get some more dogs. They were awesome! Truly A Westchester staple. The classic building that encases this hot dog stand is a beautiful and historic, matching the food itself. A Water's hot dog is unlike a normal one that you'd find at a baseball game or in the grocery store. It has a unique flavor that has stood the test of time. The curly fries are perfectly seasoned and crispy and this might be one of the only places in Westchester you can still get an egg cream (haven't had one here in a while but it's still on the menu!) I came for their 106 year anniversary since hot dogs were $1.06 and man, did it hit the spot. I drank that float so fast it was almost gone by the time my hot dogs were ready. I saved the strawberry shortcake sundae in the freezer while I ate my dinner and honestly I was a bit disappointed. The sponge cake wasn't soft enough for my liking and the strawberries didn't seem fresh but its not a normal menu item so I can't knock it too much. Everything else was just so perfect. read more

Have been pretty obsessed with Walter's since I had them recently at a food truck so of course we had to make stop at their OG location in Mamaroneck. There hot dogs pack a blend of veal, pork and beef grilled with a secret sauce, toasted bun and their mustard which is also to die for. They also have a variety of other things including French fries, straight and curly. We got their fries as a side, don't love them but could be worse, the hot dogs is truly where it's at. Walter's is a historical landmark, get the double, you won't regret it. In the summertime they have a nice patio around to the side of the parking lot with picnic tables and sometimes live music. Deemed by someone I trust in the food world as the "best hot dog ever" so it was no surprise she brought the whole family out here for a celebration. They were indeed incredible hot dogs! We went the whole day without being sure if they were pork, beef or veal and it turns out they are a combination of all three. We were able to take over most of that back picnic area for a big gathering and they brought out batches of the hot dogs whenever we needed them so they were always hot a fresh. Sliced down the middle, they are grilled perfectly. I am a ketchup and mustard girl (sue me) and the mustard here is just the absolute best hot dog mustard. Makes sense because it is home made! On top of hot dogs, we tried a few of their milkshakes and malted and I have never chugged something so fast. Get. The. Malted. While this is just a hot dog stand with lots of pic nic tables, the vibe is fantastic, clean and very spacious. Truth be told, my party adventured here because of Kevin Dillon from Entourage. He grew up in Mamaroneck and mentioned how these are his favorite hot dogs in an interview. I can totally see why....and so reasonably priced. I ordered a Walter's single with "everything". It was very good, never had tried the split hot dog concept before. Because I ordered other items, I didn't order the double but in the future plan on trying the double and a chili dog. I also had the order of 5 Pigs In The Blanket. They did not disappoint! You can get 10 also if you plan on sharing. The Blanket was baked around the mini dog just perfect. A crust that was buttery and flaky. I dipped the pigs in mustard, just yummy . For sides, I had the curly fries and the new potato spuds. The fries were lightly seasoned, they were nice and crisp.The spuds were so good - like little mashed potatoes wrapped in a crispy potato coating - crunchy and delish. I had to have an old fashioned chocolate Egg Cream to drink. Ahhh, nostalgia at it's finest - highly recommend it. Ever since I was a little kid playing baseball in the sandlots of Brooklyn, I couldn't wait for the game to end. The reason is because I knew there would be a delicious grilled Hebrew National, Sabretts or Nathan's frankfurter waiting fot me and my friends. Some of my friends would douse ketchup on their franks but not this guy. I was taught to go w/ mustard, sauerkraut and red onions b/c these condiments made the grilled frank a gourmet meal! Fast forward 40 years and the kid from Brooklyn still can't get enough of the perfectly grilled all beef frankfurter. Well I was in White Plains recently for a meeting and a friend of mine kept raving about a place called Walter's near where we were. As soon as our meeting ended we jumped in my colleague's and drove 10 minutes to a giant building with a green pagoda like roof. The place looked more like an ancient Chinese temple than a hot dog stand. The gates were down but there were a handful of students from the school across the street. We quickly parked and got on the ever growing line. I studied the menu and was ready to pounce on two doubles and curly fries. Doubles are two single hot dogs sliced in half on a bun. The secret sauce at Walter's is the home made mustard. When our orders was ready we grabbed our food and went back to the car to savor our delicious meal from the hot dog God's. The size of the hot dog was kind of smaller than what I was used to getting. After one bite I knew right then and there what all the fuss was about. The double was small but very yummy. I thank the lord that I had tge foresight to order two doubles. The curly fries were very as good as well. After lunch my colleague and we're contemplating getting back on line for another round, but we decided to get on the highway back towards NYC. I would highly recommend Walter's Hot Dogs if you're ever in that neck of the woods. read more

The last time I was here, I was in my single digits in age. As a kid, my father would take me here frequently enough and I always looked forward to it. I wasn't sure how they did it, but their hot dogs - sliced down the middle - were always excellent. Excellent to the point that even though it's been decades since I've been here, they were by default the place to where all hot dogs were compared. There just wasn't any better hot dogs anywhere except from Walters. Truth be told, as much as I always remembered this place fondly and this was the place where they made the hot dogs perfectly, I had forgotten this place existed in the physical form. I got older, 'Walters' became just another memory from my childhood. No matter where I went, no hot dog ever could or would compare to the ones I had from Walters when I was 4-8 years old, even though I stopped being taken here. It was always like this. Once in a while I'd remember this place, but always assumed it was gone like every other place from my childhood. I never even looked it up. Then by chance very recently, I was walking around White Plains and saw a hot dog place called 'Walters'. I wondered if it was the same owner(s) that relocated or something. Thanks to the power of smart phones, I was able to quickly look up that my original Walters was still in the same place in Mamaroneck with the same unique building that I remembered and from that moment, I made it my business to get here as soon as possible. And that day was today. Keep in mind, I'm not a hot dog guy - I have them on occasion and that's it. It never mattered if one was good or decent, it just never compared to the ones I had from Walters when I was a child. When I decided to finally come back here after decades, I had wondered if my illusion would change or perhaps my taste buds did. I was almost briefly hesitant to try them because part of me didn't want my longstanding image of Walters' great hot dogs to be ruined by something that changed - whether it was ownership or me. But, I just had to try and I did. The hot dogs tasted great and still sliced down the middle. I got both with mustard (which I never did as a child) and I scoffed them both down in quick fashion. Yes, that taste was still there. I don't know exactly what they do to them, but whatever it is it's right. Walters still has the greatest hotdogs around. Period. I'm not sure if the menu changed or grew larger over the years, but they had plenty of other offerings. The curly fries (which I also ordered) were good. There's plenty of other options on the menu - from shakes to actual merchandise. You can even pick up hot dogs, buns, and mustard to play Walters at home. I ended up getting some mustard for the hell of it. I came near opening and it was already crowded. I expected a little wait, but my order came very quickly. They have quite a good system in place. There is a fairly large outdoor area for seats/tables - I imagine it's great for the summer weather. There is a high school across the street - which I never realized as a kid sitting on their steps and eating my awesome hot dog back then. Those kids are lucky they have this right across the street. They probably already know it since there were a lot of students there at the same time I was. Parking is street. Only had dealings with the cashier, who was nice. I went out of my way to get here after so long and now that it's fresh on the brain and now that I know this place is still here after literally decades, I will be returning often enough. It won't be for the nostalgia anymore as I did that just today. It will be for the still reigning best hot dogs around (and maybe other things off the menu as well). Once a week we had an appointment.. and we stopped by Walter's stand for a double hotdog.. for each of us...I don't know who was more excited..my mother or my sister and me.. Great spot to stop for lunch off i-95. Lots of street parking. It has a cute outdoor dining area with picnic tables under mature trees that provided a shady place to enjoy lunch with our two pups. (They enjoyed a hot dog too.) I have a peanut allergy and wow, they took that seriously here. They said they don't use peanut oil for cooking/frying, but do have peanut butter for their shakes. So, they explained how they would clean the shake machine and use fresh gloves if I ordered one. Amazing service! The line moves fast and the food came out quickly. The hot dogs are solid, though next time would get a two dog to one bun. It was a little bready with just one. Their house made mustard is fantastic! We took home 4 bottles. We enjoyed the sides most. - Sweet potato waffle fries were simple, crunchy, and delicious. - Potato puffs are basically fried balls of mashed potatoes. Kept wishing I had a side of gravy! - Watermelon ice freeze with Sprite is just perfect if you like something sweet. Lemon ice with lemonade was perfect for something more tart. The pretzel bread is amazing I could just eat it by itself. It inspired me to go to Wegmans and get their pretzel buns and have everything on that now. The hot dogs are very flavorful. The curly fries have wonderful texture and flavorful spices. The peanut butter shake was delicious. Got the whip, but you don't really need it. Their famous mustard is great, it is a bold flavor. I like mustard but I'm not a mustard person so instead of mustard on the hot dog I like it on the side and I can dip it. I also liked the combo of dipping mustard/mayo with the hot dog. I've been to their White Plains location too and got the salted caramel shake, my favorite. The shakes are flavorful, thick, and creamy. I have not tried the cowboy extra thick shake, but I can't image it even thicker. The past week they were having an issue with their vendor for the potato puffs so I could not get them yet. Also not sure if that affected their sweet potato fries because we just ordered the sweet potato fries at White Plains and they were regular sweet potato fries and not sweet pot waffle fries and were also just okay - good texture but not as amazing as everything else. In my opinion, skip the footlong and go for the regular dog. It's longer, but it's just meat and bread, not worth the charge. I got the double puffy dog. The double dog is definitely the right answer for meat per dollar and the potato puffs go perfectly on there. My friend got a separate side of puffs and they are heavenly. At Walter's, it's all about the bun! The frankfurter sausage itself isn't spectacular, and the toppings at Walter's are not particularly imaginative or flavorful. Where Walter's Hot Dogs stands out from the competition is in the bun, which is nicely toasted and buttered. I have heard that it is difficult to find good egg cream, even in the New York City area, but apparently, the egg cream at Walter's is delicious. The fries are pretty average, but I would recommend the potato puffs. You order at the counter. The service at the counter is fine. It is not rude, nor is it particularly memorable. The Asian Pagoda architecture is what passes for interesting ambiance at this outdoor hot dog stand. A sign near Walter's Hot Dogs tells you that exotic architecture like this was a trend in the 1920s when this particular location of Walter's Hot Dogs opened.
