    New York hoagie
    Nick S.

This place is awesome. Cans of A&W in the fridge, boxes of Reese's cups behind the counter and proper pastrami in the grinders. Someone's done their homework! Fair warning: the sandwiches are ENORMOUS. If you're not ready to consume an elephant-sized meat torpedo you may be better off sharing with a trusty comrade.

New York Deli serves a wide variety of bagels, hoagies, sandwiches and cakes and its very American in its portion size. Supersized subs they really are. That being said they are also more expensive 'cos of their size . I don't often come away with change from a fiver and thats without cake! I despise Mayonnaise and am a little bit picky so I will go out of my way to find sandwiches that are made up freshly and I can decide exactly whats in it. One of best friends first took me there and I have to say I was a bit underwhelmed by the sandwich but loved the cheesecake . It was very quiet and the person servicing us didn't seem very enthusiastic. Overall If i'm in that area I might stop by but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

The generously proportioned hoagies, bagels and sandwiches from New York Deli are all freshly made up while you wait - which means you get to choose exactly which combination of fillings you want, and how much of each. With some tables downstairs, a few upstairs on a tiny mezzanine seating area, and a large table and bench outside in the arcade, you can usually find somewhere to perch - unless it's peak lunchtime rush-hour, when the queue can snake out of the door. Whether you go for the popular and overloaded New York hoagie with pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, thousand island sauce, and salad (£4.75), or a more unusual combination of your own creation, you're unlikely to leave disappointed. One of my favourites is the cinnamon raison bagel with cream cheese and honey (£2.30)- a great brunch choice! It might seem a bit expensive to pay £4-£5 for a sandwich, but when you think you could easily spend £3 on a runty, dry, pre-packaged sarnie from Boots, it doesn't seem so bad.

The menu changes daily and offers a wide variety of chicken (anything and everything from a mild honey mustard to the HOT HOT HOT Bomber's own recipe scotch bonnet/ghost chilli Perkbomb) and pork options, and occasionally lamb, falafel or home-made fish fingers. The sandwiches come as small boys (a small soft or crusty roll) or big boys (a bap the size of your face!); alternatively they offer salad boxes or jacket potatoes if you don't quite fancy a sandwich. If you'd prefer something light, there's almost always a fantastic soup (I had carrot and coriander today), but if you're feeling famished I dare you to take on the atomic bomb which is a combination of any three meats and all the salad you like! Its location means that it's perfect for those working in Cardiff city centre (or the Bay) as well as those indulging in a bit of shopping, although I regularly travel out of my way to treat myself to a cheeky sandwich. If you've got time on your hands, I'd also suggest taking a seat and having some tea or coffee and a slice of cake. Having recently been awarded 5 out of 5 on the Food Hygiene Rating, it is safe to say that Bomber's cannot be beaten on quality, cleanliness or service; as well as doing a fantastic job of supporting local businesses by sourcing local produce.

At lunchtime queues can snake out of the door. This place has very fast service, with a good amount of staff who are able to cope with the workload during busy spells well. They also have a good range of sandwich fillings, although these become more and more limited as the day wears on into early afternoon. The prices here are very good; a salad box stuffed to the brim with you choice of goodies will set you back only £2.50, while sandwiches start from £1.70 and baguettes are not too much more. If sandwiches and a fast lunch are what you're after, this is a place that will see you well.

It's sat on the busy traffic lights and crossroads of Cathedral Road and Cowbridge Road East, so it's within walking distance of a lot of business people needing lunchtime snacks. What's good about Posh Nosh, once you've got past the hideous name, is that both the food and the prices are good. You can get sandwiches made up with your choice of fillings from less than £2, or you can get a healthy salad box for just a couple (or perhaps a few) pounds. The staff are also very fast and efficient, so you don't have to wait around for too long usually, although queues can get quite hefty around peak lunchtime periods.

This is probably my favourite bar in Cardiff bay…read more One of the reasons for this is because most people do not regard it as a bar (more a coffee shop) and it is therefore never over run unlike the bars over the other side of the bay like Salt and Terra Nova. Sitting inside is very pleasant as are the staff, especially the manager, who I think i called Hugo but to me its big selling point is its outside area. It over looks the oval basin and faces the sun. I have spent many a summer day having a few cheeky ones chatting away whilst the sun goes into the bay. So if this isn't your bag - stay away (that way there is more room for the rest of us who do).

Of course I chose the veggie options which included Garlic Mushrooms, Mediterranean vegetables and feta in oil and a good stack of pitta. It was yummy, not exactly mind blowing but really tasty. What does make this place unique is the fantastic view over the bay, so essentially that's what your paying for with your £7 glass of champagne and limited tapas menu. It was worth a visit but it's not the kind of place I'd go regularly.
