But what it's most famous for is the selection of exotic meats that are flown in from South Africa. These include crocodile, springbok, wildebeest and zebra. It's clear that they are aiming for the speciality niche in the Bristol market, as they also offer quite a selection of eggs, with pretty speckled quail eggs in a basket on the counter. Then there's things like chitterling and homemade faggots listed on one of the several sandwich boards outside, and don't forget the pork and beef dripping, white and black pudding and tripe! But the best item, to my mind, is the 'handraised pork pies'! Someone please tell me how you had rear a pork pie! Joking aside, this butchers is great. I tend to go for the more conventional cuts of meat (and by their own admission most other people do too - they say they stock things like crocodile and zebra for the novelty value so that people can try it once). I also like a bit of black pudding every now and then, and it's good to know that there's a butchers with an exhaustive selection of stock in Bristol, so that I can guarantee that I will always get what I want.

The sheer selection in this old school butchers shop is second to none. Prime cuts of beef, pork and chicken are supplied to local schools, nursing homes and restaurants as well as the hungry locals. Pigeon, pheasant, partridge and venison are some of my other favourites gracing the menu board alongside veal and rabbit. They don't just buy the stuff in and knock it back out, but they live it. They know it. Behind the scenes are some of the cleanest most professional kitchens I have ever seen, where they make all their delights fresh and on the day - just try their 4oz lamb and mint burgers for a mere 50p! With ostrich, camel and crocodile meat as well as quail eggs being standard runners - you simply can't walk past this well stacked, well planned shop.

The taste of D Prings products are truly awesome if you wanna impress people with your BBQ skills half the battles in selecting the right meat. The queues are quickly serviced so you don't have to wait long. The butchers were friendly enough and the price was very good I go there whenever I want a good BBQ selection. The best cuts are always available so if you want it just ask, they'll come back with a great steak. I had 8 1/4 pounders and 12 sausages for just over £5 that's great value for money.

We'd maybe stop into a cafe for egg and chips and my nan would, of course, know the owner. We'd go to a couple of pound shops. Not to look about, mind you. But because my nan wanted very specific things from there. And then, before heading to the bus stop, we'd go to the butchers "to pick up something for our tea". That was the routine. And now that I'm an adult myself, I can't help but smile whenever I dive in to grab a steak "for my tea". Of course, that smile also comes from the fact that in this particular butcher, it's not uncommon to see the meat cut right in front of you if you go at the right time of the day. There's something visceral and satisfying about watching your food being sliced up right in front of you. It's like being primal by proxy. And the prices on top of this... they're just the greatest thing ever. Buying a steak big enough to beat a man to death with for pocket change gives an immense amount of satisfaction. And then heading back to the cave with a hunk of meat over your shoulder? You feel like a hunter. What's not to love?

One of the main reasons that they have maintained such a successful business for so long is their commitment to quality and stocking meats that the locals and Cardiff as a whole appreciate. This includes carrying the meat products from regionally farmed animals such as, welsh beef, welsh lamb, free range poultry, and free range woodland pork, (the latter being their speciality). The level of service that you receive at this butchers is second to none, and acts as a real sweetener considering that the price tags are slightly higher than you would see in lesser establishments. Advice is liberally provided including how to select the right cut of meat for your needs, as well as recommendations on how to cook it. They will even suggest the best ways to store the meat, and get the most out of your purchase for your money... using the bones to make stock etc... This is a great family business!

Their gammon and cooked meats are second to none. Having a specialist independent pork butcher on my doorstep is a real privilege. I have lived in London and travelled all over the world but I think the quality of the food served here is comparable with anywhere in the country. When i first visited the floors were wooden and had sawdust on them. Clifton Street was a thriving shopping area then too. A lot has changed but Todd's has managed to stay reassuringly the same. All the produce is freshly made or cooked on the premises and includes ham, pork, gammon, sausages, faggots, dripping, chitlings pork pies, brawn and polony. They also sell cooked chicken, and my personal favourites tongue and salt beef. Perhaps someone should give Jamie Oliver a call...?

Juicy sausages of twenty different flavours (the jalapeno ones knock your socks off), thick steaks, roasting joints and stewing meat and more. They know what they're talking about and can advise on the best meats and condiments for your dinner party or Sunday roast. The cheeses are lush too (although quite basic English cheddars, red leicesters etc). A serious word of warning. The meat-eaters of Southville know all about the delights of Bob Wherlock. Consequently, I have queued for a very long time on a Saturday morning to get served (over half an hour sometimes). The people snake down North Street waiting for their sunday roasting joint or chicken. The Christmas turkey rush is even worse - but that's a sure sign it's very good meat. If that's not enough to prove to you how great this place is (and you've yet to taste the meat) Bob himself recently won a local food hero award. Well deserved.
