She was off delivering food to one of the film crews working on location in Cardiff. This has been a more common occurrence over the last two or three years. The film industry has pushed a little further West and has moved the majority of its productions to Welsh soil, leaving cities like Bristol to their own devices. There have been economic reasons to justify such a wholesale departure. Location shoots in Wales are significantly cheaper, as are all of the allied services that go into putting together TV and film productions. So, with fierce economic pressure, amid the backdrop of global recession, production houses and film companies are doing it on the cheap these days... that is to say, they're saving money on everything but the food! Bant A La Cart has managed to scoop up most of the catering contracts within this new Welsh growth industry. With a reputation for excellence, a broad choice of epicurean delights, and the ability to deliver an unparalleled service, it's small wonder that the Directors opt to sooth the fraying nerves and damaged ego's of their starlets with victual balm from Bant's.

The cakes and pastries in the window serve to draw you in, whether you like it or not, whether you're on a diet or not, and whether you're about to spend the last pennies of your student loan or not. Although more pricey that your usual supermarket selections, Shelley's offers a wonderful array of the strange and luxurious. They have a fresh food counter, where you can buy homemade pasta bakes and salad. As well as some of the most beautiful olives God saw fit to put upon the Earth. Dangerously, I have gone there many times as a lunchtime treat. They have everything you could want and more for picnics and treats. Christmas time brings in some wonderful stock of German biscuits and chocolate. They are also an outlet of Green Bottle products; elderflower cordial and spiced berry cordial and the like. This place is a treasure-trove, always worth a visit.

So it's a dangerous place for me to come as I'm likely to succumb to the charms of one or all. Often I browse around Shelley's which is as perfect as a faberge egg and almost as expensive and then go for a guilt free carb fix in the bakers next door. The good thing about Shelley's is that they do a lot of Welsh produced organic produce. It's a real emporium of loveliness. From independent cheeses, to wine, organic beer, bread, pickles and preserves to smoked meats and fish. They will also make baguettes up for you to take away as well as having a great selection of high quality cakes and desserts in the front window. The only downside is that they don't have a cafe.

They have a massive selection of sandwiches and fillings, including all the standards and some little extras like homemade apple chutney and haloumi cheese. Superb. I can thoroughly recommend the Farmhouse sandwich (honey roasted ham, mature cheddar, salad and chutney), as most of our group all independently ordered the same thing. This led to a funny moment when the first sandwich was delivered and we all threw our hands into the air and laughed. If you searching for a glamorous, expensive, chic cafe where you can buy an expensive, TINY coffee - you are NOT in the right place. Deli Rouge doesn't have a glitzy location or exterior, but inside it achieves a lovely rustic British-come-Mediterranean atmosphere that lets you leave the wet outside world behind. It's good to remember that it's primarily a deli, so the room is quite small. However, the selection of produce and high quality ingredients for sandwiches and salad is immense! They let you compose your own, adding what you want from the counter at a shockingly low price (thick slabs of feta for just 20p more?! Yes please!) Or you can choose from the extensive list of already composed filling combination (e.g Herby Cheese and hummus.) There isn't that much seating, but what is there is great - cushions in bay window, dinky tables outside, bucket chairs around wooden tables. I'd highly recommend taking a book or a friend (or both) for a reasonably priced lunch that is made up of fresh, tasty ingredients. PS - The coffees are HUGE!

It is also good for food that you want to spend a LITTLE longer on, like jacket potatoes. The prices are quite reasonable in some parts and not quite so brilliant in others. My salad was £3.50 but I had to have a salad because the jacket potatoes (not that big and with fillings that didn't look that great) were £4.50. You do have to search for this deli, because it is a little way down Churchill Way, itself off Queen Street. But do go out of your way to try it. And then head to the bar next door.

The variety is the main draw here - and Wow Deli have just added a new collection of sandwiches including a "Crabdaddy Crab" and "Posh Fish Fingers" to accompany the usual offering of jacket potatoes, curries, salads, quiches and homemade soups. The counter was manned by a trio of hipsters who were slicing and chopping (with gloves on - yes, I notice these things and am extremely grateful) when I walked in. Overall, I found the food to be fresh and delicious, but my Yankee heart belongs to New York Deli; I would definitely go back again because I love anywhere where your sandwiches are made to order. Actually, I'm not sure I'd be in a hurry to come back here because it was so hot inside the shop, I felt the need to bail as soon as I walked in. I'm sure that'll change come autumn, but it was uncomfortable and a bit off-putting as it made me question how the food can withstand such conditions.

On the whole I was quite satisfied and impressed. The store is not as big as the original, nor does it have as much stock. This is for the better though, as it is ascetically pleasing, and I have often felt that the other store packs far too much in. A further difference is that this new store focuses far more on the sweeter things in life. There is a mouthwatering selection of handmade chocolates, a wide variety of old fashioned sweets, and some simply breathtaking gingerbread houses, which are already on my Christmas list for next year. They do sell some of the more savory products (though if that's what your after I'd head for their other store), including a rather nice selection of oils, which are far superior to anything you get in a supermarket. Finally the great thing about this store, is that it really makes a nice change from all the big brand names that dominate St David's 2. It's so nice to see an independent retailer doing so well, and I would truly encourage anyone to check out Wallys.
