I like to saunter along, barter with the chirpy market folk and pick up various things for my tea - buffalo mozzarellla, honey, jam, crumbly bread and slabs of fresh meat. Don't go there when you're hungry - it's dangerous as you'll come away with twice as much. Head down to Corn Street, near St. Nick's market, every Wednesday 9.30 am -2.30pm.

The focus is on fresh food from local producers; its the farmers themselves that are selling you the goods. There's more or less everything you could imagine finding on a farm, with highlights including the various organic meat stalls (v. expensive) and the fruit stalls later in the summer, when you can get some of the recent strawberry crop People know about their goods and love to talk about it. This isn't a supermarket experience and people are keen to have a chat - it's a bit like being in the countryside, funnily enough. It runs on a Wednesday, so if you're working in the city centre (it's based by St. Nicholas Market on Corn Street) treat yourself in your coffee/lunch break and pick up some crusty bread and cheddar cheese. You'll feel much better than you would queueing up with the other suits, even if it does cost a little bit more.

They are also one of the cheapest meal options in St Nicks Market at around £2.80 for an amazing sausage baguette with leeks, onions, mustard and red (eugh) or brown (yay!) sauce. You can also mix and match your sausages, so if like me you can't choose between the lamb or pork (with cider and mustard) you can just get both. I think the pork wins it, but only by a nose (or a snout, weyhey, I thank you!). The man who owns the sausage shop is so lovely and welcoming. I have eaten a lot of his sausages (...er) and this has never changed; he's never had an off day being a nice guy. The sausage sandwiches/baguettes are quite hard to manoeuvre into your mouth, because the sausages are so big and juicy, so there is the option to have sausage and mash. This is a great option for lunch as it's so filling you are sorted until tea time.

Ones to try:: Lucifer - whooo mamma hot and spicy but very tasty St Nicks 1743 - their own secret blend is actually my favourite - quite traditional pork and herbs but full of flavour Gloucestershire Old Spot - from the spottiest of pigs and a nice basic sausage if you don't like anything too fancy Works out pretty cheap considering the size and density of the sausage too. If you want to get stuffed by sausages (OK I'll stop now), then they also have an on-site bbq for a sausage and mash for lunch - for big appetites only!

Or I could head to BRB, get a bag of crisps, an apple, Bristol evening post and a a can of something alcoholic... the choice varies from week to week. usually I don't hang on, and BRB can supply me with just what I am after. I think you know that you're going to be paying a little more than you expect when you head into a mini supermarket like this, but then it provides you with a stangley warm feeling when you leave with your purchases... ... is that a bit wierd? ... Is it completley normal? Either way I think I can garantee you contentment from BRB, I know a big statement for such an average shop... but i'll stand by it, that and my overuse of the 3 full stops pause in this review... A vaguely more enjoyable, and more local shopping experience. There's a good range of English and Caribbean fresh and frozen food and groceries, including yams, plantains and jerk spices which you can't readily find elsewhere. Everything you want and more - newspapers and a decent selection of beers, ciders and wines too. Just when you think you've reached the end of the shop, on it goes. There's a cashpoint (that charges for withdrawals, boo) and even books, DVDs, cards and gifts. BRB = better than your average local shop.

Their cheese range is fantastic, a must for any cheese and wine party you are having and talking of wine - check out their organic range just behind you. My favourite bit is the self-service grains section where you bring your own tub and woosh out rice and seeds to your own order. In the back room you can do a similar thing and refill your Ecover bottles from a big vat - including washing up and clothes washing liquids. As with all collections of quality food and eco items, it is a little more expensive but such a friendly and nice store you won't begrudge it.

Also, for a cheese fan like myself, the Deli offers a brilliant selection, so if I ever have that little bit of extra cash in my pocket i'll spash out on some extra mature chedder ... i'm drooling a bit just thinking about it... The service is brilliant here, the staff all embody the ethos of the shop, and you feel like they will offer you a hand with any queries you can have. There's also a nice seating area outside (covered) which is great to sit a people watch for a while as you sip the fine coffee you've bought inside... that or a great local ale from the selection they have!

But you gotta ask for it. As a Brit and a Bristolian, I have to say that this is about as good as it gets. However, I feel compelled to write one extra thing though. Although the quality of their pies is beyond question. I have to admit that it's not the sort of thing that most people would serve up at home. Normally, there's your pie, then there's your potatoes and veggies, all served in dollops, sort of, kind of, approximately. The presentation at Pie Minster is different. If my Mum served me a pie dinner with the same sort of presentation that Pie Minister does, I'd think that my Mum had gone off her rocker. However, what Pie Minster does is definitely a very good second best. Another thing, at £8.50 as the normal price for the Mothership, I have to say that there's plenty of other ways to spend a lot less (like a fiver or so) and get a half way decent Indian/Chinese/whatever. However, those are take away meals and at least at Pie Minister, you can sit down. They also have a "frequent visitor" type card. The card is free, and you just get it stamped every time you buy a pie and/or hot drink. Once you've reached the required total (9 I think), you get a free pie/hot drink. They take credit/debit cards.

They also do takeaway but no-one in your office will be your friend if you make them smell such deliciousness when they only have a ham sandwich and a packet of low fat crisps.
