One of the main reasons that they have maintained such a successful business for so long is their commitment to quality and stocking meats that the locals and Cardiff as a whole appreciate. This includes carrying the meat products from regionally farmed animals such as, welsh beef, welsh lamb, free range poultry, and free range woodland pork, (the latter being their speciality). The level of service that you receive at this butchers is second to none, and acts as a real sweetener considering that the price tags are slightly higher than you would see in lesser establishments. Advice is liberally provided including how to select the right cut of meat for your needs, as well as recommendations on how to cook it. They will even suggest the best ways to store the meat, and get the most out of your purchase for your money... using the bones to make stock etc... This is a great family business!

Their gammon and cooked meats are second to none. Having a specialist independent pork butcher on my doorstep is a real privilege. I have lived in London and travelled all over the world but I think the quality of the food served here is comparable with anywhere in the country. When i first visited the floors were wooden and had sawdust on them. Clifton Street was a thriving shopping area then too. A lot has changed but Todd's has managed to stay reassuringly the same. All the produce is freshly made or cooked on the premises and includes ham, pork, gammon, sausages, faggots, dripping, chitlings pork pies, brawn and polony. They also sell cooked chicken, and my personal favourites tongue and salt beef. Perhaps someone should give Jamie Oliver a call...?

As you enter the market you will be greeted by the same smell of fresh fish that has filled my childhood memories of this place. It's hard to find a traditional butcher that can compete with the availability of meat in large supermarkets, but there are still plenty surviving inside Cardiff's Central Market. Out of the long stream of butchers along one side of the market one of the slightly larger ones is J T Morgan's. Its range of meats and other meat-related items is huge considering the space its working with. They've got steaks, chickens, chops, slices, pasties and pies. If you're a vegetarian then it's quite unlikely you'll be checking out reviews of a butcher, but they do have a little area dedicated, bizarrely, to olives.

A family butchers that have moved with the times, they are presently one of the most recognized purveyors of free range and organic meat and poultry in South Wales. As well as selling to the public they also supply some of Cardiff's better eating establishments, like the recently opened, and very wonderful, North Star in Maindy. The North Star regularly change their specialty dishes, a decision that is often prompted by the advice J T Morgan, who tips them the wink about all the best seasonal cuts on offer. I love this butchers for a whole host of reasons... the fact that they have stuck to their roots regardless of the recognition that they have received, (all deserved), and because they are committed to supplying organic meat even though fewer butchers these days carry it. The recession has a lot to answer for!

Though it does like…read moreto wallow in porky goodness it does everything you'd expect a local butcher shop to offer. Plonked down on the increasingly rough looking Clifton Street, despite the council's "best" efforts with its new crazy yellow brick road paving scheme, the Danish Bacon Shop is a beacon of friendliness. The guy behind the counter is more than happy to chat away and offer tips and I've seen him pop a bike that's someone has left outside his shop inside, in case some rapscallion pinches it. The Danish Bacon Shop opens later than the other butcher on Clifton Street, so wins points for convenience and is a simple, clean and well run neighbourhood butchers. They vacuum packs of smoked back bacon for £1.99 are very tasty and good value for money and worth a visit in themselves.

I use both of them…read moredepending on what I need, but the funny thing about them is that they both specialise in pork... which makes them a bit like buses doesn't it!? The Danish Bacon Shop also stays open later than J W Todd and Son Butchers, so inevitably I use it when the competition is closed as well. The Danish Bacon Shop is probably the more modern of the two; it was established in 1968, whereas J W Todd was first founded in the late 1800's, although tjis has very little to do with the present day approach to retailing meat, particularly in the case of the Danish Bacon Shop. It's true that J W Todd have maintained a 'family butchers' feel to their shop, but the Danish Bacon Shop looks and feels a bit more like a deli in some respects. Nevertheless it sells all of the traditional cuts of meat as well as selling condiments and associated products. As with all of the businesses on Clifton Street, they have seen a dramatic decrease in revenue since the new one way system was implemented about a year ago. It's estimated that the cut equates to a 30% reduction in income, which is a significant blow to a small business. John Evans, who owns the building that houses the Danish Bacon Shop, is extremely active in opposing the new road system, but some consider any efforts channelled in this direction to be a lost cause. Some business owners seem to think that the council will capitulate, and return the two way traffic system in time, whilst others seem sure that they will do no such thing. It's a wonder where everyone is getting their information from, as there seems to be no consistency in opinion!
