The taste of D Prings products are truly awesome if you wanna impress people with your BBQ skills half the battles in selecting the right meat. The queues are quickly serviced so you don't have to wait long. The butchers were friendly enough and the price was very good I go there whenever I want a good BBQ selection. The best cuts are always available so if you want it just ask, they'll come back with a great steak. I had 8 1/4 pounders and 12 sausages for just over £5 that's great value for money.

There'd be…read morea monumental trek up Cathedral Road that would seem to take weeks, but knowing my grandmother's hatred for physical exertion, probably only took an hour or so. We'd maybe stop into a cafe for egg and chips and my nan would, of course, know the owner. We'd go to a couple of pound shops. Not to look about, mind you. But because my nan wanted very specific things from there. And then, before heading to the bus stop, we'd go to the butchers "to pick up something for our tea". That was the routine. And now that I'm an adult myself, I can't help but smile whenever I dive in to grab a steak "for my tea". Of course, that smile also comes from the fact that in this particular butcher, it's not uncommon to see the meat cut right in front of you if you go at the right time of the day. There's something visceral and satisfying about watching your food being sliced up right in front of you. It's like being primal by proxy. And the prices on top of this... they're just the greatest thing ever. Buying a steak big enough to beat a man to death with for pocket change gives an immense amount of satisfaction. And then heading back to the cave with a hunk of meat over your shoulder? You feel like a hunter. What's not to love?

One of the main reasons that they have maintained such a successful business for so long is their commitment to quality and stocking meats that the locals and Cardiff as a whole appreciate. This includes carrying the meat products from regionally farmed animals such as, welsh beef, welsh lamb, free range poultry, and free range woodland pork, (the latter being their speciality). The level of service that you receive at this butchers is second to none, and acts as a real sweetener considering that the price tags are slightly higher than you would see in lesser establishments. Advice is liberally provided including how to select the right cut of meat for your needs, as well as recommendations on how to cook it. They will even suggest the best ways to store the meat, and get the most out of your purchase for your money... using the bones to make stock etc... This is a great family business!

Their gammon and cooked meats are second to none. Having a specialist independent pork butcher on my doorstep is a real privilege. I have lived in London and travelled all over the world but I think the quality of the food served here is comparable with anywhere in the country. When i first visited the floors were wooden and had sawdust on them. Clifton Street was a thriving shopping area then too. A lot has changed but Todd's has managed to stay reassuringly the same. All the produce is freshly made or cooked on the premises and includes ham, pork, gammon, sausages, faggots, dripping, chitlings pork pies, brawn and polony. They also sell cooked chicken, and my personal favourites tongue and salt beef. Perhaps someone should give Jamie Oliver a call...?

However lovely, kind daughter that I am, I recently agreed to pick up some items from the Martin Player butchers for my mother, and boy what a discovery. As someone who does not frequent butchers I had no idea that their produce is not limited to meat. Martin Player stocks a wide variety of Welsh cheeses, preserves, and olives many of which are locally sourced. The olives in particular are far superior to any you could buy in the supermarket, I generally go for the mixed olives with chilli which have the added benefit of being stoneless (makes eating so much easier). What really made my experience at Martin Player great though, was discovering that they sell homemade apple chutney, which I have been after for a very long time and which, much to my disappointment none of the big name stores stock. Whilst I can't personally pass comment on their meat, the carnivores in my family all swear by it, refusing to buy their pork chops from any other butchers. Finally Martin Player should really be commended on their support for the environment, by providing regular customers with free, environmentally friendly hessian bags, not a practice I've seen many other independent stores undertaking.

Though it does like…read moreto wallow in porky goodness it does everything you'd expect a local butcher shop to offer. Plonked down on the increasingly rough looking Clifton Street, despite the council's "best" efforts with its new crazy yellow brick road paving scheme, the Danish Bacon Shop is a beacon of friendliness. The guy behind the counter is more than happy to chat away and offer tips and I've seen him pop a bike that's someone has left outside his shop inside, in case some rapscallion pinches it. The Danish Bacon Shop opens later than the other butcher on Clifton Street, so wins points for convenience and is a simple, clean and well run neighbourhood butchers. They vacuum packs of smoked back bacon for £1.99 are very tasty and good value for money and worth a visit in themselves.

I use both of them…read moredepending on what I need, but the funny thing about them is that they both specialise in pork... which makes them a bit like buses doesn't it!? The Danish Bacon Shop also stays open later than J W Todd and Son Butchers, so inevitably I use it when the competition is closed as well. The Danish Bacon Shop is probably the more modern of the two; it was established in 1968, whereas J W Todd was first founded in the late 1800's, although tjis has very little to do with the present day approach to retailing meat, particularly in the case of the Danish Bacon Shop. It's true that J W Todd have maintained a 'family butchers' feel to their shop, but the Danish Bacon Shop looks and feels a bit more like a deli in some respects. Nevertheless it sells all of the traditional cuts of meat as well as selling condiments and associated products. As with all of the businesses on Clifton Street, they have seen a dramatic decrease in revenue since the new one way system was implemented about a year ago. It's estimated that the cut equates to a 30% reduction in income, which is a significant blow to a small business. John Evans, who owns the building that houses the Danish Bacon Shop, is extremely active in opposing the new road system, but some consider any efforts channelled in this direction to be a lost cause. Some business owners seem to think that the council will capitulate, and return the two way traffic system in time, whilst others seem sure that they will do no such thing. It's a wonder where everyone is getting their information from, as there seems to be no consistency in opinion!

Most of them do come in bulk, which can be a little problematic (and why I've only awarded 4 stars for what would otherwise be a five star place) but you can sometimes manage to find smaller loads. The service doesn't stand out in my memory as being brilliant but as we were buying the food we were all talking and trying to organise the meal that we were having as a house (there are 7 of us, with two vegetarians, so it took some doing!) so it's probably just that we kind of ignored them...
